Josh Shapiro announced the award of more than $51 million in grant<br \/>\nfunding through the Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF) throughout the Commonwealth. These funds<br \/>\nmay be used for transportation initiatives including highway, bridge, port, bike and pedestrian<br \/>\nimprovements. The Borough of Phoenixville was awarded $900,000 for the Bridge and Starr Street (SR-<br \/>\n29) intersection improvement project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m thrilled to announce that we are continuing to invest in infrastructure projects in Chester County,\u201d<br \/>\ncommented State Representative Paul Friel. \u201cThis funding will address some key safety, traffic flow and<br \/>\npublic transportation needs in Phoenixville benefiting the whole community.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Bridge and Starr Street intersection project will improve the existing three-way intersection,<br \/>\nallowing for a more efficient flow of traffic and increased pedestrian safety by adding a straight-through<br \/>\nlane on Starr Street, extending Starr Street north. This project has been identified in multiple local and<br \/>\nregional planning studies as a priority to improve traffic operations and reduce congestion. Sidewalk<br \/>\nconnectivity and pedestrian crosswalks are another component of this project that will improve<br \/>\npedestrian safety. With the addition of the 4th lane, residents and visitors will be able to safely access<br \/>\nthe Borough managed Ashland Street parking lot and the Schuylkill River trailhead.<\/p>\n<p>Upon learning of the awarded funds, Borough Council President Jonathan Ewald remarked, &#8220;This grant<br \/>\nis a significant boost for our ongoing efforts to improve Phoenixville\u2019s infrastructure. The<br \/>\nplanned enhancements will not only address current challenges but also set the stage for future<br \/>\ngrowth.\u201d He went on to say, &#8220;This investment will alleviate congestion and provide a smoother,<br \/>\nmore accessible route for all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This project has an estimated cost of $3 million. In addition to this award of $900,000, the Borough was<br \/>\nawarded a Chester County Community Revitalization Grant of $727,278, as well as a Department of<br \/>\nCommunity and Economic Development Multimodal Transportation Fund grant for $600,000.
