There are even two shows that will please both theater fans and film buffs at the same time \u2013 \u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d and \u201cHello Dolly!\u201d There is also another play that has a film version in its future \u2013 \u201cSMALL.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d\u00a0is an American <a id=\"OWAfb20974b-256a-efb6-6b44-5a8739821f9f\" title=\"Comedy drama\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comedy_drama\">comedy-drama film<\/a>\u00a0that was one of the most popular films in the 1990s \u2013 especially because of the comedic brilliance of Robin Williams.<\/p>\n<p>The movie, which also featured <a id=\"OWA8742f6eb-bb10-77a0-d8b0-35541758d92d\" title=\"Sally Field\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sally_Field\">Sally Field<\/a>, <a id=\"OWA396d0593-5ac2-80f3-b3b6-6d4c730dfcee\" title=\"Pierce Brosnan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierce_Brosnan\">Pierce Brosnan<\/a>, <a id=\"OWA55a3060b-97bf-a8b2-7869-37820f2f469d\" title=\"Harvey Fierstein\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harvey_Fierstein\">Harvey Fierstein<\/a>, and <a id=\"OWA719d4072-1ed3-db4c-b7e8-2c0ea53591a3\" title=\"Robert Prosky\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Prosky\">Robert Prosky<\/a>, was released in the United States by\u00a020th Century Fox\u00a0on November 24, 1993. It won the\u00a0Academy Award\u00a0for <a id=\"OWAf1aeebbd-e42b-5771-9dc9-3ea2f643084e\" title=\"Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Academy_Award_for_Best_Makeup_and_Hairstyling\">Best Makeup<\/a>,\u00a0and the\u00a0Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture \u2013 Musical or Comedy.\u00a0Williams was awarded the\u00a0Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture \u2013 Musical or Comedy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The film grossed $441.3\u00a0million on a $25\u00a0million budget, making it the\u00a0second highest-grossing film of 1993. It placed 67th in the <a id=\"OWA12f9e13f-2545-754e-f20e-5524f98ea0cb\" title=\"American Film Institute\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Film_Institute\">American Film Institute<\/a>\u2019s \u201c<a id=\"OWA680eadef-26be-2313-3c7f-547ecf3c2de3\" title=\"AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AFI%27s_100_Years...100_Laughs\">AFI\u2019s 100 Years&#8230;100 Laughs<\/a>\u201d list and 40th on <a id=\"OWAc707e197-ae7b-06c0-6463-704f35be89e4\" title=\"Bravo (American TV network)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bravo_(American_TV_network)\">Bravo<\/a>\u2019s \u201c100 Funniest Movies of All Time\u201d list. The original music score was composed by <a id=\"OWAb2faf591-36da-4dd1-5f5d-607188940c45\" title=\"Howard Shore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Howard_Shore\">Howard Shore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d has remained a fan favorite for more than three decades \u2013 because it is a really funny story and because of the comedic acting by Williams.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, \u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d was brought to the stage. It opened in the Pacific Northwest and then had its Broadway premiere in 2021. The stage musical has also had U.K. runs in London\u2019s West End and in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>The show closed on Broadway in May 2022 and then embarked on a National Tour in September 2023. The tour brings the rollicking comedy to Philadelphia for a two-week run.<\/p>\n<p>Ensemble Arts Philly and The Shubert Organization\u00a0are hosting the First National Tour of\u00a0\u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d at the Academy of Music (Broad and Locust streets, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/ensembleartsphilly.org\/\">ensembleartsphilly.org<\/a>) from February 6-18 of the 2023-24 Broadway series.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Doubtfire\u00a0is a\u00a0musical\u00a0based on the 1993 film\u00a0Mrs. Doubtfire, which in turn is based on the 1987 novel\u00a0Alias Madame Doubtfire\u00a0by\u00a0Anne Fine, with music and lyrics by\u00a0Karey\u00a0and\u00a0Wayne Kirkpatrick\u00a0and a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and\u00a0John O&#8217;Farrell. The musical is set in the city of\u00a0San Francisco,\u00a0California.<\/p>\n<p>With direction by four-time Tony Award\u00ae winner Jerry Zaks, the new musical comedy features a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O\u2019Farrell, as well as music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, the Tony Award\u00ae nominated team behind \u201cSomething Rotten!