{"id":34004,"date":"2023-08-10T07:42:47","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T11:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=34004"},"modified":"2023-08-10T07:42:48","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T11:42:48","slug":"on-stage-hot-horns-comedy-at-xcite-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=34004","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Hot horns, comedy at Xcite Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18396\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18396\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18396\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/358398914_824433269044612_6912372976137674876_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Summer Horns 2023<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you visit Parx Casino (2999 Street Road, Bensalem, <a href=\"https:\/\/parxcasino.com\/\">https:\/\/parxcasino.com<\/a>) this weekend, there is a sure way to be a winner.<\/p>\n<p>All you need do is head to The Xcite Center at Parx Casino to attend a show on Friday or Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>On August 11, the venue will host \u201cDave Koz &amp; Friends Summer Horns 2023.\u201d On August 12, it will be an evening of stand-up comedy delivered by Marlon Wayans.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Koz\u00a0&amp; Friends\u2019\u00a0Summer Horns 2023\u00a0tour launched on June 30 at\u00a0The Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, Florida.\u00a0The GRAMMY\u00ae-nominated, chart-topping saxophonist is teaming up with two other sax greats \u2013\u00a0Candy Dulfer\u00a0and\u00a0Eric Darius\u00a0\u2013 for the run.\u00a0Acclaimed vocalist\u00a0Maysa\u00a0will join the powerhouse lineup for 10 shows, including the concert in Bensalem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the sixth time I\u2019ve done a Summer Horns Tour,\u201d said Koz, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from New York.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just got back to New York today after spending the last couple weeks in Germany. I did a two-week river cruise with Rick Braun on his tour down the Rhine River. It was the first time I\u2019d ever been on a river cruise. It was a great trip.<\/p>\n<p>Koz has done a \u201cSummer Horns Tour\u201d in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p>His tours come in many different formats and are presented at a wide variety of venues.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the 2013 \u201cSummer Horns Tour,\u201d Koz visited the Philly area with an assortment of different shows and an array of guest performers such as Bebe Winans, Sheila E and Jonathan Butler.<\/p>\n<p>On August 22, 2013, the veteran smooth jazz saxophonist brought his \u201cDave Koz and Friends Summer Horns Tour 2013\u201d to Philadelphia for a show at the Dell Music Center in Fairmount Park. The concert featured an all-star lineup of saxophonists &#8212; Mindi Abair, Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot and, of course, Koz himself. The foursome released an album titled \u201cSummer Horns\u201d in June 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came up with the concept the previous summer,\u201d said Koz. \u201cPaul Brown, the producer, quarterbacked the project. We recorded a bunch of songs over a six-week period in January and finally whittled it down to 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s the greatest album I ever made. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with all these great jazz musicians was great. It was healthy competition &#8212; and some of the best playing I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time, there are three all-star jazz sax players onstage together \u2013 Koz, Dulfer and Darius.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandy is a great sax player \u2013 and a great vocalist,\u201d said Koz. \u201cShe\u2019s really popular in Europe and also in Asia. So, she doesn\u2019t tour in the states that much. Eric \u2013 I watched him grow up and he\u2019s 40 now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dulfer\u00a0rose to fame with high-profile collaborations with Dave Stewart (the worldwide No. 1 smash \u201cLily Was Here\u201d) and the legendary Prince, whose tongue-in-cheek recommendation (\u201cWhen I want sax, I call Candy\u201d) in the \u201cPartyman\u201d video made the world sit up and notice the talented sax player at his side.