It was formerly called Head of Elk because it sits at the head of navigation on the Elk River, one of the five tributary rivers in the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The town constitutes part of the\u00a0Delaware Valley. It was once known as the\u00a0\u201cGretna Green\u00a0of the East of the US\u201d because of its popularity as a place for\u00a0eloping\u00a0couples to marry.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">That history is part of what makes Elkton \u201cspecial.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In the early 20th century, couples who needed a quick marriage would seek out one of the towns across the country which had fewer restrictions on marriage licenses.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Because of its geography and the lack of a waiting period (which had become mandatory in neighboring states by the early 1910s),<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Elkton, once known as the marriage capital of the East Coast, was one of the busiest of these \u201cmarriage mills.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Elkton\u2019s Chesapeake location made it a convenient destination for couples coming from the northeastern states \u2013 driving or riding the rails.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This was a gold mine for cabbies.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The hacks met couples arriving on the southbound trains from New York, New Jersey and other Northeastern states (called the \u201cHoneymoon Express\u201d) and offered them package deals that helped create an economic windfall for the town of Elkton.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">New York Giants Hall of Fame outfielder Willie Mays married Marguerite Wendelle in Elkton in 1956. In the television show, The Waltons, one of the Walton boys got married to his 17-year-old bride in Elkton.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">About two years ago, Elkton\u2019s \u201cspecial\u201d status surfaced again with the opening of the Elkton Music Hall (107 North Street,\u00a0Elkton, Maryland, <i><a id=\"OWA1681f070-bfb9-e023-cadc-ed7976f5e651\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"http:\/\/www.elktonmusichall.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elktonmusichall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.elktonmusichall.com<\/a><\/i>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Elkton Music Hall is a 300-plus capacity venue that hosts national and local musical artists. It also offers private events and is part of the Elkton Arts and Entertainment District.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The venue presents music acts from a variety of genres \u2013 from local bands to tribute shows to nation acts ranging from Low Cut Connie (coming March 20) and Kathleen Edwards (April 2) to Kathy Mattea (February 25), the Outlaws (March 4) and actor\/singer Jeff Daniels (April 4).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This weekend, there will be a \u201cspecial\u201d event at the Elkton Music Hall \u2013 the area debut by the legendary New York band, the Slambovian Circus of Dreams.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovian Circus of Dreams will headline the Elkton Music Hall on February 22.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovian Circus of Dreams, which has been making music since 1998, features a trio of founding members Joziah Longo (singer, songwriter, guitarist, leader of the band), his wife Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, flute, ukulele, theremin, keyboards) and Sharkey McEwen (guitar,\u00a0mandolin, backing vocals).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The current line-up also features RJ McCarty (keys, sax, banjo, backing vocals), Bob Torsello (bass), and Matthew Abourezk (drums).<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Traditional shows for the band include the \u201cSlambovian Circus of Dreams Halloween Show,\u201d the \u201cFairport\u2019s Copredy Convention,\u201d \u201cKingston Earth Fair,\u201d and two December Slambovian Circus of Dreams traditions &#8212; Christmas and New Years concerts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band just finished a five-state December run of \u201cA Very Slambovian Christmas\u201d shows which finished with a show last week in Newtown (Bucks County).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis is our first time to play in that area so we\u2019re really looking forward to it,\u201d said Lloyd, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from upstate New York where she and Longo reside.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band\u2019s trip south from the Hudson Valley also includes shows on February 21 at Avalon in Easton, Maryland, and a show on February 23 at Havana in New Hope.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe took off January to record,\u201d said Longo. \u201cI\u2019m always writing. I\u2019m much more prolific writer than recorder.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Lloyd said, \u201cWe completely rewired. Now, we\u2019re picking songs for the next album. Some are already done.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Unfortunately, they didn\u2019t spend as much time on recording during January as they would have liked.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe got tied up with Garth\u2019s funeral,\u201d said Longo, referring to Garth Hudson, one of the founding members of The Band who passed away on January 21.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe spent a lot of unexpected time in Woodstock. We were there for about a week.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe only knew Garth from him showing up at our shows. He was showing up to see us play before people even knew us.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Hudson was one of Dylan\u2019s main musicians for years. The Slambovian Circus of Dreams has its own connection to Dylan.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovians have been described as, \u201cExploring the depths of Americana one trippy tune at a time, influences and elements of Dylan, Bowie, The Band, Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett and The Waterboys flavor the musical mix.