Popa Chubby plays between 180 and 200 shows each year and his shows this weekend will be the last stateside shows prior to a large European tour.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re just getting ready for sound check for our show tonight at The Iridium,\u201d said Popa Chubby, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon. \u201cWe\u2019re doing a tribute show to The Who and Black Sabbath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThen, we have the show at Kennett Flash Friday and a show Saturday in Maryland. After that, we head to Europe. I just did a big tour there in November. I play Europe about three times a year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">After his gig at The Soundry in Columbia, Maryland, Popa Chubby\u2019s next concert will be March 7 at Freddy\u2019s Bar in Frederikshavn, Denmark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re doing a month-long tour of Europe,\u201d said Popa Chubby. \u201cThe final show will be March 31 at Bataclan in Paris \u2013 on my 59th birthday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The veteran rocker just released a new album \u2014 \u201cPrime Cuts \u2013 The Very Best of the Beast from the East.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">With a career spanning nearly 30 years, Popa Chubby has delivered a hand-picked anthology of 15 tracks from his prolific and ever-expanding catalogue. \u201cPrime Cuts\u201d reflects Popa\u2019s choice of the best of his best &#8212; tracks that keep the Chubby legacy fresh and the fans happy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI went all the way back and picked the best stuff from my last 38 records,\u201d said Popa Chubby, during a phone interview Tuesday from his home in New York\u2019s Hudson Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThere were two criteria. First, I had to really like the song. Second, it had to be music the fans request. A lot of it was easy. A a lot came down to the fans \u2013 \u2018Sweet Goddess of Love and Beer,\u2019 \u2018Angel on My Shoulder,\u2019 \u2018Light of Day\u2019 \u2013 give the people what they want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThey were all original album tracks, but some were alternate mixes. I did a lot of re-mastering. There were also two new tracks \u2013 and a Christmas song. It took a couple months to put it all together. It just came out at the end of November.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Popa Chubby\u2019s last two studio albums were \u201cThe Catfish\u201d in 2016 and \u201cTwo Dogs\u201d in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI never stop recording,\u201d said Popa Chubby. \u201cI recorded \u2018Two Dogs\u2019 right after I finished making \u2018The Catfish.\u2019 I\u2019m working on my next album now. This is the time of year when I\u2019m home and can get recording work done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI have a studio in my home. For D.I.Y. stuff, I use ProTools. My studio is filled with vintage stuff \u2013 RCA mics, old compressors and vintage guitars and drums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI have a background in recording. I worked as an engineer and I started out working with tape. It\u2019s all digital now \u2014 but I have an analog way of getting in and an analog way of getting out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen I was working with Tom Dowd, a legendary engineer, he was so happy to go to digital instead of tape. He explained that each time the tape goes over the (recording) head, it loses particles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Finding time to get in the studio is a luxury for Popa Chubby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m never home,\u201d said Popa Chubby. \u201cIt seems that I\u2019m always touring a lot. The progression of my career has been slow and steady. I like to give people real music. The best music for me comes from not making music. There, his musical career hit the ground running with The Atoll, a band he founded in 1989 that toured nationally, gaining a devoted following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Morin then achieved international acclaim with The Pura F\u00e9 Trio, for whom the single \u201cOle Midlife Crisis,\u201d which Morin wrote and performed with Pura F\u00e9, placed at number 17 on France\u2019s iTunes blues chart. With The Atoll and The Pura F\u00e9 Trio, and as a solo artist, Morin has played celebrated venues across the globe, including Paris Jazz Festival, Winter Park Jazz Festival, Folk Alliance International, River People Festival, Shakori Hill Festival, the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and most recently Rochefort En Accords festival in France and The Copenhagen Blues Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The final week of February 2019 has brought Morin to Pennsylvania. After performing at a blues festival in Lancaster last weekend, Morin is set to co-headline a show on February 28 at The Locks at Sona (4417 Main Street, Manayunk, 484- 273-0481, <a href=\"http:\/\/sonapub.com\/\">sonapub.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Morin is touring in support of his new album, \u201cWhen I Rise,\u201d which was released via Maple Street Music. Morin\u2019s sixth release, \u201cWhen I Rise\u201d, follows close on the heels of an international tour that spanned the U.S. and reached as far as Italy, France, and Germany. