Organizers for the event set a first-year fundraising goal of $5,000. Thanks\u00a0to students&#8217; hard work and the kindness of the Kennett community, Mini-THON raised $16,644, more than tripling the\u00a0amount of the original goal<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1299798\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/mini-THON-whole-group-300x200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1299798\" class=\"wp-image-1299798 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/mini-THON-whole-group-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"mini THON whole group\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1299798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sitting down for the first time in 8 hours, KHS Mini-THONers raised $16,644; more than three times their original $5,000 goal.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Modeled after Penn State\u2019s Dance Marathon (THON), Kennett High School\u2019s Mini-THON featured eight hours packed with fun activities for participants. Students enjoyed Zumba, yoga, line dancing, basketball, dodgeball, floor hockey, and soccer. They were entertained by Teacher Band, KHS\u2019s faculty band, and two student bands, Californium and Seeking Asylum. Students danced to music selected by student DJs, battled each other in a lip sync contest, and raced scooters across the gym, all while taking regular breaks to feast on a variety of pizzas, sandwiches, quesadillas, pastas, fresh fruit and vegetables, and baked goods generously donated by local merchants.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gemma Erickson, a Kennett junior, raised $1,100 and earned herself the top fundraising prize of a 55-inch flat screen Smart TV.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When asked what motivated her to raise such an impressive total, Gemma said, \u201cI wanted to help kids.\u00a0 Plus, a lot of my family has attended Penn State, and some of my cousins have danced in THON, so it really meant something to me.\u201d\u00a0 And, as for her prize TV? \u201cThe whole family is using it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1299799\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/casey-and-Molly-300x200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1299799\" class=\"wp-image-1299799 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/casey-and-Molly-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"casey and Molly\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1299799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Casey Bruno and Molly Adelman inspiring the participants.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Faculty advisors for the event were Lisa Teixeira, KHS librarian and Humanitarian Club moderator; Erin McDonnell-Jones, English teacher; and Tom Brientnall, social studies teacher.