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovian Circus has released more than a dozen albums. Right in the middle was \u201cThe Circus Does Dylan\u201d, an album released in June 2010\u00a0featuring 12 Dylan tracks recorded live between 2005 and 2009.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis show is flavored with Dylan and Garth,\u201d said Lloyd, referring to Saturday\u2019s show in Elkton.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to do some Dylan songs. Songs from the four-year period in the Dylan movie are the only ones we do. We\u2019ll be doing some songs from our back catalogue, some from the 25th\u00a0anniversary album and some new songs.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Wisely, the Circus is not railing against the current political situation in America.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cDon\u2019t pick a side \u2013 pick a future <i>together<\/i>,\u201d said Longo.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Lloyd said, \u201cWe\u2019re hiding out from politics completely. We\u2019re getting organized for a cosmic spring in Slambovia \u2013 a spring where we\u2019ll bring a hopeful spirit to people.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Longo is a Philly native who went to St. John Neumann High which back then was called Bishop Neumann High. Both the school and Longo\u2019s childhood home are located in South Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovian Circus of Dreams has endeared itself to area fans with its annual New Year\u2019s Eve Eve show at the World Caf\u00e9 Live in Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cOur New Year\u2019s Eve Eve show is always a big tradition for Joziah,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cHis childhood babysitter comes to the show. His family comes to the show. His friends from kindergarten come to the show. They all come to the show to connect with everybody.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">According to Longo, \u201cI\u2019m a South Philly boy and all my South Philly people bring umbrellas and dance like jellyfish. Coming back to Philly means a lot to me because it\u2019s the place where I was born. It\u2019s a great way to end the year. We\u2019re all trying to find our best self.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band has another feature that dates back more than a decade-and-a-half.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing summer shows in the U.K. since 2008,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cWe\u2019ve gone over every year except 2020 and 2021 because of COVID.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 2023, the\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams played the Fairport Convention\u2019s Copredy Convention\u00a0in Banbury and was named the \u201cfans\u2019 favorites.\u201d They also played the Wickham Festival in Wickham with the Waterboys headlining.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cOur first time to play in the U.K. was the Rhythm Festival,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cIt was a classic rock festival with acts like the Animals and the Zombies. Jim Driver, who is involved with the Glastonbury Music Festival, asked us to play at the festival.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Rhythm Festival, which was last held in 2011,\u00a0was an outdoor\u00a0music festival\u00a0held in\u00a0Bedfordshire. From 2006 until 2010 it was held at\u00a0Twinwood Arena, near the village of\u00a0Clapham. In 2008, it was held from August 29-31.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Performers included\u00a0Jefferson Starship,\u00a0Saw Doctors,\u00a0Richie Havens,\u00a0Michelle Shocked,\u00a0Big Star,\u00a0Steve Cropper,\u00a0Quicksilver Messenger Service,\u00a0The Zombies,\u00a0Chas and Dave,\u00a0Jah Wobble,\u00a0The Pretty Things,\u00a0Nine Below Zero, The Foxes,\u00a0Neville Staple\u00a0and\u00a0Gandalf Murphy and the\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThey had us as the opening act for the festival,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cAnd they also had us play as the closing act. People just freaked out over us. It was pretty crazy.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This year, the\u00a0Slambovian Circus headed back across the pond for a series of shows, including a pair of festivals &#8212; Devizes Arts Festival in Devizes and First Light Festival in Lowestoft. They also played shows in Pocklington, Saltaire, Milton Keynes, Cardiff, Chelmsford and London.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The big news in 2024 was the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the band\u2019s debut album, \u201cA Good Thief Tips His Hat.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The album was initially released in 1999 and then re-released in 2021 after the band got control of its catalogue.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album was never released in the U.K. and is now being released by a British label,\u201d said Longo. \u201cWe\u2019ve been playing songs from that album. Learning to play songs from a 25-year-old album was like learning new stuff.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Longo has been extremely busy at his home along the Hudson.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019m working on three musicals and four new albums,\u201d said Longo. \u201cI\u2019ve been writing a lot.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe musicals are moving along \u2013 starting to happen. The whole skeleton is coming together. I\u2019ve been reading books about scriptwriting. It\u2019s really about articulation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe albums are written and arranged. Matthew and I have been laying down tracks for one of them.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA Very Unusual Head,\u201d which\u00a0is the band\u2019s sixth studio album, was released January 21, 2022, on their new label, Storm King Records.