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d follows a recently divorced actor who disguises as an elderly female housekeeper to be able to interact with his children. The film addresses themes of divorce, separation, and the effect they have on a family.<\/p>\n<p>Out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard will do anything for his kids. After losing custody in a messy divorce, he creates the kindly alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives. As his new character takes on a life of its own, Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about how to be a father. This is a hysterical and heartfelt story about holding onto your loved ones against all odds.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia local, Rob McClure, is reprising his Tony Award\u00ae nominated dual roles of Daniel Hillard and Euphegenia Doubtfire alongside his co-star and real-life wife, Maggie Lakis, who plays Miranda Hillard in the U.S. National Tour.<\/p>\n<p>Another member of the cast with local connections is ensemble member Alex Ringer. Not that many years ago, Ringer was one of the multitude of students studying at the University of the Arts (and dreaming of one day appearing in a show a few blocks north on Broad Street at one of Ensemble Arts Philly\u2019s theater venues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI graduated from the University of the Arts in 2005,\u201d said Ringer, during a recent phone interview for a tour stop in Cleveland, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a jazz dance major and also had Carol Sklaroff as my ballet teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI studied mainly three forms of dance there \u2013 jazz, ballet and tap. A foundation in dance is a good way into musical theater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ringer travelled a long way to attend school in Philly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in Tempe, Arizona,\u201d said Ringer. \u201cUniversity of the Arts came to a Thespian Conference in Mesa, Arizona. I auditioned in dance and got accepted. I really like Philly. It was a good intro to city without being overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ringer returned to Philadelphia a few years ago as a member of the cast of \u201cPriscilla, Queen of the Desert\u201d in 2013 at the Academy of Music.<\/p>\n<p>Ringer made his Broadway debut in the 2009 revival of\u00a0\u201cWest Side Story.\u201d\u00a0 Other credits include the first national tour of the 2007 revival of\u00a0\u201cA Chorus Line,\u201d the 25th Anniversary North American tour of\u00a0\u201cCats,\u201d the 50th Anniversary European tour of\u00a0\u201cWest Side Story\u201d\u00a0and the Drama Desk Nominated Off-Broadway revival of\u00a0\u201cPageant: The Musical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has also choreographed the world and off-Broadway premieres of \u201cICONS\u201d and \u201cA Musical About Star Wars,\u201d as well as the off-Broadway revivals of\u00a0\u201cThe Marvelous Wonderettes\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cNaked Boys Singing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Presently, all of Ringer\u2019s attention is focused on \u201cMrs. Doubtfire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started the tour in Buffalo with tech and preview at the end of September,\u201d said Ringer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an ensemble member \u2013 singing and dancing and doing a lot of roles. I\u2019m Miranda\u2019s co-worker then the make-up guy. I\u2019m a backup singer at a TV station \u2013 and I\u2019m a chef.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great family show. It doesn\u2019t go blue and there is not a lot of harsh language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt speaks to families \u2013 especially the ending speech. Ticket prices start at $20.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello Dolly!\u201d is another show that was a huge hit both on screen and on stage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19154 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/HelloDolly_Small-768x512-1-350x233.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/>Candlelight Theatre (2208 Millers Road, Arden, Delaware, <a id=\"OWA430d620d-2558-b060-5c5a-bd26e953e987\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: http:\/\/www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org<\/a>) kicked off its 2024 season a few weeks ago with \u201cHello Dolly!\u201d, the musical adaptation of Thornton Wilder\u2019s play,\u00a0\u201cThe Matchmaker.\u201d\u00a0This comic and romantic story of the exploits of Dolly Gallagher-Levi, a matchmaker and \u201cwoman who arranges things,\u201d will run now through February 25.