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">For the Colorado recording sessions, Morin (guitars, pedal steel guitar, vocals) enjoyed a cast of all-star musicians that complemented what he created &#8212; Steve Amed\u00e9e &#8211; drums, percussion; Paul Benjaman &#8211; electric guitar; Jay Forrest &#8211; drums, percussion; Jason Larson &#8211; vocals, piano, bass guitar) Dexter Payne &#8211; clarinet and harmonica; Kim Stone &#8211; acoustic and electric bass); Andy Weyl \u2013 piano; Lionel Young \u2013 violin; and his wife Celeste Di Iorio \u2013 vocals. \u00a0\u201cWhen I Rise\u201d was produced by Stone, Di Iorio and Larson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThis tour is a solo tour,\u201d said Morin, during a phone interview Sunday from a tour stop in Lancaster. \u201cIt\u2019s economically easier to get around with a solo tour. I\u2019m on the road now with my wife and dog in an RV.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Music has always been a major part of Morin\u2019s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThere was music in my family,\u201d said Morin. \u201cEverybody loved to play and sing. I started doing it as a child. I began with piano and got a decent understanding of theory. Piano is a good start. I moved to Colorado after high school initially to play ski areas and that progressed. Now, I\u2019m in my fifties and I\u2019m still doing it \u2013 still playing music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen I was growing up, my folks loved country music. My oldest brother was a rock and folk fan. I grew up in somewhat rural area in Montana, so we didn\u2019t have cable. We didn\u2019t have anything like that. Sometimes in town, when I shopped for records, I\u2019d just look at the album covers. I\u2019d pick something that looked interesting by its cover.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">And, there was always radio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI grew up in Montana in the 1970s,\u201d said Morin. \u201cAs a child, I would listen to whatever was on radio or vinyl that my folks or my brothers had. Somehow the very first song that I played and sang on piano when I was in the first grade was a Chubby Checker song \u2013 \u2018Blueberry Hill\u2019 by Chubby Checker. That was the first song I played on piano and sang. I also listened to Elton John. For whatever reason, I could play by ear pretty well on piano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThen, I started guitar and I could play that really easily. Finger-picking caught my interest. I really liked James Taylor and Neal Young \u2013 and When I was pretty young, I also found a Doug Kershaw album and that made me want to play the fiddle. My folks found me a used one in the newspaper. I really became a fan of Cajun fiddle music. I didn\u2019t know about Louisiana and Cajon \u2013 about rock and jazz from New Orleans. When I discovered it, I pursued that stuff by ear on fiddle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Morin\u2019s music world opened up even more when he got to Colorado.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was exposed to a lot of different styles of music in Colorado,\u201d said Morin. \u201cI got into world music and jazz. I bought every George Benson album I could find. I got into reggae too. The first reggae album I got was \u2018Babylon By Bus\u2019 by Bob Marley and the Wailers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAnother artist who I loved was Ali Farka Toure whose melodic guitar playing still influences my music. I really love that melodic-based finger-style African guitar. When I was in Colorado, I played in dance bands in ski areas. If a song didn\u2019t work on the dance floor, I\u2019d abandon it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Morin\u2019s stage credits also include \u201cTribe\u201d at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, and co-authorship of \u201cTurtle Island,\u201d a 50-member production that played two consecutive years to sold-out audiences in Northern Colorado. With the Red Willow Dancers, he was a guest of the internationally renowned Kodo Drummers, performing at their 1998 Spring Festival and additional dates in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Morin has produced or performed on over 18 recordings, and has toured across the US, as well as Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Denmark and the UK. Morin\u2019s performances have reached millions on national TV in Japan, France, and the UK, as well as on national radio in the US (NPR\u2019s Beale Street Caravan), UK (BBC\u2019s Whose London), France (RFI), Switzerland, and Belgium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI wrote a stage play called \u2018Turtle Island\u2019 in 2000,\u201d said Morin. \u201cIt was a play that involved music heavily. From that point on, I got more serious about songwriting. I do my writing on acoustic guitar. His grandfather Janos Starker, a Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor, is a Grammy award-winning cellist. Saxe learned cello at a young age from his grandfather\u2019s master classes taught at the Jacob School of Music at Indiana University. At just 14 years old, Saxe realized his calling was to be a performer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy grandfather was a huge influence \u2013 musically and philosophically,\u201d said Saxe, during a phone interview last week from his home in North Hollywood. \u201cOther musical influences were Keith Jarrett and Oscar Peterson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/saxe-mn0003677985\">Saxe<\/a> initially studied the cello as a teenager. Later, after discovering jazz and R&amp;B, he switched to the piano and guitar. More importantly, he began writing his own songs and soon was performing weekly in Toronto and posting his songs online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was 19 when I moved to L.A.,\u201d said Saxe. \u201cI had been living in King City, which is about an hour outside Toronto. By moving west, I saw the opportunity for me to make music with more support in L.A.