The Coatesville Area School District has been abuzz with bees this past week \u2013 the spelling variety. Four separate competitions \u2013 involving words like baccalaureate, coalescence and grandiloquence – were held with students from CASD\u2019s elementary and middle schools as well as students from Pope John Paul II.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Rainbow Elementary School hosted the elementary bee.\u00a0 Friendship Elementary tied for first-place overall with PJPII and will be taking home the trophy for the remainder of the school year.\u00a0 PJPII will take possession of it at the start of the next school year and hold it until the 2014 CASD Spelling Bee.<\/p>\n

In the third, fourth, and fifth-grade competitions, Coatesville finished in first and second places while PJPII took third. Third-grade winners were Jacob Wioskowski, first place from Rainbow Elementary; Braydon Shaffer, second place from East Fallowfield; and Grace Curry, third place from Pope John Paul II. Fourth-grade honors went to Lauren Hatt, first place, Caln; Kate Miller, second place, Friendship; and Eddie Ross, third place, Pope John Paul II. Fifth-place finishers were Curry Ellzy, first, King’s Highway; Amber Cura, second, Friendship; and Madisyn Miller, third, Pope John Paul II.<\/p>\n

South Brandywine Middle School hosted the middle-school bee on Friday with PJPII earning first-place overall.\u00a0 Organizers said the middle-school competitions, which had previously been grade-specific, were combined into one contest to mirror the Chester County Spelling Bee, which will be held on Feb. 8.\u00a0 So among the combined sixth- seventh- and eighth-graders, PJPII placed first and Coatesville placed second and third. The winners were \u00a0Connor Mallon, an eighth-grader from Pope John Paul II in first place; \u00a0Madison Moore, a South Brandywine eighth-grader in second place; and Jeffrey Martin, a sixth-grader from South Brandywine in third.<\/p>\n

Winners from fifth through eighth grade \u00a0will advance to the county competition, said Jonette Marcus, a Coatesville school district spokeswoman.<\/p>\n
