Unfortunately, most of the comedy clubs are located in and around Center City.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Fortunately for those fans, there is one night a month when they can attend a show featuring top-flight comedians without the hassle of driving in Philly and having to deal with irritating traffic and a scarcity of parking spaces.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>That one night is the night when the Candlelight Theater (2208 Millers Road, Arden, Delaware,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.candlelighttheatredelaware.org%2F&amp;data=05%7C01%7C%7C0a1444967e25449d824808daff66937a%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C638103113327353041%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=qgTJlnN6CT4ZPmU4VcQ9rVG3TchwSASq8t%2BAgXsnPk8%3D&amp;reserved=0\">www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org<\/a>) presents its monthly edition of \u201cCandlelight Comedy Club.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On January 23, it\u2019s time for the January edition of \u201cCandlelight Comedy Club\u201d at the venue just over the Pennsylvania-Delaware state line \u2013 a venue that features ample free parking.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This month\u2019s main act will be John\u00a0Poveromo\u00a0with Joanne Filian and Belynda Cleare as the opening acts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Poveromo, a veteran and versatile comedian, is likely to change his set on the spot based on the crowd and whatever is on his mind.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Born in Brooklyn and raised in Toms River,\u00a0Poveromo\u00a0gravitated toward humor ever since he was a youngster.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI didn\u2019t hang out in the music scene,\u201d said\u00a0Poveromo, during a phone interview.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI was much more interested in stand-up. For me, humor was a way to cope with stuff. I saw grownups coping with things with humor. I remember when I was about five and my parents were watching a video of Richard Jeni\u2019s \u2018Crazy from the Heat\u2019 and they were laughing like crazy.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI also really liked Robin Williams from his TV shows like \u2018Mork &amp; Mindy\u2019 and that was another gateway to comedy for me. Then, I got into Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Reiser and Ellen and found out they all started with stand-up. And I liked stand-ups because they told it like it was.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Poveromo\u2019s knack for being funny became evident during his high school days.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI ended up getting named \u2018Class Comedian\u2019 out of 500 kids at Toms River East High School,\u201d said\u00a0Poveromo. \u201cMy sense of humor was always about cracking jokes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI went to college after I graduated high school at Brookdale Community College. I didn\u2019t want to go to college, but I had to do it because if you didn\u2019t go to college, you were a failure.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI left school after a year and took a stand-up course in New York. That was back in 2005. My first time on stage was at Carolines On Broadway \u2013 no pressure, right?\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Carolines on Broadway is a venue for stand-up comedy located in Times Square in New York City on Broadway between 49th and 50th Street. It is one of the most established, famous, and recognized stand-up comedy clubs in the United States.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI was taking a risk,\u201d said\u00a0Poveromo. \u201cI wasn\u2019t going up with \u2018five minutes of comedy that worked\u2019 attitude. I thought \u2013 you just go on with whatever when you get onstage.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIn the beginning, I\u2019d go up with a couple ideas. I just do my own material \u2013 whatever I wanted talk about \u2013 because I\u2019m naturally funny.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Since childhood,\u00a0Poveromo\u00a0has enjoyed making strangers laugh. He has written comedy for shows on HBO and VH1, as well as his own book, \u201cDrawings From a Nobody,\u201d which features his comic-strip style drawings of scenes from everyday life.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Poveromo\u2019s perfect blend of self-deprecation and optimism makes him a dynamic and unpredictable performer who is both engaging and fun to watch as he struggles to make sense of himself and the world around him.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He can be heard on Sirius XM Radio, has been featured at the Jersey City Comedy Festival and The New York Underground Comedy Festival, and has appeared on Comcast On Demand\u2019s \u201cYoung Comedians Showcase.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Poveromo\u00a0also has written for a variety of shows, including ESPN\u2019s Sports Nation, Current TV\u2019s Viewpoint with John Fugelsang, Joy Behar\u2019s Say Anything on HLN, The Independents, and CNN Newsroom, as well as Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld, Hannity, and VH1\u2019s \u201cBest Of\u201d series.