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that everybody is familiar with \u201cHello Dolly!\u201d in one form or another \u2013 especially the Academy Award-winning film and the hit Broadway musical.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard not to be familiar with the song, \u201cHello Dolly!\u201d\u2013 at least with the tune\u2019s opening lines\u2026\u00a0\u201cI said hello, Dolly; Well, hello, Dolly; It\u2019s so nice to have you back where you belong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cast at Candlelight features Rebecca Schall as Dolly\u00a0Gallagher\u00a0Levi, Johnny Fernandez as Horace Vandergelder, Jared Calhoun\u00a0as Cornelius Hackl,\u00a0Neena Boyle as Irene Molloy\u00a0and Shawn Weaver as Barnaby Tucker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello Dolly!\u201d tells the story of widow Dolly\u00a0Gallagher\u00a0Levi, a strongminded matchmaker who arrives in New York to \u201chelp\u201d Horace Vandergelder, a curmudgeonly and very wealthy widowed shop owner, find a new wife &#8212; while secretly plotting to marry him herself.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, two of Vandergelder\u2019s comedically enriched employees leave the shop abandoned and head out to the city in an effort to find adventure. Often referred to as \u201cBroadway\u2019s Greatest Musical\u201d, \u201cHello, Dolly!\u201d features sweeping dance numbers, hilarious missteps, endearing chaos and, of course, love.<\/p>\n<p>Schall gives a spellbinding performance in the title role \u2013 exhibiting the vocal chops and acting skills to capture the spirit of Dolly. Weaver, a Lincoln University graduate, and Calhoun sparkle in their roles as Vandergelder\u2019s store employees from Yonkers who experience the Big Apple for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello Dolly!\u201d became one of the most iconic Broadway shows of the latter half of the 1960s, running for 2,844 performances, and was the longest-running musical in Broadway history for a time.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, \u201cHello Dolly!\u201d has featured many of Broadway\u2019s top leading ladies, including Carol Channing, Mary Martin, Barbra Streisand, Pearl Bailey, Tovah Feldshuh, Bette Midler and Betty Buckley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything, we\u2019re still focused on the stage version rather than the film version,\u201d said Schall, whose television credits include \u201cBoardwalk Empire,\u201d \u201cMarvelous Mrs. Maisel,\u201d \u201cIn Case of Emergency,\u201d \u201cJulie and Julia,\u201d and \u201cPetuna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere definitely is a difference between stage and film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Audiences love the character Dolly, and Schall offers her take on why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDolly is happy, exuberant and effusive,\u201d said Schall. \u201cShe knows what she wants, and she goes for it. She\u2019s a bundle of energy \u2013 and a good person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bring a sense of quirkiness to the role. I agree one thousand per cent with her passion for helping others \u2013 for helping other people get better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne reason audiences love the show is the music. They know all the songs. The music is unbelievable \u2013 and the script is very well-written. This show is fun. It\u2019s just a beautiful show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello Dolly!\u201d is running now through February 25 at the Candlelight Dinner Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets, which include dinner, beverage and free parking, are $70.50 for adults and $35 for children (ages 4-12).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19155\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19155\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19155\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/small-350x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"224\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SMALL<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSMALL,\u201d which just opened at People\u2019s Light (39 Conestoga Road, Malvern, <a id=\"OWA83f773dc-db2f-41a7-1348-8f25983f68fc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleslight.org\/\">www.peopleslight.org<\/a>), is a one-man show that look at this man\u2019s life from playground to paddock, from playhouse to publishing\u2026to People\u2019s Light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSMALL\u201d is written and performed by stage, film, and television star Robert Montano (\u201cCats\u201d\u00a0on Broadway,\u00a0\u201cBarcelona\u201d\u00a0at People\u2019s Light).