<\/p>\n<p>Their collaboration continued over the years with many studio sessions, TV show appearances, award show performances (including the GRAMMY Awards\u00ae) and global concert tours. Candy joined Prince\u2019s NPG band as a permanent member for his record-shattering\u00a0Musicology\u00a0tour and album.<\/p>\n<p>Her first solo album, \u201cSaxuality,\u201d\u00a0earned her a GRAMMY Award nomination. The combined world-wide sales of her solo albums top 2.5 million copies, and she has had several No. 1 hits in the U.S. Duler\u2019s new album,\u00a0\u201cWe Never Stop,\u201d includes the hit, \u201cJammin\u2019 Tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dulfer has been fortunate to work \u2013 both in the studio and on stage \u2013 with some of the biggest names in music, including Van Morrison,\u00a0Maceo Parker, Sheila E., Mavis Staples, Lionel Richie, Beyonc\u00e9, Pink Floyd, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Darius, internationally known as an elite Jazz\/R&amp;B\/Pop saxophonist, songwriter, producer and performer, recently dropped \u201cL.O.V.E.\u201d Feat. Brian Culbertson, the third single from his seventh studio album, \u201cBreakin\u2019 Thru,\u201d which debuted at #2 on the iTunes Top 40 Jazz Albums Chart.<\/p>\n<p>This project is an extra special milestone for Darius as it is his first release via his own independent label, SagiDarius Music. The title track and debut single for \u201cBreakin\u2019 Thru\u201d has been a staple on Contemporary Jazz radio, reaching #1 on the Mediabase Smooth Jazz chart, as well as his second single,\u201dDare 2 Dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreakin\u2019 Thru\u201d features 10 original songs with co-production by Darius, Rodney Jones, Jr.\u00a0(Chris Brown, Mary Mary, Mary J. Blige) and\u00a0Butta N\u2019\u00a0Bizkit\u00a0(John Legend, Ne-Yo, Miguel, Ledisi).<\/p>\n<p>Maysa\u00a0is blessed with an instantly identifiable honey-toned mezzo-soprano and an undeniably brilliant and magnetic stage presence. Having collaborated with everyone from\u00a0Stevie Wonder\u00a0to Incognito,\u00a0Angela Bofill, Will Downing, Jonathan Butler, Phil Perry and more, Maysa can hang with the best.<\/p>\n<p>She has been the recipient of many awards for her work, including Soul Train\u2019s first Centric Award in 2009, and her first GRAMMY nomination for Best Traditional R&amp;B Performance for her remake of Nancy Wilson\u2019s\u00a0\u201cQuiet Fire\u201d in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The Baltimore native is the owner\/founder of her own record label, Blue Velvet Soul Records. To celebrate her first record printing, Maysa designed a commemorative blue velvet box set with four singles \u2013 \u201cYou Are Not Alone,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s Gonna Be Alright,\u201d \u201cLovin\u2019 You Is Easy\u201d and \u201cSoft Words\u201d \u2013 as an EP called\u00a0\u201cThe Fab First Four\u201d\u00a0in January of 2021.\u00a0Maysa recently released her 14th\u00a0solo studio album, \u201cMusic For Your Soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, there will be a lot of talent onstage at The Excite Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fun show full of saxophones,\u201d said Koz. \u201cI grew up loving sax. I even played in the sax section of a big band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Koz attended\u00a0William Howard Taft High School\u00a0in\u00a0Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, performing on saxophone as a member of the school jazz band. He later graduated from\u00a0UCLA\u00a0with a degree in\u00a0mass communications\u00a0in 1986, and only weeks after his graduation, decided to make a go of becoming a professional musician.<\/p>\n<p>Within weeks of that decision, he was recruited as a touring member of singer Bobby Caldwell\u2019s (\u201cWhat You Won\u2019t Do For Love\u201d) band. It was during this time that Koz befriended keyboardist Jeff Lorber, who invited Koz to play on one of his tours. That stint was followed by a 14-month tour with pop singer Richard Marx.