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Poveromo\u00a0hosts \u201cDystopia Tonight,\u201d a livestreaming show on Apple Podcasts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show was conceived during the pandemic, when comedians such as\u00a0Poveromo\u00a0were brainstorming ways to adapt and reinvent themselves.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It started as comics sitting around shooting the breeze (Tom Papa, Judy Gold), and has expanded to include actors (Megan Cavanagh, Ed Begley Jr., Ed Asner!), musicians (Art Alexakis from Everclear, Marlana Sheetz of Milo Greene), and visual artists (comic book artist John Romita Jr. and Pulitzer-winning editorial cartoonist Steve Breen), and most recently comedy legend Lewis Black.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cDystopia Tonight\u201d was born out of the Covid-19 Pandemic to give people a light-hearted break from the absurdity of the world around them by showcasing artists, comedians, musicians, and actors from all across the entertainment field.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Aside from touring the country as a comedian, Poveromo is also an accomplished cartoonist. His cartoons have been published in numerous magazines, newspapers and online publications. She fronts a blues\/rock band, composes music for film and television and is an author.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Devi\u00a0plays powerful blues-rockers and blistering psychedelic jams flavored with her soulful voice and expressive guitar playing.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Devi\u2019s new live EP,\u00a0\u201cJamification Station Vol. 1,\u201d captures her Jersey City band at full throttle. The EP reached #5 on the\u00a0Relix\/<a href=\"https:\/\/na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fjambands.com%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7C%7C423bc325d2a445e5fb8e08dccea4210c%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C638612451556251948%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=oCae02MiDOLI3s%2BWPiQC6SkEsZzbd4NRVqpXPmU6M9k%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Jambands.com<\/a>\u00a0Top 30 Radio Chart and then stayed on the chart for three months.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Devi, who has lived all over the country, has called Jersey City home for the last six years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI was born in Florida &#8212; in Jacksonville&#8211; and then grew up in Milwaukee,\u201d said\u00a0Devi, during a phone interview from her home in North Jersey. \u201cGrowing up in Milwaukee, I was exposed to a lot of Chicago blues.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI went to high school in Milwaukee and then got a degree in economics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI always wanted to be a writer, but my parents wanted me to choose a more practical career. I had a journalism minor at the University of Wisconsin and then got into Columbia University for grad school where I majored in journalism.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI put it to good use. When I first was living in New York, I was a little punk rocker in the East Village. I also played in different kinds of bands. I had been playing electric guitar for about six months.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI always loved the blues, so I started writing and singing my own songs. It was more 70s blues\/rock than punk.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Devi\u2019s self-produced debut,\u00a0\u201cGet Free\u201d\u00a0(True Nature Records\/Redeye), received raves from\u00a0Vintage Guitar,\u00a0Jambase,\u00a0Marie Claire\u00a0(Italy) and Guitar International.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy guitar playing is very influenced by Chicago blues,\u201d said\u00a0Devi. \u201cThe first show I saw was Son Seals and Koko Taylor at the Metropole. I try to do what Son does \u2013 not play a lot of notes but just play the right note.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cBlues has been a guidepost ever since. Blues taught me what I know about music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy band and I play blues\/rock with improvisation \u2013 with jamming. We love to improvise. People love that spontaneity.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhat is exciting today is the jam band scene. They\u2019re taking flight from improvisation. I\u2019m one of the few females in the jam band scene.\u201d<br \/>\nDevi\u00a0has opened for Joan Osborne, Jesse Malin, Ana Popovic, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, Uprooted (Michael Glialiki) and Marshall Crenshaw. In 2023, she co-headlined the Haverford Music Festival with Joe Louis Walker and The Bongos, and the East Pete Blues Festival with Greg Sover.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Gov&#8217;t Mule bassist Jorgen Carlsson joined\u00a0Devi\u00a0on her previous EP, \u201cA Zillion Stars Overhead.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI released that album in April 2020 \u2013 not a good time to do that with the pandemic just starting,\u201d said\u00a0Devi. \u201cMy most recent album is \u2018Jamification Station Vol. 1.