<\/p>\n<p>Bullied for his size, a boy from Long Island finds purpose and respect atop a racehorse in this wild autobiographical ride,<\/p>\n<p>As the young jockey starts to literally outgrow his childhood dream, he resorts to more and more extreme measures to remain \u201csmall\u201d before ultimately finding freedom in a new path. From Belmont Park to Broadway stages, Montano\u2019s vivid and highly entertaining coming-of-age story explores the complex realities of pursuing a dream at all costs.<\/p>\n<p>Montano\u00a0tells his coming-of-age story about Bobby, a teen from Long Island who enjoys musical theatre but becomes fascinated by the world of horse racing and aspires to be a jockey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a one-man play \u2013 and a very physical play,\u201d said Montano, during a phone interview from the theater in Malvern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a jockey, there is movement with me riding &#8212; along with an amazing sound design that Brian Ronan and I brought together.<\/p>\n<p>Ronan, the show\u2019s sound engineer, supplies the nearby racehorse whinnying. I\u2019m portraying 24 different characters \u2013 all with different voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story starts with a young Montano.<\/p>\n<p>When only entering his teenage years, Montano, known to his family as Bobby, fell in love with \u201cWest Side Story\u201d\u00a0and, in particular, with the character of Bernardo. He was stopped in his youthful ambition by his size. Just over five feet, he had retreated into timidity as a response to being regularly picked on at school.<\/p>\n<p>Behind his father\u2019s back, his mother took him to Belmont Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went to church together one Sunday and then went over to Belmont Park,\u201d said Montano, who was born in Bayside, Queens, and raised in Hempstead, LI. \u201cI fell in love with the place and the horses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Montano started regularly going to Belmont Raceway with his neighbors who work there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a newspaper delivery route with the L.I. Press,\u201d said Montaro. \u201cAt one of the houses, I talked to the people about the mulch they were using. They said it wasn\u2019t mulch \u2013 that I was probably smelling the horse manure from the car\u2019s tires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His newspaper customers were Bob and Sue Duncan, who were major figures at Belmont Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI begged them to take me with them to the track,\u201d said Montano.<\/p>\n<p>At Belmont Park, Montano was confronted by jockeys, especially by Robert A. Pineda. Impressed at the powerful Pineda presence, Montano switched from wanting to grow to wanting to remain small so he could pursue a career as a jockey.<\/p>\n<p>Montano became determined to become a jockey. Eventually, Pineda became his mentor.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, his dreams of remaining a jockey blew up. Montano continued to grow physically \u2013 from 5-foot, 4-inches to 5-8 and 110 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>The day before riding Sow &amp; Reap in a major race, Montano weighed in at 116 pounds. He had to shed 12 pounds overnight. What he had to do to accomplish is a main part of the plot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did all kinds of things to keep my weight down \u2013 black beauties, coke, flipping food on daily basis,\u201d said Montano.<\/p>\n<p>By the time he was 18, Montano had outgrown his silks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I couldn\u2019t make it as a jockey, it was \u2018small\u2019 because I\u2019m not,\u201d said Montano. \u201cWhen I couldn\u2019t ride anymore, I didn\u2019t have anything to do with my life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to transfer disciples from jockey to dance. I knew I had to work \u2013 and I had to work hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Montano had dancing skills he developed when he was young, so he decided to delve further into dance. He applied to Adelphi University&#8217;s dance department at age 20 without any prior training. He was accepted and offered a full scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne week before graduating, I got a role in \u2018Cats\u2019 on Broadway,\u201d said Montano. \u201cI had the role of Pouncival and was the understudy for Mr. Mistofelees. I did that for four-and-one-half years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His career was successful from the start, and he worked with great directors and choreographers such as Hal Prince, Rob Marshall, and Jerome Robbins. He has also worked with Chita Rivera in \u201cKiss of The Spiderwoman, sang and danced with Peter Allen in \u201cLegs Diamond,\u201d and starred as Ozzie in \u201cOn The Town\u201d (directed by the legendary George C. Wolfe).