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Koz released two chart-topping collections of standards. \u201cAt the Movies,\u201d his lush, romantic celebration of timeless melodies from cinema, spent 12 weeks atop Billboard&#8217;s Top Contemporary Jazz chart. Produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, it was nominated for a GRAMMY\u00ae\u00a0in the Best Pop Instrumental Album category. \u201cMemories of a Winter&#8217;s Night,\u201d a festive collection of holiday standards, hit No. 1 on Billboard&#8217;s Top Contemporary Jazz chart in December 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Koz has collaborated with many artists over the years, including Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Barry Manilow, Valerie Simpson, Gloria Estefan, Luther Vandross, Shelby Lynne, Kenny Loggins, U2, Michael McDonald, Rod Stewart and The Foo Fighters.<\/p>\n<p>He also hosts two radio programs: The Dave Koz Radio Show and The Dave Koz Lounge, which appears on SiriusXM Watercolors and airs nationally every Sunday. Koz completed a four-year term on the GRAMMY\u00ae\u00a0Foundation Artists Committee and has served as National Trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts &amp; Sciences (NARAS).<\/p>\n<p>Koz has released more than 20 albums since his eponymous debut album in 1990. His most recent albums \u2013 both of which came out in 2021 &#8212; were \u201cA Romantic Night In (The Love Songs Album)\u201d and \u201cThe Golden Hour,\u201d which was recorded with Cory Wong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy most recent project is a Disney EP, and the first single will be out in the fall,\u201d said Koz. \u201cI always loved Disney music. The first three songs in this project are from different eras. The first single \u2013 \u2018When You Wish Upon a Star\u2019 \u2013 is from the original era. The second \u2013 \u2018Reflection\u201d from \u2018Mulan\u2019 &#8212; is from the 90s. The third is from the 2020s \u2013 \u2018Encanto.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project really started with my love of Disney and animation. I\u2019ve been working with a Finnish animator JonesAndYou, who is from Helsinki. I wanted to parlay music and my love of Disney. It\u2019s a big ballad that was a Top 10 radio hit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure about making a new album. I don\u2019t want to regurgitate music just to release an album. Playlists have changed so much. His films have grossed more than $736 million in domestic box office and $1 billion in global box office. As a standup comedian, he is selling out nationwide and adding shows every weekend; his newest stand-up special, \u201cGod Loves Me,\u201d premiered on HBO Max in March 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Wayans can most recently be seen on the big screen in Ben Affleck&#8217;s Nike drama, \u201cAir,\u201d for Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports and Mandalay Pictures. His film, \u201cThe Curse of Bridge Hollow,\u201d which he produced and starred in, debuted at #1 on Netflix this past fall.<br \/>\nWayans is commonly recognized for his role as &#8216;Marcus Copeland&#8217; in Columbia Pictures&#8217; 2004 hit comedy, \u201cWhite Chicks,\u201d opposite Shawn Wayans, Jamie King and Terry Crews. He also starred alongside Shawn Wayans and Regina Hall in Dimension Films&#8217; horror comedy spoof films, \u201cScary Movie\u201d and \u201cScary Movie 2.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Wayans starred with his brother Shawn Wayans on The WB&#8217;s \u201cThe Wayans Bros.,\u201d which was the highest rated comedy on the network and continues to air in syndication. He has appeared on several popular television programs, including Fox&#8217;s &#8220;In Living Color,&#8221; Adult Swim&#8217;s &#8220;Childrens Hospital,&#8221; and BET&#8217;s &#8220;Second Generation Wayans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Wayans isn\u2019t able to discuss his past, present or future TV and film projects. But he can talk about doing standup \u2013 and he loves doing standup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe layoff is a blessing for me \u2013 an opportunity to get better at something,\u201d said Wayans, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from a vacation break in North Carolina. \u201cI can continue to grow as an act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t really have a break during COVID. I was still doing outside shows. I just continue to do what I do \u2013 making people laugh and forget their troubles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wayans has comedic talents in his DNA.