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cJamification Station Vol. 1\u201d is a live EP culled from\u00a0Devi\u2019s livestream show, \u201cJamification Station,\u201d hosted by American Blues Scene. Four tracks capture\u00a0Devi\u00a0and her band at full throttle, from catchy \u201cHome Again\u201d to a blistering rendition of Jimi Hendrix\u2019s \u201cCrosstown Traffic.\u201d Also featured is a soulful blues-rocker, \u201cGet Free\u201d and uplifting Southern-rock tune \u201cThe River.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The EP was released on June 20, 2022. Musicians on the recording were:\u00a0Debra\u00a0Devi\u00a0&#8211; vocal, guitar; Kevin Jones &#8211; bass, background vocal; John Roccesano &#8211; drums, background vocal; and Martin Schmid &#8211; keys, background vocal.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>All songs recorded live by Roccesano at Silver Horse Sound in Hoboken, New Jersey except \u201cThe River,\u201d which was recorded live by Corey Zack at The Cocoon in Jersey City. The first Thursday of the month will be the Philadelphia Blues Society.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe second Thursday will be Dueling Pianos and Lisa Chavous will have her show every third Thursday. The fourth Thursday will be A.C. Steel and the Perpetrators. There will be a movie night in the five months when there is a fifth Thursday.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Every Sunday, Jamey\u2019s presents \u201cSUNDAY BLUES BRUNCH &amp; JAM\u201d featuring the Philly Blues Kings. On the second Sunday of each month, the featured act is the Girke-Davis Project which features club owner Jamey Reilly, Roger Girke, Glenn Bickel, Fred Berman and Colgan-Davis.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chuck Prophetand His Cumbia Shoes, which features two members of the celebrated Salinas, CA-based cumbia band\u00a0\u00bfQiensave?\u00a0along with Prophet\u2019s long-time band, The Mission Express,\u00a0will play\u00a0World Cafe Live\u00a0(3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcafelive.com\/\"><u>www.worldcafelive.com<\/u><\/a>) on\u00a0January 24.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show will be an album release event in support of Prophet and his band\u2019s recently released\u00a0album, \u201cWake The Dead?\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Recorded live in-studio with The Mission Express and \u00bfQiensave?, a band of brothers from a farming community a hundred miles from San Francisco,\u00a0\u201cWake The Dead\u201d\u00a0marks a departure for Prophet, best known for his Americana and rock leanings.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Prophet has created a genre-defying album that bridges cultures, generations, and musical boundaries. An extraordinary and unlikely pairing,\u00a0\u201cWake The Dead\u201d\u00a0blends Prophet and \u00bfQiensave? seamlessly diving headfirst into the cumbia music world.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cumbia\u00a0refers to a number of musical rhythms and folk-dance traditions of\u00a0Latin America, generally involving musical and cultural elements from American Indigenous peoples, Europeans and Africans during colonial times. Cumbia is said to have come from funeral traditions in the\u00a0Afro-Colombian\u00a0community.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cumbia traditionally uses three drums (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tambora_(drum)\">tambora<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Tambor_alegre&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">tambor alegre<\/a>, llamador) and three flutes (gaita hembra\u00a0and\u00a0gaito macho,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ca%C3%B1a_de_millo\">flauta de millo<\/a>). The genre frequently incorporates\u00a0brass instruments\u00a0and\u00a0piano.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The sound of cumbia can be characterized as having a simple &#8220;chu-chucu-chu&#8221; rhythm created by the\u00a0guacharaca.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Most Hispanic American countries have made their own regional version of Cumbia, some of them with their own particularity.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Colombian cumbia\u00a0is a musical rhythm and traditional folk dance from\u00a0Colombia.\u00a0It has elements of three different cultures &#8212; American Indigenous, African, and Spanish. The Colombian cumbia is the origin of all the other variations.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Prophet\u2019s fascination with cumbia, a vibrant genre originating from Colombia, began after experiencing a weekly cumbia night at a local San Francisco haunt.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He quickly became obsessed: collecting old vinyl from Latin America, studying its origins, DJing, and loading his friends up with new mixes every time they came to visit.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Following a cancer diagnosis, he had a lot of time to sit and listen as he went through treatments.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When a stage four lymphoma diagnosis forced him off the road and into the hospital, Prophet didn\u2019t know if he\u2019d live long enough to see the end of the year, let alone get back on tour.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>According to Prophet, \u201cI was going through a tunnel. It was dark. But I had music &#8212; music to play, music to listen to, music to get me out of my head.
