Ginger a spice that is strong \u2013 not in a tongue-burning way but rather in an attention-getting powerful way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In the world of metal music, Jinjer is one of the heaviest hitters. Jinjer is a metal band from the Ukraine \u2013 a foursome from Donetsk that is brutal even in its softest moments.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Jinjer, which features Tatiana Shmailyuk, Roman Ibramkhalilov, Eugene Abdiukhanov, and Vladislav Ulasevich, is touring the states in support of its new album, \u201cMacro.\u201d On October 1, Jinjer will bring the tour to the area for a show at the Voltage Lounge (421 North Seventh Street, Philadelphia, 215- 964-9602, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voltagelounge.com\/\">www.voltagelounge.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re mostly from the Donetsk area,\u201d said bassist Eugene Abdiukhanov, during a phone interview last week from a tour stop in Atlanta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m from Makiivka, which is near Donetsk. The others are from Gorlovka and Zabarovia \u2013 all in eastern Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The line-up has been together in this form since 2011 except for drummer Vladislav Ulasevich, who joined the band in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMacro\u201d is a companion piece to the band\u2019s most recent previous release, \u201cMicro,\u201d which came out last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018Macro\u2019 in Kiev with our producer Max Martin,\u201d said Abdiukhanov.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe made the album with Max in his studio. The recording period was the first two weeks of June 2019. We didn\u2019t really have time to write for a while. We recorded \u2018Micro\u2019 last September and the immediately toured the states. We write between tours. We started writing songs mid-February and finished in the spring \u2018Macro\u2019 and \u2018Micro\u2019 are definitely connected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201c\u2018Macro\u2019 is sort of successor to \u2018Micro.\u2019 In some ways, they are a double record &#8211; similar but, at the same time, different. We wrote the songs in a calendar year, so there is a thread which keeps going from \u2018Micro\u2019 to \u2018Macro.\u2019 \u00a0They are musically and stylistically connected. They lie in the dame direction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Jinjer plays metal music the way metal music should be. It is intense and in-your-face. It assaults listeners\u2019 ears and rattles their rib cages. It also has softer, melodic parts \u2013 if even for only brief period of time. But the band might not be quite as stylized as it has been in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe sound completely different now on \u2018Macro,\u2019\u201d said Abdiukhanov, who is also a jiu-jitsu practitioner. \u201cWe\u2019re not using any samplers. All instruments are natural and organic \u2013 not highly compressed like other bands. We wanted to sound real \u2013 and I think we succeeded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWith our sound, we just keep going along our way. We are not pure metal. We add a mix of genres and styles. I\u2019m not wasting my time with labels. His show on October 2 will be his first concert at City Winery (990 Filbert Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/citywinery.com\/philadelphia\/\">citywinery.com\/philadelphia\/<\/a>) \u2013 a new venue that hosted its first show last Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Laswell is on the road touring in support of his new recording, \u201cCovers II,\u201d which was just released on September 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The new album was released 10 years after his \u201c<a title=\"Protected by Outlook: https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/5VmVA3eZ4ZwYJYDyn3Bt6V. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fopen.spotify.com%2Falbum%2F5VmVA3eZ4ZwYJYDyn3Bt6V&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C6961f14923bc45aa36c408d7318475df%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637032317294791940&amp;sdata=nbioieWo3f1WLv5NOgY3NtSuA%2BaafMbb5aFx5%2FL1QfY%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covers<\/a>\u201d album where he reinterpreted songs from acts such as Kate Bush, Echo &amp; The Bunnymen, Mazzy Star and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On \u201cCovers II,\u201d Laswell is treating fans to his versions of songs from The Verve, PJ Harvey, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel, Placebo, The Psychedelic Furs, Catherine Wheel and R\u00f6yksopp. Laswell completely performed, produced and recorded the album by himself &#8212; with the exception of vocal contributions from Jenson on four of the songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI finished up the \u2018Covers II\u2019 EP and it came out last Friday,\u201d said Laswell, during a phone interview last week from a tour stop in Portland, Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhile I was working on that, I started working on my next record, which will probably come out in 2020. I\u2019m constantly writing. Then, I go through what I\u2019ve written and saved to my phone. My iPhone memory is pretty full.