{"id":36845,"date":"2025-05-29T09:20:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T13:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=36845"},"modified":"2025-05-29T09:20:45","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T13:20:45","slug":"on-stage-nellie-mckay-celebrates-new-album-release-in-elkton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=36845","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Nellie McKay celebrates new album release in Elkton"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20593\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20593\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20593\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Nellie-McKay-credit-Shervin-Lainez-600x621-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nellie McKay<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the next few days, there will be shows in the area featuring acts that have been around for a long time \u2013 Nellie McKay, the Philadelphia Ballet and the Fractals.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay, who is performing on May 29 at the Elkton Music Hall (107 North Street, Elkton, Maryland, <a id=\"OWA3204cba9-ed90-620b-e730-d1df95d02fea\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elktonmusichall.com\/\">www.elktonmusichall.com<\/a>) and May 31 at the Sellersville Theater (24 West Temple Avenue, Sellersville, 215-257-5808, <a id=\"OWAa4010783-2184-949b-5d46-e047c9a5f3af\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.st94.com\/\">www.st94.com<\/a>), is a singer\/songwriter\/multi-instrumentalist who began her career as an entertainer singing in New York clubs in the late 1900s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Currently, she is playing all the songs from her recently released album, \u201cGee Whiz: The Get Away From Me Demos,\u201d an 18-track collection of previously unissued and self-produced demos on two LPs presaging McKay\u2019s critically acclaimed debut album, out now on Omnivore Recordings.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album is out on vinyl for the first time,\u201d said McKay, during a phone interview Tuesday night from her home in the Poconos.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s a double album on vinyl and is also being released on CD with three bonus tracks.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cGee Whiz: The Get Away From Me Demos\u201d collects McKay\u2019s recordings which became that landmark album (\u201cGet Away From Me\u201d), composed, performed, and produced by Nellie, and sequenced identically to the original record.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">As a bonus, the CD and digital programs also contain three very early, previously unissued tracks.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Mastered by multiple Grammy-winner Michael Graves, these revelatory demos show how complete the album was in its initial stages and brings new insight on the creative process from one of music\u2019s most creative artists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe had the demos of all these songs so why not celebrate the 21st\u00a0anniversary of the original release,\u201d said McKay. \u201c<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe three bonus tracks are little homemade things that I made,\u201d said McKay. \u201cI recorded them at the time I was playing piano bars.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s nice that we got in touch with Omnivore. They also re-released \u2018Hey Guys Watch This,\u2019 (McKay\u2019s most recent previous album).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album of demos was remixed in L.A. by Grammy Award winner Michael Graves. He made it sound great.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u2019s debut album, \u201cGet Away From Me,\u201d was released on Columbia Records in 2004. She first played shows in this area back in 2004 to accompany the release of that album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When she was getting started,\u00a0McKay made music that bridged the gap between jazz and hip-hop \u2014 a combination not often heard in today\u2019s pop music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The versatile performer\u00a0was born in London and raised in New York, the Pacific Northwest and Pennsylvania\u2019s Pocono Manor. When she was still in her teens, she was living in her own apartment in New York \u2014 at the edge of Harlem at 123rd and Amsterdam.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI love New York,\u201d said McKay. \u201cI lived in Harlem. When people hear Harlem, they think it\u2019s a dangerous place but it\u2019s not bad.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay, who attended school at Pocono Mountain Junior and Senior High, learned to play a variety of instruments including piano, cello, timpani, vibes, triangle and saxophone. Her main concentration has always been on keyboards.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI played with the East Stroudsburg University Jazz Ensemble when I was still in high school,\u201d said\u00a0McKay. \u201cPatrick Dorian, a music professor at ESU, gave me my first formal jazz training. He taught me a lot about composition.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Eventually,\u00a0McKay\u00a0began playing gigs at New York piano bars such as Don\u2019t Tell Mama\u2019s, Stonewall Bistro, Psychic Cafe, Regents, Rose\u2019s Turn, and Mozart Caf\u00e9 (where she was canned because she liked to play Christmas songs in August when people weren\u2019t sick of them). A record deal with Columbia followed and the rest is history.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0treats fans to live renditions of classic songs that are commonly referred to as standards. Her set list might also feature a Beatles song or even the Frank Zappa classic tune, \u201cHungry Freaks Daddy.