Knauer Performing Arts Center (226 North High Street, West Chester, <a id=\"OWA83b47bb7-c1e6-66df-28f3-5da9e229e2da\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uptownwestchester.org\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">www.uptownwestchester.org<\/a>) \u00a0on November 22 is more than just a concert.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Renowned regional rockers\u00a0Superunknown, who have been captivating audiences with their stirring renditions of Chris Cornell classics, have announced that they will be dedicating their\u00a0November 22\u00a0show at the\u00a0Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center\u00a0to all U.S. Veterans.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>During this special performance, the band will recognize all attending Veterans and personally thank them for their sacrifice, service, and commitment to safeguarding the freedoms of the U.S.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Superunknown, which features Marine Corps Veteran and Vocalist\/Guitarist Jason Reed, will also donate all proceeds from the evening\u2019s merchandise sales, as well as a portion of the ticket sales, to the \u201cStop Soldier Suicide\u201d organization.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201c<a id=\"OWAfcc703bc-d8a5-87ab-3865-b2198b9a9142\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: http:\/\/stopsoldiersuicide.org\/. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"http:\/\/stopsoldiersuicide.org\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Stop Soldier Suicide<\/a>\u201d\u00a0is the only national 501(c)(3)\u00a0nonprofit focused solely on solving the issue of suicide among U.S. veterans and service members.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show will highlight two of Reed\u2019s main interests \u2013Veterans and the music of Seattle-based grunge and Soundgarden.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI was in the Marine Corps twice,\u201d said Reed, during a phone interview this week from Exton, the location of his realty office.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe first time was 1991-1995 and then I got out. Then, when 911 happened, I re-enlisted. I was in from 2001-2003 the second time.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Reed is a Thorndale native who graduated from Bishop Shanahan in 1990.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cAfter I graduated high school, I got caught up reading about the Gulf War, so I considered joining the military,\u201d said Reed. \u201cI interviewed with all the branches and chose the Marine Corps.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Life in the Marines Corps also introduced Reed to the music of Soundgarden.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Soundgarden\u00a0was formed in\u00a0Seattle in 1984 by singer and drummer\u00a0Chris Cornell, lead guitarist\u00a0Kim Thayil, and bassist\u00a0Hiro Yamamoto. Cornell switched to rhythm guitar in 1985.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Following Cornell\u2019s death in 2017, Thayil declared in October 2018 that Soundgarden would not continue.<\/div>\n<div>The band helped to popularize\u00a0grunge\u00a0music, a style of\u00a0alternative rock\u00a0that developed in the American\u00a0Pacific Northwest\u00a0in the mid-1980s, alongside such Seattle contemporaries as\u00a0Mark Lanegan, Alice in Chains,\u00a0Pearl Jam, and\u00a0Nirvana. They were the first of a number of grunge bands to sign to the Seattle-based record label\u00a0Sub Pop.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Soundgarden achieved its biggest success with the 1994 album\u00a0\u201cSuperunknown,\u201d which debuted at number one on the\u00a0Billboard\u00a0200\u00a0and yielded the\u00a0Grammy Award-winning singles \u201cSpoonman\u201d and \u201cBlack Hole Sun.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen I was young, I was into Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and Jimi Hendrix,\u201d said Reed.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen I was in high school and middle school, I played in a band with my brothers. I was always chosen to be the singer because I could do high vocals \u2013 and powerful vocals.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Before long, Reed expanded his musical tastes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI was turned on to Soundgarden when I was in the Marines,\u201d said Reed, who has a realty office in Exton (Keller Williams Exton). \u201cI heard the song \u2018Badmotorfinger\u2019 and I loved them after that.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen I first heard Chris Cornell. It reminded me of Aerosmith and Led Zep from the early 70s \u2013 bands who projected with high register.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Reed\u00a0served in the Marine Corps two times for a total of six years. He was on active\u00a0duty from 1991-1995, deployed five times in four years to Mogadishu, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Middle East, and Europe. He was out for six years when\u00a09\/11 happened at which time he re-enlisted.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The decorated Veteran embarked on his Superunknown career 15 years after returning to civilian life.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIn 2018, I was doing solo acoustic shows,\u201d said Reed. \u201cI was playing Soundgarden and Chris Cornell songs.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI did some shows on the same bill as White Limo, a Foo Fighters tribute band. Their drummer Ron DiSilvestro offered to be my backup band.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI sent him five or six songs. Then, we got together, and it was magic. We plowed through the set.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>The band Superunknown came into existence.