{"id":31950,"date":"2022-06-18T10:25:13","date_gmt":"2022-06-18T14:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=31950"},"modified":"2022-06-18T10:25:15","modified_gmt":"2022-06-18T14:25:15","slug":"chester-countys-cairns-named-mid-atlantic-master-farmer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=31950","title":{"rendered":"Chester County&#8217;s Cairns named Mid-Atlantic Master Farmer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16354\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16354\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16354\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Donald-Cairns.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Donald Cairns<\/p><\/div>\n<p>NEWMANSTOWN, Pa. \u2014 Though the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Master Farmers are an all-Pennsylvania group, their diversity is a great representation of agriculture in the Keystone State:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Donald Cairns of <u>Parkesburg, Chester County<\/u>, who grows 1,600 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat.<\/li>\n<li>Jeff and Sue Frey of <u>Willow Street, Lancaster County<\/u>, who grow 900 acres of field crops, several greenhouses of cut flowers and raise contract finishing hogs for Country View Family Farms.<\/li>\n<li>Arthur King of <u>Valencia, Butler County<\/u>, who raises 137 acres of fruits and vegetables, and runs a farm market just outside Pittsburgh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winners were nominated by individuals and ag organizations. Their applications were viewed and scored by a three-judge panel in February and March, and final selections were made in late March.<\/p>\n<p>They will be honored in person at this year\u2019s Mid-Atlantic Master Farmer Banquet on July 15 at Hotel Rock Lititz in Lititz, Pa. The banquet starts at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Mid-Atlantic Master Farmers Award is America\u2019s longest running and most prestigious agricultural honors program. It sprouted in 1927 as part of a Master Farmers of America program to foster stewardship and leadership. At that point, the program was initiated by Pennsylvania Farmer magazine and the USDA.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the award is co-sponsored by American Agriculturist magazine and by Cooperative Extension programs in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia.