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA Very Unusual Head\u201d was recorded over four years in five studios and two countries. The album is a step away from the\u00a0guitar-based Americana vibe heard on their previous albums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA Very Unusual Head\u201d is a real\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0tribal project with contributions from many friends and a few \u201cspecial guests\u201d such as Dar Williams,\u00a0Anthony Thistlethwaite (The Waterboys),\u00a0Kolson Pickard (Tall Heights, Pico Romanesque), drummer\u00a0Felipe Torres\u00a0(protege of Carmine Appice and sideman for Davey Jones), drummer\u00a0Matt Abourezk\u00a0(Thin White Rope) and Tristan Tadin\u00a0(keyboards).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Canadian engineer\u00a0Dio Tadin\u00a0(Tristan\u2019s father) recorded the bulk of the album on a former reindeer farm near Peterborough, Ontario and at Big Blue in Cornwall, New York. Tadin\u2019s resume includes work at Daniel Lanois\u2019 studio in Hamilton, Ontario.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe recorded two-thirds of the album in 2018,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cWe got half of it mixed and then COVID hit. We released \u2018Beez\u2019 as a single and made an EP that was only sold at our U.K. tour.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThen, we pulled together all the tracks recorded over the last five years. We did a lot of work with Dio Tadin in Peterborough, Ontario. Then, the Tadins moved their studio (Big Blue) to Cornwall, New York \u2013 which is near us. We finished making the album there.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Inspired by the Surrealists and early British Psychedelia and the paths they pioneered, the songs on the album deal with topics ranging from the pseudo-scientific to the pseudo-religious realms and other forms of hob-nobbery for fun and profit.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The diverse album has a song about Steven Hawking (\u201cForce of Nature\u201d), the planets (\u201cPluto\u201d) and an inspirational song about the importance of bees in the ecosystem (\u201cBeez (I Know Where the Beez Have Gone\u201d).\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">As always, the\u00a0Slambovians\u2019 songs feature great instrumentals accompanied by lyrics that are intelligent, socially aware, witty and mindful. Longo is a modern-day troubadour bringing a message to the people of 2025.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The new album displays many of the band\u2019s influences \u2014 Beatles, Bowie, Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett, Brahms and The Waterboys\u2026along with a good measure of Woodstock-era psychedelia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Fans at the Elkton Music Hall will have the opportunity to experience\u00a0the Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams at a local venue.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWith Maryland, we never really get to that area,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cPeople will get to hear something new.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovians will also play on February 23 at 5 p.m. at Havana (105 South Main St. New Hope, <a id=\"OWA8a6ab271-7977-6cf9-c2f1-8c9f1b63294d\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.havananewhope.com\/\">www.havananewhope.com<\/a>). Dufour has been replaced by S\u00e9bastien Deshaies.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Described by the CBC as the hottest guitar ensemble in Canada, Montreal Guitar Trio has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with, as well as an interactive force in various musical forms.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">For more than 25 years, the trio\u2019s virtuosity and creativity and impressive stage presence have been winning over audiences around the world.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe started in 1998 \u2013 27 years now,\u201d said Morin, during a phone interview Wednesday from his home in Montreal.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cS\u00e9bastien (Dufour), Glenn and I met in Montreal at the University of Montreal.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe started as a trio after college. We began playing metal and rock and then went to study classical. What brought us together was the love of many kinds of music and blending them together. We were raised in rock and studied classical. We had eclectic tastes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI initially called Glenn about my project. Then, Glenn proposed S\u00e9bastien as the third member. The project was playing the music of (Argentinian composer) Astor Piazzolla, (Brazilian composer) Egberto Gismonti and (Italian composer) Ennio Morricone.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">MG3 has performed hundreds of concerts throughout North America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia in the most prestigious venues including the legendary Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Rundet\u00e5rnet in Copenhagen and the BB King Blues Club in New York.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Winner of the 2011 Opus Award for \u201cConcert of the Year\u201d in the Jazz &amp; World Music category, Montreal Guitare Trio has<br \/>\nreleased eight albums, including the trio\u2019s two latest ones \u2013 \u201cDanzas\u201d (2017) &amp; \u201cDer Prinz\u201d (2014).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Throughout the years, the trio has collaborated and shared the stage with world-renowned ensembles and artists, such as the Orchestre Symphonique de Qu\u00e9bec, Jorane, Solorazaf and Don Ross.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMorricone is like our mentor,\u201d said Morin. \u201cWe always play Morricone. It was already a classical crossover. These composers were classical but not really in the classical world.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Ennio Morricone was an Italian composer, orchestrator, conductor, trumpeter, and pianist who wrote music in a wide range of styles.
