{"id":15876,"date":"2016-12-07T15:01:16","date_gmt":"2016-12-07T20:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=15876"},"modified":"2016-12-07T15:01:16","modified_gmt":"2016-12-07T20:01:16","slug":"coatesville-kicks-off-holiday-season-with-tree-lighting-race-and-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=15876","title":{"rendered":"Coatesville kicks off holiday season with tree lighting, race and parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em>Holiday activities brings community together<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><strong>By Lauren Parker- Gill,<\/strong>\u00a0<em>News Editor, The Times<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18385\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18385\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18385\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/5k-350x234.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first Red Run Challenge was held Saturday morning with nearly 200 registrants and was well received by the community.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Coatesville \u2013 The first weekend of December was a busy, festive one for the city with the tree lighting in Gateway Park, the first annual Red Run Challenge and the Christmas Parade along Lincoln Highway.<\/p>\n<p>The tree lighting at Gateway Park kicked off the festivities for the weekend, where the tree was adorned with white lights and children helped decorate with bows and red, black and silver ornaments \u2013 Santa even visited to wish everyone a merry Christmas.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Red Run Challenge 5k and one-mile walk came together less than three months prior, when organizers Amy McFarland and Wendy Kurenda were disappointed to learn the Festive 5k from previous years was no longer being held. Wanting to carry on the tradition, the idea for a new race was born.<\/p>\n<p>McFarland explained that the last-minute nature of their plans did involve some extra work, especially for the police department who needed to change their permit requests for the day to include the race and also rearrange their officers\u2019 schedules for that day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so very grateful for the support of the Coatesville City Police Department, Coatesville City Council, Coatesville Area School District, Massage Envy, Second Wind Timing, students from TCHS, Dick Fitch and the parade committee.\u201d McFarland stated. \u201cThey were all incredibly supportive and helpful \u2013 without them, our event would not have been possible or as successful as it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18386\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18386\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18386\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/5ka-350x234.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Runners followed the race course up and down Lincoln Highway as bystanders cheered them on.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During race day registration, volunteers collected canned goods, which were donated to Jubilee Ministries and also collected donations of new toys for the West Caln Police Department\u2019s 10<sup>th<\/sup> annual Toys for Tots drive.<\/p>\n<p>The race was well attended, with 188 registrants. Sixth-grade student from Scott Middle School, Quinn Hewson ran the 5k in about 36 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great experience and I can\u2019t wait to run the Red Run Challenge again next year.\u201d Hewson said.<br \/>\nOverall race winners:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18387\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18387\" class=\"wp-image-18387 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/parade-350x234.jpeg\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lights and sirens of local fire and police kicked off the Christmas parade that began at Strode Avenue and traveled down Lincoln Highway to 11th Avenue.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Top three females overall:<br \/>\n1. Jackson Davis 16:15.85<\/p>\n<p>Following the inaugural race, the Coatesville Christmas Parade continued as it began at 10 a.m. with the lights and sirens of local fire engines and trucks down Lincoln Highway &#8212; a tradition that now spans decades.<\/p>\n<p>Over 120 entrants participated in the parade that began at Strode Avenue in the West End of the city and continued down the main street of the city, to 11<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue.
