Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jameyshouseofmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.jameyshouseofmusic.com<\/a>) has had a jazz-based show every Thursday called \u201cJazz at Jamey\u2019s.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cStarting January 1, we switched from \u2018Jazz Jams\u2019 to a monthly series with four or five themed shows each Thursday,\u201d said Jamie Reilly, owner and manager of Jamey\u2019s House of Music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This month\u2019s \u201cThird Thursday\u201d falls on March 20 and that means it\u2019s Lisa Chavous\u2019 turn.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI have my own show one night a month \u2013 every Thursday,\u201d said Chavous, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon from her home in Delaware County.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis month is Women\u2019s History Month so this will be a special show.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Women\u2019s History Month is a celebration of women\u2019s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA couple months ago, I thought about it after a jazz performance \u2013 that I\u2019d do a special show as a tribute to Women\u2019s History Month,\u201d said Chavous.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chavous is one of the most respected jazz, rock and blues singers in the Philadelphia music scene.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been playing a lot in the tri-state area,\u201d said Chavous. \u201cMy music covers a lot of genres including Motown, jazz, blues, funk, hip-hop, soul \u2013 mostly soul.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019m calling my show this week \u2018Ladies Rock the Blues.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt will be a tribute to great women artists including Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Koko Taylor, Ruth Brown, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Tina Turner.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ll also be doing covers of other great blues artists such as Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley. And I\u2019ve puy together a groip of women to play this music.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The line-up of acts that Chavous has assembled for this week\u2019s show includes Val Ray, Lynn Riley, Sister Blue and Deb Callahan.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cLynn Riley is a great sax player,\u201d said Chavous. \u201cShe\u2019s a really good jazz player from the Tri-State area. I\u2019ve hired her many times. Val Ray is a singer and production manager from this area.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cNanette Blue, who is also known as Sister Blue, is from Montgomery County. She\u2019s a singer, guitar player and drummer but she\u2019ll just be singing and playing guitar at the show.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cDeb Callahan has one of the best blues bands in the Tri-State area. This will be the first time I\u2019ve played together with her. We\u2019ve crossed paths a lot but never talked. We\u2019ll be playing some of her originals.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Callahan has been playing the blues at area venues for more than two decades.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019m from the Boston area and I\u2019ve been in Philly for over 20 years,\u201d said\u00a0Callahan. \u201cI moved here to go to grad school at Penn.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After graduation from the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s School of Social Work,\u00a0Callahan\u00a0stayed in the area and still works as a social worker in the city.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI got a master\u2019s degree in social work,\u201d said\u00a0Callahan. \u201cI do youth counseling. My music is definitely influenced by my work as a social worker.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Callahan\u2019s debut LP was \u201cIf Blues Had Wings\u201d and she followed with \u201cThe Blue Pearl\u201d in 2005, \u201cGrace and Grit\u201d in 2008 and \u201cTell It Like It Is\u2019 in 2010. Her most recent album, which was released in 2023, is \u201cBackbone.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chavous will be backed by her powerhouse band.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI have my regular rhythm section \u2013 Charles Beasley on bass and Tony Day on drums and percussion,\u201d said Chavous. \u201cI\u2019ll also have Richard Budesa on Hammond (a Hammond B3 organ).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chavous\u00a0is a Delaware County girl all the way.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">She grew up in Sharon Hill and graduated from Darby Township High School. She studied for a career in nursing at a hospital in Delaware County. Now,\u00a0Chavous\u00a0is a resident of Lansdowne and could easily walk to Friday\u2019s gig if she so desires.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chavous\u00a0is making a return visit to Jamey\u2019s House of Music \u2013 the venue where she had a CD release party for her most recent album, \u201cBreaking Down the Walls.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe CD is dedicated to my late husband Michael Hayes,\u201d said\u00a0Chavous, during a phone interview from her Delco home. \u201cHe died of cancer in 2014.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chavous\u00a0has been singing her whole life.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI started performing and singing in church when I was really young,\u201d said\u00a0Chavous. \u201cThe, my mom and dad managed me. Eventually, I got calls from agents. So, I started putting bands together \u2013 Lisa\u00a0Chavous\u00a0and Friends.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy first band was a jazz band. We played a lot of jazz clubs including the Blue Note in New York. I was on the jazz side for a while. We were really blessed with being able to book shows at country clubs in Delco.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chavous\u00a0is frequently compared to Tina Turner, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown, and Irma Thomas, who along with Billie Holiday and Mahalia Jackson are among her primary musical influences.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chavous\u00a0has performed with jazz greats Byard Lancaster, Odean Pope, Trudy Pitts, Pat Martino, Jimmy McGriff and Bootsie Barnes, and is regularly backed by former members of Patti LaBelle\u2019s band, as well as by Don Evans, former guitarist for Billy Joel.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chavous is getting closer to releasing a new album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been back in the studio finishing my fifth CD,\u201d said Chavous.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI have some great music we\u2019ve written over the last few years. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3N0iG_x7u44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/3N0iG_x7u44<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show at Jamey\u2019s on Thursday will start at 8 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20419\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20419\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20419\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ken-clark-2-350x253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"253\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ken Clark<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fans of the distinctive sound of the Hammond B3 are being offered a double treat at Jamey\u2019s this week.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In addition to Richard Budesa\u2019s performance in Chavous\u2019 band on Thursday, there will be a lot of Hammond B3 music emanating from the stage on March 23 when Jamey\u2019s presents Firecracker.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Firecracker is a new project based in Boston that features Ken Clark on the Hammond B3 organ and Jared Sims on the baritone sax.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The music celebrates the vintage funky organ sound popularized by greats such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Groove Holmes, Lou Donaldson, and Wes Montgomery.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">While the band pays homage to the great artists&#8217; styles before them, they also play originals and arrangements that show off their unique individual voices.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve played with the sax player for 10 years in different bands,\u201d said Clark, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Boston.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis is the first time we\u2019ve worked as our own band. I also have my own group \u2013 Ken Clark Organ Trio \u2013 and we\u2019ve released six CDs. I\u2019ve also toured with Michelle Wilson and done session work with One Dime Band.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Ken Clark Organ Trio have been performing around New England and the eastern U.S. for the past 15 years. Guitarist Mike Mele, drummer Steve Chaggaris and Clark play shuffle boogaloo, build dynamic climaxes and sprinkle in jazz solos.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Clark is a Boston native who also has called Manchester, New Hampshire home.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI spent two years studying at Berklee (College of Music) in Boston,\u201d said Clark. \u201cThen, I spent another two years studying with Charles Banacos (the late distinguished music educationalist Charles Banacos.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Clark\u2019s most recognizable gig came with a New York band \u2013 the Blues Project.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI used to play with Melvin Sparks, Bernard Purdie and David \u201cFathead\u201d Newman,\u201d said Clark. \u201cThen, I joined the Blues Project. I replaced Al Kooper in the Blues Project.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Jared Sims is a musician and recording artist specializing in saxophone, woodwinds, jazz and funk music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Sims, who has played music on four continents, has multiple solo albums and guest appearances on more than 60 albums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He performs regularly under his own name and with several other groups.
