Brandywine looks to trim laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Supervisors seek to remove needless ordinances; discuss chicken ordinance<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Jamie Richard<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Staff Writer, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/WestBrandywine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1866\" title=\"WestBrandywine\" src=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/WestBrandywine-293x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/WestBrandywine-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/WestBrandywine.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a>WEST BRANDYWINE \u2013 The township&#8217;s Board of Supervisors discussed the possibility of repealing some of the township\u2019s ordinances, as well as adding a new \u201cchicken ordinance\u201d at its meeting, Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>According to supervisor Thomas McCaffrey, many of the township\u2019s nuisance ordinances were established due to disputes between one or two residents, rather than it being a community-wide issue.\u00a0 The board members said they hoped to examine some of these ordinances and either repeal or modify them to be less cumbersome for residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think somewhere, somebody has to start reviewing these regulations and start weeding them out,\u201d said McCaffrey.<\/p>\n<p>Although no decisions were made on any ordinances, Supervisors Chairman Josef Obernier Sr. suggested that McCaffrey write an article for the township newsletter asking residents for their input.\u00a0 McCaffrey\u2019s article will appear in the township\u2019s fall newsletter.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The board also discussed the first draft of an ordinance pertaining to the keeping of chicken on residential property.\u00a0 The ordinance allows for up to 24 chickens on a property between four to 10 acres.\u00a0 Any property larger than 10 acres is considered agricultural property and is subject to the township\u2019s agricultural ordinances.<\/p>\n<p>During initial discussions, McCaffrey raised issue with the ordinance, citing it as an example of unnecessary regulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a sign of the times; you need a two-page document for a couple of chickens,\u201d said McCaffrey.<\/p>\n<p>According to township manager Ronald Rambo, the ordinance was proposed as a means for residents to raise chickens for their eggs because current township ordinances do not allow for it.\u00a0 Under the proposed ordinance, residents are not allowed to keep roosters and all chickens must be outfitted with identification tags that list the owner\u2019s name, address and phone number.<\/p>\n<p>McCaffrey was also concerned with the requirement that chicken coops must be placed at least 100 ft. from any residential building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA person should have the right to be a slob in their own home.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to come down and regulate people in their own homes,\u201d said McCaffrey.<\/p>\n<p>Rambo stated that the distance requirement was a matter of health and safety issues, as chickens can attract rodents and other animals that spread disease.\u00a0 He also stated that the township has previously had problems with chickens wandering into neighboring properties and onto roads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChickens are definitely an issue these days,\u201d joked supervisor William Webb.<\/p>\n<p>The board of supervisors will hold their next meeting on Aug. 16.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supervisors seek to remove needless ordinances; discuss chicken ordinance By Jamie Richard, Staff Writer, The Times WEST BRANDYWINE \u2013 The township&#8217;s Board of Supervisors discussed the possibility of repealing some of the township\u2019s ordinances, as well as adding a new \u201cchicken ordinance\u201d at its meeting, Thursday.