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As part of Superunknown, which also features Louis Graff (Guitar), Tom Laskas (Bassist), Ron DiSilvestro (Drums), and Pete Hefley (Guitar), Reed has had the opportunity to give back to servicemen and women and work with the Armed Forces Entertainment to\u00a0perform at almost a dozen military bases around the world.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cStarting in 2019, I was doing shows with Armed Forces Entertainment,\u201d said Reed. \u201cWe go out to other countries and play for deployed troops.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThis year, we did a tour of the Mideast and played shows in Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>According to Reed, \u201cIt\u2019s been amazing going back and performing for the troops 25-30 years after I was serving on active duty&#8211; even back to some of the same regions where I served in the 90s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe\u2019ve performed\u00a0on a number of bases that have multinational forces, so in addition to U.S. service members, we\u2019ve played for members of the military\u00a0from the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy\u00a0and a number of other nations.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cLocally, we\u2019ve been playing bigger clubs and theaters. This will be a return show at Uptown. He last performed there in January 2024.<\/p><\/div>\n<div>Popa\u00a0Chubby\u00a0made his Gulf Coast Records label debut with a new album, \u201cLive at G. Bluey\u2019s Juke Joint NYC,\u201d which came out last year.<\/div>\n<div>\u201c<\/div>\n<div>I just put out a double live album,\u201d said\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby, during a phone interview. \u201cIt came out in September 2023. We\u2019ve been touring the double album ever since.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt\u2019s been in the Billboard Top 10 for the last six weeks. It really is a good record \u2013 one of the best I\u2019ve done. There\u2019s two hours and 20 minutes of music and all were songs requested by fans.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Popa\u00a0Chubby\u2019s most recent previous albums were \u201cPrime Cuts: The Very Best of the Beast from the East,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a Mighty Hard Road,\u201d \u201cTinfoil Hat,\u201d and \u201cEmotional Gangster.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI toured \u2018Emotional Gangster\u2019 for a year and got great responses,\u201d said\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby. \u201cIt was suggested to me to do a \u2018Best of\u2019 so I decided to play a live \u2018best of\u2019 to a studio audience.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThis is something different \u2013 something not done before. I don\u2019t think that anyone did a \u2018Best of\u2019 fan requested.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI had two nights of playing for a studio audience. It wasn\u2019t recorded at a theater or a club. It was two nights live at G. Bluey\u2019s Juke Joint.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>GB\u2019s Juke Joint is a full-service recording studio and event space in Long Island City, Queens located by the East River just across midtown Manhattan. It features analog and digital capabilities, a vast collection of instruments, microphones, and vintage and modern gear.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt was an invitation only event \u2013 friends and family,\u201d said\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby. \u201cI played songs from all my albums. Luckily, I have a really good band, and it all came together pretty easily.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Popa\u00a0Chubby\u2019s stellar \u201cBeast Band\u201d features Mike Merritt on bass (Conan O\u2019Brien, Billy Gibbons); Mike Dimeo on keyboards (Johnny Winter, Tommy James); and Stefano Giudici on drums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt was remarkable,\u201d said\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby. \u201cWe had two nights of shows to pick from when putting the album together. Everything was perfect. The band was an important part.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe shows were in November in Long Island City at an amazing sound stage. We also shot a five-camera video for our YouTube website. I\u2019m just giving the videos away.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In 2019, the veteran rocker just released another \u2018Best of\u2019 album \u2014 \u201cPrime Cuts \u2013 The Very Best of the Beast from the East.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>With a career spanning more than 30 years,\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby delivered a hand-picked anthology of 15 tracks from his prolific and ever-expanding catalogue. \u201cPrime Cuts\u201d reflects\u00a0Popa\u2019s choice of the best of his best \u2014 tracks that keep the Chubby legacy fresh and the fans happy.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI went all the way back and picked the best stuff from my last 38 records,\u201d said\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby. \u201cThere were two criteria. First, I had to really like the song. Second, it had to be music the fans request.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cA lot of it was easy. A a lot came down to the fans \u2013 \u2018Sweet Goddess of Love and Beer,\u2019 \u2018Angel on My Shoulder,\u2019 \u2018Light of Day\u2019 \u2013 give the people what they want.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThey were all original album tracks, but some were alternate mixes. I did a lot of re-mastering. There were also two new tracks \u2013 and a Christmas song. It took a couple months to put it all together. It just came out at the end of November.