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Wayans family is an American show business family. Family members include\u00a0Keenen Ivory Wayans,\u00a0Shawn Wayans,\u00a0Marlon Wayans,\u00a0Damon Wayans Sr.,\u00a0Kim Wayans,\u00a0Damon Wayans Jr.,\u00a0Damien Dante Wayans, and\u00a0Chaunt\u00e9 Wayans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily gatherings are fun,\u201d said Wayans. \u201cLife is funny. It all goes in shifts. Sometimes, I\u2019m closer to one family member. Sometimes, I\u2019m closer to another one. I can\u2019t say that I have a favorite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just like to be funny. We all like to be funny. My first solo standup show? It was probably about eight years ago when I went out on my own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, it was difficult \u2013 trying to find your voice \u2013 finding which wells to pull from. It\u2019s like layers of an onion. You start with politics and then peel off another layer. Eventually, it\u2019s about you. It\u2019s always about fun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sit in the pocket better. I\u2019m a better storyteller. I like being a quarterback that sits in the pocket and scrambles if I have to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, I\u2019m working toward a special. Every night, I try something new. I never stick to the script. I\u2019m not doing pop culture. I speak about me. His work fills your heart and opens your eyes as he continues to walk the walk of a true advocate for equality, justice, and peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Long-time friend and Flynn champion, Kris Kristofferson has called John &#8220;an important artist whose work in prisons, rehabs, and half-way houses is distilled into the truth and the beauty of heartfelt and heartwarming slices of life&#8221;. On Thursday, August 10th I&#8217;ll be in Orlando, FL for the opening of the 21st biennial national convention of Vietnam Veterans of America. The following evening I&#8217;ll be doing a show closer to home at my new favorite venue, Jamey&#8217;s House of Music in Lansdowne, PA.<\/p>\n<p>Other upcoming gigs include my annual concert for the kids at Camp Dreamcatcher, a therapeutic summer camp for kids dealing with AIDS\/HIV (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.campdreamcatcher.org\/\">http:\/\/Campdreamcatcher.org<\/a>), and a performance at the annual gala for the Delaware Innocence Mission (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innocencede.org\/\">https:\/\/www.innocencede.org\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The show on August 11 will start at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.<\/p>\n<p>August 12 will be an \u201cOpen Mic Night\u201d featuring free admission. Showtime is 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Jamey\u2019s features a popular \u201cJazz at Jamey\u2019s\u201d on Thursday featuring many of the best singers in the region performing a set from 7-8 p.m. with the backing of the Dave Reiter Trio and occasional guest musicians.<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s guest singer is Carolina Santos.<\/p>\n<p>Santos is an Argentine\/Brazilian Jazz and World Music Singer who started her career in music at an early age, thanks to her musician parents.<\/p>\n<p>She graduated with a BA in Vocal Jazz from Music College TAMABA, in Buenos Aires Argentina. Awarded with a merit scholarship, she represented the institute at CLAEM (Conference of Latin America\u00b4s Music Schools), where she won another scholarship to study at UNPHU, Dominican Republic for her last semester.<\/p>\n<p>Santos has been traveling to New York for the last six years, taking private lessons and workshops in Voice, Improvisation, Composition and Arrangement with top singers and instrumentalists of the NY Jazz Scene.<\/p>\n<p>She leads her soloist Project where she incorporates Brazilian and South American Rhythms to her Jazz Repertoire, with arrangements of her own that unifies everything with a modern sound. For the last two years she has been touring countries like Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n<p>The Dave Reiter Trio lays down the backing for some out of this world jazz to happen, and you never know who might show up to join in. Reiter is a long-time jazz pro and is equally at home on the seven-string guitar, Nord keyboard or the venue\u2019s top of the line Hammond organ setup. Bill Marconi is on drums; his name is known to jazz aficionados around the world. Holding down the bottom is first-call Philly bassist, George Livanos.<\/p>\n<p>Doors open at 6 p.m. on August 10. Santos will perform from 7-8 p.m. followed by an \u201cOpen Mic Jazz Jam\u201d from 8-10 p.m. There is a $10 cover charge.