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Unlike most of many of her previous albums, \u201cHey Guys, Watch This,\u201d featured McKay\u00a0as a composer instead of song stylist.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis is my first album of all original songs in 15 years,\u201d said\u00a0McKay. \u201cThe oldest song is from 15 years ago \u2013 \u2018did I catch you dreaming.\u2019\u00a0 It was inspired by my dog who was sleeping.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The most recent one is \u2018badumbump.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThere are 15 songs on the album. I had a lot of songs, and I chose these 15 because I was running out of time.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0recorded the album in several locations \u2013 mainly in the hills of the Mountaineer State.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Recorded in Charleston, West Virginia with The Carpenter Ants and a roving retinue of musical compadres, \u201cHey Guys, Watch This\u201d traces the haunted sounds of Appalachia to a renaissance of revelry.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0released an EP titled, \u201cBagatelles,\u201d in 2019. The album before that was \u201cSister Orchid\u201d in 2018.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSister Orchid\u201d includes timeless gems such as \u201cWillow Weep for Me,\u201d which was first recorded in 1932 by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and later was a hit for Billie Holiday in the mid-1950s; \u201cGeorgia on My Mind,\u201d a Hoagy Carmichael song from 1930 that was a hit for Ray Charles in 1960; and \u201cIn a Sentimental Mood,\u201d which was penned and performed by Duke Ellington in 1935.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On\u00a0McKay\u2019s website, \u201cSister Orchid,\u201d which was released May 2018 on Palmetto Records, had this description \u2013 \u201cConjuring the image of a lonely all-night truck stop along Highway 1 on the California coast, all but lost in the fog that comes creeping along the shoreline\u2026\u00a0this album speaks of the night, the outsider, the plaintive wail of those lost at sea.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201c\u2018Sister Orchid\u2019\u00a0was conceived in solitude,\u00a0executed in darkness. It\u00a0comes from a place of quiet, a world of low lights and cool drinks, up against a hard wall.\u00a0An oasis of hungry eyes and easy promises, warm as a biscuit, the kind of place your mother warned you against.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSister Orchid\u201d\u00a0was\u00a0McKay\u2019s seventh label release. Her previous albums include\u00a0\u201cObligatory Villagers,\u201d \u201cNormal as Blueberry\u00a0Pie,\u201d \u201cHome<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Sweet Mobile Home\u201d and \u201cMy Weekly Reader.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0is like a modern-day \u201cRenaissance Woman.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On Broadway, she\u00a0won a Theatre\u00a0World\u00a0Award for her portrayal of Polly Peachum in\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0Threepenny\u00a0Opera.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">She also\u00a0co-created and starred in the award-winning Off-Broadway hit\u00a0\u201cOld Hats,\u201d\u00a0and has\u00a0written and produced musical biographies around a compelling gallery of ladies\u00a0\u2013 from\u00a0environmental pioneer\u00a0Rachel Carson to the life,\u00a0conviction, and execution at San Quentin\u00a0of\u00a0underdog\u00a0Barbara Graham.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Other projects included \u201cThe Big Molinsky \u2013 Considering Joan Rivers,\u201d and \u201cA GIRL NAMED BILL \u2013 The Life and Times of Billy Tipton,\u201d which was named one of the \u201cBest Concerts of the Year\u201d by\u00a0The New York Times.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u2019s screen work includes roles\u00a0in\u00a0\u201cPS I Love You\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cDowntown Express.\u201d She contributed movie\u00a0music to\u00a0\u201cRumor Has It,\u201d \u201cMonster-in-Law,\u201d \u201cGasland,\u201d \u201cLast Holiday,\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cPrivate Life.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In the television world, her music has been heard on\u00a0\u201cMad Men,\u201d \u201cBoardwalk Empire,\u201d \u201cWeeds,\u201d \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy,\u201d \u201cNCIS,\u201d \u201cNurse Jackie,\u201d and\u00a0\u201cSMILF.\u201d Additionally,\u00a0McKay\u2019s writing has appeared in\u00a0The Onion,\u00a0Interview, and\u00a0The New York Times Book Review.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0also has devoted much of her life to projects combating animal abuse.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">She is a recipient of PETA\u2019s\u00a0Humanitarian Award and The Humane Society\u2019s Doris Day Music Award\u00a0in recognition of her dedication to animal rights.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been a vegetarian since I was eight,\u201d said\u00a0McKay. \u201cI\u2019ve been vegan since 2004. Non-violence begins on your plate.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With her shows this summer, McKay is showing that \u201cold\u201d can be \u201cnew\u201d again.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to be playing the whole \u2018Gee Whiz\u2019 album in the shows this summer,\u201d said McKay. \u201cWe\u2019re playing them in the same order as on the album \u2013 and we\u2019ll have visual accompaniment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re doing it just for this tour. I thought \u2013 why not have some fun with this show. Founded in 1963, the Pennsylvania Ballet rebranded to Philadelphia Ballet in 2021.