{"id":19411,"date":"2017-10-31T09:57:03","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T13:57:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=19411"},"modified":"2017-10-31T09:57:05","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T13:57:05","slug":"commissioners-add-funds-to-opioid-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=19411","title":{"rendered":"Commissioners add funds to opioid fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5627\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Commissioners-Check-for-COPE-Program-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5627\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5627\" src=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Commissioners-Check-for-COPE-Program-1-350x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Commissioner Terence Farrell, Commissioner Michelle Kichline and Commissioner Kathi Cozzone (far right) present a check for $20,000 to Vince Brown, Director of the Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>WEST CHESTER \u2014 The Chester County Commissioners presented a check for $20,000 to Vince Brown, Director of the County\u2019s Department of Drug and Alcohol Services as further endorsement of the commitment to fight the opioid and heroin crisis in Chester County.<\/p>\n<p>The $20,000, which is part of the Commissioners\u2019 appropriations funds, will support the County\u2019s new Community Outreach and Prevention Education (COPE) initiative, borne out of the Chester County Overdose Prevention Task Force. \u00a0COPE will provide one-to-one support for overdose survivors and their families and friends; provide overdose prevention information and outreach to first responders, hospital staff, family members and friends; and importantly, provide expedited admission into detox and a review of all treatment options for overdose survivors who agree to treatment.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Chester County\u2019s commitment to tackling the opioid and heroin epidemic is evident in the intensive health, education, treatment and law enforcement measures coordinated by the Overdose Prevention Task Force.\u00a0\u00a0 The County\u2019s Color 5K, being held in West Chester on Saturday, November 4<sup>th<\/sup>, is a high profile event that is helping raise awareness, as well as funds, to combat the addiction issue.\u00a0 Funds raised by this event will also support Chester County\u2019s COPE program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe opioid and heroin crisis remains a very big concern that we, as a county have been cooperatively addressing for some time,\u201d said Chester County Commissioners\u2019 Chair Michelle Kichline.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re talking to doctors about prescription practices, we\u2019re undertaking law enforcement measures that make it harder to source the drugs in the county, we\u2019re educating young people to try and prevent greater use in the future, and we\u2019re working with emergency responders and hospitals to provide the right treatment options for overdose survivors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the sad fact is that this awful epidemic is claiming more lives, and we have already surpassed our death toll for last year,\u201d added Commissioner Kichline.\u00a0 \u201cCompared with other areas of the state or nation, Chester County may have fewer people abusing opioids and heroin, but deaths related to overdose are up 38 percent in Chester County for the first half of this year compared to 2016, and as of the end of September, 103 lives were lost to overdose here \u2013 deaths that most likely began with a prescription for opioid pain and ended with buying heroin on the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people taking part in this year\u2019s Color 5K have loved ones who are currently suffering from addiction, and they are running or walking to support them.\u00a0 Others have lost family or friends to addiction, and they are in it to honor their memory.\u00a0 And still others are there because they have gone through the cycle of addiction and treatment and come out the other side as recovering addicts.
