Red Raiders hit the ground running in state playoffs, win in OT

BETHLEHEM—Through out their tear through the Ches-Mont league schedule this season, Coatesville had established them selves as one of the teams to beat when it came time to “lace em up” in the PIAA class AAAA state tournament.

However, a couple of untimely defensive lapses during the District One playoffs, relegated the Red Raiders to the role of the district’s seven seed when the big dance got underway on Saturday at Freedom High School.

From start to finish, Coatesville (25-6) looked like anything but a seven seed as the Red Raiders screamed out of the gate with an 18-9 first quarter run by knocking downs six of their first seven shots from the floor, before District Eleven champion Pocono Mountain West was able to close out the frame with eight unanswered points, keeping the Panthers in the game.

“They made more plays than we did,” said West head coach Brad Pensyl. “They sure didn’t look like a seven seed to us. They hit some big shots down the stretch, which was huge, we had a chance to close it out but didn’t get it done. “

Even though Coatesville led for most of the tilt again it was a momentary lapse that allowed West to take a two point lead with 15 ticks remaining on the clock, as Ty Dixon hit a mid range jumper posting the Panthers to a 53-51 edge.

Coatesville head coach Smith has his Red Raiders in the PIAA second round

Following a classic coach Smith time out talk, Tymier Miller, who eclipsed the 1000 career point mark this season and has been “Mr. Clutch” all season long, stepped to the free throw line after being fouled on drive with a tenth of a second left and calmly hit both free throws, despite a West timeout in an attempt to “ice” the Coatesville senior, to send the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, while knotted at 56, the Panthers took a 2- point lead following a Dwayne Vines sinking a rebound of a Dixon shot with two minutes remaining, but thanks to outstanding work on the glass by Tyler Burke, a deuce by Emmett Hunt who posted 19 points and steal by Miller, the Red Raiders slammed the door on Pocono Mountains West (22-5).

“Again we showed why they call this a team game,” said Red Raiders head coach Jim Smith. “We showed maturity and poise today and the guys who have done all year stepped up again.”

Coatesville will advance to play Wednesday night against District 12 runner up John Bartrum High School (12-15), who upset Central Dauphin East in a 48-47 nail biter on Saturday, at Norristown High School at 7 pm.