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cSunday Blues Brunch &amp; Jam\u201d is scheduled for every Sunday from noon-3 p.m. with the host band\u2019s set from noon-1 p.m. followed by an open mic from 1-3 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The first, third, fourth and fifth Sunday sessions are hosted by the Philly Blues Kings while the hosts for second Sunday sessions are the Girke-Davis Project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d features many great songs and this month you can hear them performed in a live setting.<\/p>\n<p>On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays now through August 27, the Candlelight Dinner Theater (2208 Millers Road, Arden, Delaware,\u00a0302- 475-2313,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org\/\">www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org<\/a>) will be presenting its latest offering of the 2022-2023 season \u00a0\u2013 \u201cThe Sound of Music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to sheer volume of songs that have lodged in everyone\u2019s subconscious, no show can come close to \u201cThe Sound of Music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Is there anyone out there who doesn\u2019t recognize at least one of these songs &#8212; \u201cThe Sound of Music,\u201d \u201cMaria,\u201d \u201cMy Favorite Things,\u201d \u201cDo-Re-Mi,\u201d \u201cSixteen Going on Seventeen,\u201d \u201cClimb Ev\u2019ry Mountain,\u201d \u201cEdelweiss,\u201d and \u201cSo Long, Farewell\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>The Candlelight Dinner Theater\u2019s production of \u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d runs through the last Sunday of the month. The show stars Sophie Jones as Maria Rainer and Paul McElwee as Captain Georg von Trapp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d\u00a0is a\u00a0musical\u00a0with music by\u00a0Richard Rodgers, lyrics by\u00a0Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by\u00a0Howard Lindsay\u00a0and\u00a0Russel Crouse. It is based on the 1949 memoir of\u00a0Maria von Trapp,\u00a0\u201cThe Story of the Trapp Family Singers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Set in Austria on the eve of the\u00a0Anschluss\u00a0in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father,\u00a0Captain von Trapp.<\/p>\n<p>He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children.<\/p>\n<p>The original\u00a0Broadway\u00a0production, starring\u00a0Mary Martin\u00a0and\u00a0Theodore Bikel, opened in 1959\u00a0and won five\u00a0Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The first London production opened at the\u00a0Palace Theatre\u00a0in 1961. The show has enjoyed numerous productions and revivals since then. It was adapted as a\u00a01965 film musical\u00a0starring\u00a0Julie Andrews\u00a0and\u00a0Christopher Plummer, which won five\u00a0Academy Awards, including Best Picture.<\/p>\n<p>Performances of \u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d are scheduled for Friday and Saturday evenings (doors 6 p.m.\/show, 8 p.m.) and Sunday afternoons (doors, 1 p.m.\/show, 3 p.m.). Tickets, which include dinner and the show, are $69 for adults and $33 for children (ages 4-12).<\/p>\n<p>This month, the theater is also hosting \u201cCandlelight Quizzo\u201d on August 21 at 6:30 p.m. and \u201cCandlelight Comedy Club\u201d on August 17 at 7:30 p.m. featuring Sheba Mason with Allan Fuks and Joe Murdock.<\/p>\n<p>Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center (226 North High Street, West Chester, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uptownwestchester.org\/\">www.uptownwestchester.org<\/a>) will present \u201cSir Paul: A Dedication\u00a0to Paul McCartney\u201d on August 12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir Paul\u201d is led by the soaring vocals of Mike Green. The multi-talented Green propels an incredible band through authentic, moving and energetic renditions of an expansive catalog of McCartney classics.<\/p>\n<p>The show on Saturday night will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35, $40 and $45.<\/p>\n<p>On August 11, Kennett Flash (102 Sycamore Alley, Kennett Square, 484-732-8295,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kennettflash.org\/\">http:\/\/www.kennettflash.org<\/a>) is presenting \u201cAn Evening with Jeffrey Gaines.\u201d Tickets for the show, which starts at 8 p.m., are $30 in advance and $35 at the door.<\/p>\n<p>The venue will have an \u201cOpen Mic Night\u201d on August 13.
