{"id":10360,"date":"2015-04-22T16:07:39","date_gmt":"2015-04-22T20:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=10360"},"modified":"2015-04-22T15:17:03","modified_gmt":"2015-04-22T19:17:03","slug":"spring-cleaning-can-apply-to-health-as-well","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=10360","title":{"rendered":"Spring cleaning can apply to health as well"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong>Sometimes, a lot of little things cause big issues<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>By Dr. Matthew Lapp<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Columnist, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/CTColLogoMattLapp-250x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1092050\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" src=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/CTColLogoMattLapp-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"CTColLogoMattLapp\" width=\"175\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>Spring has finally sprung and after the winter we had, we deserve it!\u00a0 For many people, the change of season also marks an opportunity for spring cleaning inside and outside the home.\u00a0 If you\u2019re like me, maybe you\u2019ve noticed that the shrubs and grass are almost due for a trim or that the basement or garage have accumulated some extra \u201cstuff\u201d during the winter months.<\/p>\n<p>As I\u2019ve been \u201cgetting my house in order\u201d I had the thought that perhaps our bodies and lives can also have the tendency to accumulate some extra \u201cstuff\u201d in the form of poor health and diet habits, a few extra pounds here and there, and a lack of regular exercise.\u00a0 With that in mind, it might be the perfect time of year to clean up our health as well.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s interesting to me that there are often people who come into my office as a last stop.\u00a0 They\u2019ve tried everything else and now they are willing to do almost anything to improve a relentless symptom.\u00a0 Almost always, the symptom or pain is something that they\u2019ve known about for quite a while and almost as often, they\u2019ve tried a variety of quick fixes.<\/p>\n<p>The way I see it, it\u2019s my job to help the person come up with a long-term answer to the challenge that they\u2019re experiencing, not just to help them eliminate the symptom.\u00a0 That means that we start by discussing any contributing factors like health habits, life stress, and past health challenges that could be complicating or making the situation worse.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is that most symptoms are not caused by just one thing.\u00a0 Often it\u2019s a multitude of life factors that finally give way to that nagging ache or pain.\u00a0 And, once we uncover the culprits, it can be hard work to create a new plan for improvement and continued health and well-being in the future.\u00a0 The good news is that once you get started on a health plan and consistently practice it, it becomes easier and more enjoyable to do it regularly-and the result is a healthier, happier, and more vibrant life.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few simple principles to consider and get you started.<\/p>\n<p>Health comes from the inside out.\u00a0 It\u2019s a journey, not a destination and that means that it\u2019s only through regular diligence and practice that you\u2019ll be able to live a healthy and happy life now and in the future.<\/p>\n<p>No diet can do for you what eating a consistently healthy diet does.\u00a0 There is no such thing as a quick fix.\u00a0 If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.<\/p>\n<p>There is a big difference between simple and easy.\u00a0 Just because something is straightforward, doesn\u2019t mean that consistently applying the principle will be easy.\u00a0 (Case and point-healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, and proper stress management.)<\/p>\n<p>As my office manager and I were discussing various life and health habits recently, she said \u201cI\u2019d rather maintain my car than fix it\u201d and I thought that was a perfect analogy for health.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it simpler to do our best to stay healthy and practice good habits regularly than to try to heal or fix something later on?\u00a0\u00a0 How often do we try to ignore something small until it can no longer be pushed aside?\u00a0 It might not always be the easiest choice, but in the long run, creating sustainable strategies for living a healthy life are the best actions we can take.<\/p>\n<p><i>Drs.