<\/p>\n<p>Montano\u2019s creativity now spans genres. The multitasker ventured into plays, film, and television.<br \/>\nIn television, he guest starred in Showtime\u2019s \u201cCity On A Hill,\u201d \u201cBull,\u201d \u201cProdigal Son,\u201d \u201cBlue Bloods,\u201d \u201cNCIS: New Orleans,\u201d \u201cElementary,\u201d \u201cSearch Party,\u201d \u201cLaw &amp; Order: SVU,\u201d \u201cSex In The City,\u201d \u201cCSI: Miami, Law &amp; Order,\u201d and HBO\u2019s film \u201cUndefeated\u201d (directed by <a id=\"OWAc9c62234-81f4-50fb-d670-5183fba60ed0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/John-Leguizamo\/\" target=\"newwinddow\" rel=\"noopener\">John Leguizamo<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>His film credits include \u201cShame\u201d with <a id=\"OWAbb549b9b-d74f-3dd3-72f9-45f089c09386\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Michael-Fassbender\/\" target=\"newwinddow\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Fassbender<\/a>, playing opposite <a id=\"OWA8032cb4c-5ebf-3385-d337-ec5912458ac1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Mark-Wahlberg\/\" target=\"newwinddow\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Wahlberg<\/a>\u00a0and <a id=\"OWA4cca1624-54c7-2365-e2f3-ca107ded88f5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Joaquin-Phoenix\/\" target=\"newwinddow\" rel=\"noopener\">Joaquin Phoenix<\/a>\u00a0in \u201cThe Yards\u201d and partnering with <a id=\"OWA35f52d02-db89-5f4f-3852-a0bff9039773\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Catherine-Zeta-Jones\/\" target=\"newwinddow\" rel=\"noopener\">Catherine Zeta-Jones<\/a>\u00a0in \u201cChicago.\u201d Other notable works include \u201cHustling,\u201d \u201cThe Strike,\u201d \u201cCenter Stage,\u201d \u201cIt Runs in The Family,\u201d and \u201cPassionada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSMALL,\u201d which is directed by Jessi D. Hill, is celebrating its area debut with the run at People\u2019s Light\u2019s Steinbright Stage \u2013 and the first date of its 2024 national tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be my third show at People\u2019s Light,\u201d said Montano. \u201cThe first was \u2018Fallow\u2019 in 2012 followed by \u2018Barcelona\u2019 in 2012. Knauer Performing Arts Center (226 North High Street, West Chester, <a id=\"OWA6e39a8c7-22e1-c5bc-70f9-b17ac8e9e6da\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uptownwestchester.org\/\">www.uptownwestchester.org<\/a>) will continue its pattern of presenting concerts by tributes acts.<\/p>\n<p>Kategory5 Band will headline a show at the venue in West Chester on February 2 followed by \u201cAbsolute Adele Tribute with Jennifer Cella\u201d on February 3.<\/p>\n<p>Local favorite\u00a0Kategory5 Band, which first performed at Kennett Flash in 2014, features Kat Pigliacampi (lead vocals, keyboards), Jeremy Green (drums, vocals), Brian Becker (lead guitar, vocals), Kyle Frederick (bass guitar) and John Cassidy (synthesizer).<\/p>\n<p>Kategory5 Band is a cover band featuring a diverse group of talented &#8212; and veteran &#8211; musicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us have played music in the area for decades,\u201d said Pigliacampi. \u201cWe have a big fan base from our solo work. We took 70s and 80s songs that aren\u2019t necessarily mainstream and brought them back to life. We\u2019re mixing it up. Our goal is to play a good nostalgic show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pigliacampi listed some of the bands whose songs\u00a0Kategory\u00a05 has in its repertoire &#8212; a diverse list that includes Abba, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Journey, Dave Mason, REO, the Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, America and the Beatles.<\/p>\n<p>The show on Friday night is billed as \u201cKategory5- Goodson Girls Benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band posted this \u2013 \u201cJoin us for an evening of music performed by Kategory5, a classic rock band covering the best of rock, blues, R&amp;B and pop music from the 70&#8217;s &amp; 80&#8217;s in an all-ages show to benefit The Goodson Girls.<\/p>\n<p>Sierra Goodson suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm in September and is doing intense outpatient therapy to overcome some ongoing issues. Her mom, Linda, had a bad fall in November when a flight of stairs collapsed under her.
