Nearly 550 celebrate moving to next chapter<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

COATESVILLE \u2014 When students from Kennett or Unionville asked him where he went to school, Branden Bauer said he heard a trace of disdain when they said, \u201cYou go to Coatesville?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m proud to say, \u2018Yes, I do,\u2019\u201d he proclaimed last night to thunderous applause.<\/p>\n

Bauer, a speaker at Coatesville Area Senior High\u2019s 134th commencement, energized an already exuberant crowd with a humorous take on his high school experience. To those who thought the time flew: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem like yesterday,\u201d he insisted, pointing out that 720 days had elapsed.<\/p>\n

In a gymnasium bursting with pride as well as people, Bauer continued a tone set by Superintendent Richard Como.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is only one Coatesville and now it is yours,\u201d Como told the 544 graduates, urging them to leave their egos at the door and go out and make a difference. \u201cOur job is not to hold onto our positions; our job is to improve things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

After inclement weather interrupted last year\u2019s commencement, forcing everyone inside, the threat of rain prompted officials to hold the ceremony to the gym with overflow seating in the auditorium.<\/p>\n

Coatesville\u2019s colors dominated the space with alternating rows of girls in red caps and gowns and boys in black. Around the perimeter of the seats, 11th-grade honor students served as ushers, nattily attired in black and white accented by red flowers. In the stands, relatives and friends juggled balloons, flowers and cameras.<\/p>\n

Bauer ended his speech by quoting from Martin Luther King: \u201cFree at last, free at last. Thank God almighty, we are free at last.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, long after the last diploma was distributed, many graduates and family members lingered for hugs, photos and reminiscing.<\/p>\n

Nancy Cordero, who, along with her husband, Tony, and his mother, Nina Cordero, watched their son Kyle graduate, said she was impressed with the ceremony as well as the school system.<\/p>\n

Her views were shared by Deb Pieri, who risked traffic to run across the street to catch one of the departing teachers. She wanted to thank him for all he had done for her son, Jeb Broughton, and snap one last photo.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was Dave Sheller, who teaches AP Calculus; he\u2019s just fabulous,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Pieri, herself a Coatesville grad, said she used to teach elementary school in the district and was delighted with the positive experiences her son, a scholarship winner, had in both middle and high school.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can remember being disappointed when I went to college because everyone wasn\u2019t as caring as they are here,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really a special place.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