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Popa\u00a0Chubby\u2019s two prior studio albums were \u201cThe Catfish\u201d in 2016 and \u201cTwo Dogs\u201d in 2017.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI never stop recording,\u201d said\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby. \u201cI recorded \u2018Two Dogs\u2019 right after I finished making \u2018The Catfish.\u2019 I\u2019m working on my next album now. I\u2019m starting to come up with new ideas. I want to do something original.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI have a studio in my home. For D.I.Y. stuff, I use ProTools. My studio is filled with vintage stuff \u2013 RCA mics, old compressors and vintage guitars and drums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI have a background in recording. I worked as an engineer, and I started out working with tape. It\u2019s all digital now \u2014 but I have an analog way of getting in and an analog way of getting out.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen I was working with Tom Dowd, a legendary engineer, he was so happy to go to digital instead of tape.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He explained that each time the tape goes over the (recording) head, it loses particles.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Finding time to get in the studio is a luxury for\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m never home,\u201d said\u00a0Popa\u00a0Chubby. \u201cIt seems that I\u2019m always touring a lot. The progression of my career has been slow and steady. I like to give people real music. The best music for me comes from not making music. It comes from me jamming with myself.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cOn this tour, we\u2019re playing the new double record in its entirety \u2013 and there are some surprises. Recording and mixing mostly in their homes, the trio has total freedom in the studio, often trading instruments and experimenting with unconventional instruments such as pitch shifted harmonica, marxophone, prepared piano, kazoo, and unloved vintage drum machines.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cBound\u201d is a genre-blending, pyretic journey to the extremes. Recorded in Philadelphia at Dan Angel\u2019s In The Shadow of Boner Forever studio space as well as at band members\u2019 home studios,\u00a0\u201cBound\u201d\u00a0is being self-released November 22 on cassette, CD, digital download, and through streaming services.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe started recording \u2018Bound\u2019 on October 13 \u2013 Friday the 13th,\u201d said Pond, during a recent phone interview. \u201cOn our first album, we started on Friday the 13ht. It\u2019s supposed to be a bad luck day but it\u2019s always been a good luck day for us.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe usually record at home. We have a pretty good home studio. This was the first time we used an outside studio. The album is still a mix of some at home and some processed at the studio.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe mixed it at home. We live in West Parkside near the Mann Center. The studio was off Broad Street near Lycoming and the Boner Forever Building, an old, abandoned building.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Another new facet this time is the release.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI wanted to self-release this one,\u201d said Pond. \u201cI like the process of putting together an album. In the past, I just did the artwork.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The band is based in Philly, but Scurr is the only Quaker City native.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m from Richmond and Levi is from D.D.,\u201d said Pond. \u201cI moved from there to D.C. Prior to coming to Philly, I had lived in D.C. for 13 years. There is a good D.I.Y. scene there.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWith Luna Honey, we\u2019ve never had a drummer in the band. It started out as a studio project with me and Levi. Ben produced our first recordings. There was good chemistry, so it became a band.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Schurr, who was born in Philadelphia, moved back to his home city in 2019 with Flack following shortly after. Christmas Eve of 2019, Pond\u2019s aunt shared she had months to live and asked her to write her some music to help accept her transition, asking that it could be released after her death.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Still living in D.C., Pond recruited Ben to come down to her house in Anacostia and record an intense week of highly improvised sessions. The two worked around the clock on what would become the fourth album Luna Honey, \u201cBranches.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After the pandemic hit in 2020, Pond moved back to her hometown of Richmond to be closer to her parents and Schurr followed. All three band members commuted back and forth between Richmond and Philadelphia continuing to write songs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The album \u201cParables\u201d was written during the period of geographic separation across D.C., Philadelphia, and Richmond.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Then, Pond\u2019s mother passed after an over a decade long fight with cancer. In the wake of her mother\u2019s passing, Pond had found comfort in the solo work of longtime Swans guitarist Norman Westberg and ended up striking up a long-distance collaboration.\u00a0The result was the \u201cAftermath\u201d album, a meditation on grief and what is left behind.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In 2022, Pond and Schurr moved to Philadelphia, finally reuniting the band within the same city.