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt was four years until I made my first single. I was working as an artist for a year-and-a-half. In an effort to stay in music, I started working as a songwriter. In 2017, I knew that what makes me happiest is making music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In 2017 Saxe released his debut single, \u201cChanged,\u201d followed by \u201cAnybody Else\u201d the same year. He released the single \u201cThe Few Things\u201d in 2018. \u00a0His latest single is \u201cBoth Can Be True: Part 1.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve released five singles so far,\u201d said Saxe. \u201cI like my songs too much not to give them to people one at a time. An LP could go all the way. I\u2019m writing all the time. I\u2019m lyric-obsessed. It\u2019s an internal drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAt this point, I have a lot of songs written and recorded that I really love. I could put an album out now, but I want to be able to give these songs their best shot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cFor right now, I\u2019m just touring \u2013 just me and my guitar and keyboards. I just got off a 20-day run with Harry Hudson and next is this tour. Then, I\u2019ll be in Toronto for a while and, after that, back to the states. He turned 33 last September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m one of the veteran people in the industry,\u201d said Long, during a recent phone interview from his home in Jersey City, New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m proud of myself because I lasted so long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Long, who headlines a show at the World Caf\u00e9 Live (3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, 215-222-1400, <\/span><span lang=\"EN\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcafelive.com\/\">www.worldcafelive.com<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN\">) on March 2,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0is a talented singer-songwriter-guitarist from England who gained international recognition based on a song he wrote called \u201cLet Me Sign.\u201d The song was sung by his friend Robert Pattinson, who stars in the hit movie \u201cTwilight\u201d and was included on the film soundtrack \u2013 an album that debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200 and has remained on the chart for over six months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cRobert and I met when we were both playing gigs around London,\u201d said Long, during a phone interview Monday morning. \u201cWe got to be friends. We never played together on stage, but we would listen to each other\u2019s sets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI had never recorded the song or even played it live. I played it for him, and he liked it. He took it and played it over some other people, and they liked it too. Then, I got phone call from L.A. saying they wanted to use my song in the movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Long just finished making his 10th record. His new album \u201cSultans,\u201d will be released via Compass Records on March 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMaking the \u2018Sultans\u2019 album took a long time because we dragged it out,\u201d said Long. \u201cI wanted to give it some breathing room. Half of it was done in 2017 and the other half in 2018. There were only 10 real days on intensive work in the studio. We\u2019d get together and rehearse and ten go into the studio. We recorded it in Brooklyn at Dave Lindsay\u2019s Country Club Studio. It was a nice little studio that had all we needed. We also did some overdubs in Nashville. It was mostly digital for easiness&#8211; but there was some analog.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cSultans\u201d was produced by multi-instrumentalist Jack Dawson with whom Long had collaborated and toured with on his 2012 EP, \u201cThe Backing Singer.\u201d \u201cSultans\u201d was recorded over a one-year period in a studio in Brooklyn. With Long on guitar, Dawson also played bass on the tracks while studio engineer Dave Lindsay played drums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">According to Long, \u201cJack and I have a shared love of so much music, and we would talk endlessly about records we love. Jack, like myself, is a feel guy so we were never too picky about tone or instruments. The album is basically a reflection of our friendship and love of songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cJack really added his own colors and personality to the album, and it\u2019s definitely the best thing I\u2019ve ever done. Of course, I always feel that the new one is the best one, but I feel pretty strongly about this one. I really love creating and writing. It feels as magical today as it did when I was a child.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The recording sessions went very smoothly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe formed this weird bond,\u201d said Long. \u201cI\u2019d bring a song in and we\u2019d rehearse and record at the same time. Usually, when you\u2019re in the studio and are paying for time, you don\u2019t have the luxury of taking your time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe songs were written ahead of time. On half the songs, I wrote all the parts and did everything. It was surprising. The group actually played what was on the demo. It matched what was in my head. It felt like I was playing through them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe thing that held them together was that I wrote all the songs at the same time. \u00a0There were hard times. I had lost a few people. But there were also good times. Songs represent an idea and they\u2019re all part of the same family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAlso, my impending fatherhood influenced the songwriting. I felt like he was always on my mind when I was writing.