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cSometimes, the music will exist for a while with no lyrics or melodies. My lyrics are very observational \u2013 and very introspective. I\u2019ll build up a song sonically and texturally and then add vocals. I like singing and recording at the same time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Laswell has also built a reputation as a top-flight producer and that makes it easy for him to record on his own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI engineer and mix on my own,\u201d said Laswell, referring to his recordings. \u201cDoing it over and over naturally makes it better. I\u2019m not as much a perfectionist as I was. It\u2019s more enjoyable for me these days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In addition to the two discs of cover, Laswell has released eight albums of original material since 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">He also has gained a lot of recognition for the use of his material in films and television shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Laswell has had multiple placements in hit TV series such as \u201cGray\u2019s Anatomy,\u201d \u201cOne Tree Hill,\u201d \u201cGlee,\u201d \u201cNCIS,\u201d \u201cThe Vampire Diaries,\u201d CSI: Miami,\u201d and \u201cThe Blacklist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cTelevision and movies have been a major force behind my career,\u201d said Laswell, who now lives close to Hollywood in Newport Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMost of the money comes from placements \u2013 and it keeps going. For example, there is a whole new generation of people watching \u2018Gray\u2019s Anatomy\u2019 on Netflix and they\u2019re getting exposed to my songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Wednesday night\u2019s show will be a double treat for Laswell\u2019s fans. They will get to hear their favorite songs performed live with a band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt will be a bass player, a drummer an electric guitarist and I\u2019m on piano,\u201d said Laswell. \u201cIt\u2019s my first time with these guys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cUsually, I tour solo or stripped-down. This is the first time with a band in eight years, My last two records were so large, I knew it would better live if I had a band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve got a good group of guys and we\u2019ve rehearsed more songs than we play. There is still a set \u2018set list\u2019 but we\u2019re able to deviate. In the studio, it is a project with one man writing something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">That man is Ian Jacobs, a Boston native who has been living in Brooklyn for the last 15 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Monograms\u00a0is the alias of frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ian Jacobs.\u00a0Over the past few years, the project quickly expanded from a Brooklyn bedroom recording experiment to a full band endeavor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">After he graduated from a community college in New England, Jacobs spent time backpacking around Europe. Upon returning to the states, he moved to the Bushwick section of Brooklyn in 2005 when he was 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI didn\u2019t get into making music until I moved to New York,\u201d said Jacobs, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Brooklyn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI never had lessons as a kid, but I loved listening to music. I didn\u2019t get interested in playing in a band until I was in my late 20s. I bought a synthesizer and some turntables and stared making electronic music. Eventually, I got a guitar<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was always into listening to the crossover with electronic music and rock music \u2013 bands like Stereolab, Beck, TV on the Radio and Interpol. I was absorbing everything that I thought was cool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Jacobs played in several bands and also built up ideas for his own music.<br \/>\n\u201cI started Monograms in my bedroom as a recording project because I didn\u2019t want to play in bands anymore,\u201d said Jacobs, who grew up in the \u201cwitchy\u201d town \u2013 Salem, Massachusetts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI did three EPs as solo projects. During that period of a couple years, the band lineup was rotating and changing all the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On September 20, Jacobs released \u201cLiving Wire,\u201d the debut Monograms album, via PaperCup Music.\u00a0The current lineup for Monograms includes Rich Carrillo (drums), Michelle Feliciano (synth) and Sam Bartos (bass).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI can\u2019t give enough credit to my bandmates,\u201d said Jacobs. \u201cBut all the songs are still just me in the studio. The writing is still pretty much a solo project. Rich played drums on half the record. Other than that, it was just me in the studio with my friend Ben Rice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cBen produced the album at his studio \u2013 Degraw Sound in Brooklyn. I\u2019d workshop stuff at Hemlock House, which is my home studio, and bring it to him. His fingerprints are all over the whole record. He produced it and mixed it. It took three months to make the album.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">When it\u2019s time to bring the music to life on stage, the trio of Carrillo, Feliciano and Bartos join forces very effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThis lineup has been in place since late last year,\u201d said Jacobs. \u201cWe\u2019ve played a bunch of shows, but they\u2019ve been mostly in the New York area.
