{"id":23844,"date":"2019-03-19T09:13:38","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T13:13:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=23844"},"modified":"2019-03-19T09:14:28","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T13:14:28","slug":"county-granted-374-million-for-farm-preservation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=23844","title":{"rendered":"County granted $3.74 million for farm preservation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Farm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9225\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Farm-350x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a>At its recent meeting, the Pennsylvania Agricultural Land Preservation Board awarded Chester County the highest level of funding, $3.74 million, to preserve nearly 150 more acres of farmland on two Chester County farms.\u00a0 The state board announced an overall spending threshold of $38 million for the purchase of development rights from 38 farm owners state-wide \u2013 the highest spending total in over a decade.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Chester County\u2019s award of state funds, added to certified county funds of $5 million for farmland preservation in 2019, positions Chester County as the state leader in funding for agricultural land preservation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreservation of farms is truly best practice for the future benefit of everyone and we must do what we can to make sure Chester County\u2019s tradition of farming continues,\u201d said Chester County Commissioners\u2019 Chair Michelle Kichline.<\/p>\n<p>Since the start of Chester County\u2019s agricultural land preservation program 30 years ago, more than 40,100 acres of farmland have been preserved.\u00a0 Factoring in current agreements of sale, the number exceeds 41,200 acres.\u00a0 Last December, Chester County preserved its 500th farm.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Kathi Cozzone noted:\u00a0 \u201cThe variety of preserved farms in Chester County reflects the diversity of our agriculture.\u00a0 It is a vital industry, creating more than $600 million in revenue a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Terence Farrell added:\u00a0 \u201cChester County has invested $106 million in farmland preservation over 30 years, and that investment ensures that the county\u2019s agriculture industry continues to contribute over $3 billion to our local economy through sales, employment, taxes and services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thank the members of our Agriculture Land Preservation Board for their valuable contribution, making our program the best in the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nine-member Chester County Agriculture Land Preservation Board (ALPB) guides the County on farmland preservation and reviews applications from farm owners.\u00a0 Board chairwoman Melba Matthews said, \u201cWe are so proud of the accomplishments of our volunteer board that has worked in partnership with county staff and the Chester County Commissioners for the past 30 years to preserve farmland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a great accomplishment to be state leader for farmland preservation, while leveraging federal, state, county, and township funds to support the local farming industry and preserve open space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ALPB is now accepting applications for farmland preservation. \u00a0Farms 10 acres or more are eligible if they are adjacent to permanently preserved land. Farms not adjacent to permanently preserved land need to be a minimum of 50 acres in size for the Commonwealth program and 25 acres in size for the Challenge Grant Program.