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This weekend, the Philadelphia Ballet\u2019s Sixth Annual Spring Festival (<a href=\"http:\/\/philadelphiaballet.org\/\">philadelphiaballet.org<\/a>) will be held at Red Rose Farm, Board Chairman David F. Hoffman\u2019s beautiful property in Villanova.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Festival, which will take place on May 29 and 31, features outdoor performances by Philadelphia Ballet and School of Philadelphia Ballet.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The event will be hosted over two evenings.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The first will be the Benefit Event on May 29 featuring a cocktail reception, the presentation of the Anthony Haller Volunteer of the Year Award, and performances featuring Philadelphia Ballet and School of Philadelphia Ballet, followed by a dinner with the artists in the poolside garden.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">All funds raised from the Festival support the Ballet\u2019s work on stage and in the community.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On Saturday, May 31, at the Picnic Event, guests are encouraged to bring friends, their own picnic, favorite wine, and a blanket to enjoy an evening of outdoor performances on the lawn. It will also feature performances by Philadelphia Ballet and School of Philadelphia Ballet.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">For Philadelphia Ballet Artistic Director Angel Correa, a native of Barcelona (Spain), a key factor will be \u201csi el tiempo lo permite,\u201d which is Spanish for \u201cweather permitting.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Both events feature outdoor performances so the forecast of rainy weather for the next few days is worrisome.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to deal with the weather,\u201d said Correa, during a phone interview Wednesday night from Philadelphia. \u201cThe whole weekend looks like rain.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe venue \u2013 David Hoffman\u2019s house \u2013 is beautiful. It\u2019s a great place for outdoor performances.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">It will be a wonderful place for the shows \u2013 if the rain holds off. Rain dates are May 30 for the May 29 event and June 1 for the May 31 event.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The 2025 Red Rose Farm performance will feature new works commissioned by\u00a0Corella from three Philadelphia Ballet artists &#8212;\u00a0Charles Askegard,\u00a0Zecheng Liang, and\u00a0Russell Ducker.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The program will also feature a special performance by School of Philadelphia Ballet.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cCharles Askegard is our rehearsal director,\u201d said Correa. \u201cIt\u2019s a classical piece by John Francois called \u2018Concrete Francois.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt has nine dancers. It\u2019s very energetic \u2013 very fast. It uses a lot of Balanchine style.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cZecheng Liang\u2019s piece is \u2018The Meeting Point.\u2019 It\u2019s set to music by Florian Christaller and has eight dancers. It\u2019s a little more modern \u2013 and very fluid.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cRussell Ducker\u2019s piece is \u2018Les Spectres de la Rosa\u2019 \u2013 the spectacle of the rose. The original music was by Carl Maria von Weber.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe piece has four men and one woman. It\u2019s very explosive \u2013 especially for the men.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The School of Philadelphia Ballet will also perform several numbers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThere are three other pieces,\u201d said Correa. \u201c\u2018After the Rain is very peaceful &#8212; the feeling after a storm. It\u2019s set to music by Christopher Wheeldon. It\u2019s almost ethereal.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201c<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The other two are Balanchine pieces. \u2018Tarantella\u2019 is a pas de deux that is really fun \u2013 a lot of jumping and hitting the tamburello.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe other is from \u2018Swan Lake.\u2019 It was never meant to be in the full-length so Balanchine took it and created a pas de deux. It\u2019s really fast \u2013 really energetic.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Benefit Event on May 29 will start at 5 p.m. with a Cocktail Reception followed by a performance at 6:30 p.m. The Picnic Event on May 31 will start at 6:30 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Fractals, who will have their release party for their new EP, \u201cRescue,\u201d on May 30, are a Philadelphia-based band that has been around since 1993.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The party\/concert will take place at 118 North (118 North Wayne Avenue, Wayne, <a id=\"OWAe5caf95d-4981-bf38-a160-58158021d6ae\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.118northwayne.com\/\">www.118northwayne.com<\/a>) on Friday night at 9 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The line-up of the Fractals band includes\u00a0Kevin Hanson, Jim Stager, Erik Johnson and\u00a0Mike Frank.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Hanson, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, has recorded and performed with Usher, Jay-Z, The Roots, Musiq Soulchild, and more. He appears in the films\u00a0Fade To Black\u00a0and Dave Chappelle&#8217;s\u00a0Block Party.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Stager, bassist, has performed or recorded with artists ranging from Cab Calloway to the punk band X. His mastery of rock and jazz has earned him a place among Philadelphia&#8217;s elite players.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Johnson, drummer, has worked across styles with George Garzone, Kurt Elling, Susan Werner, and many others. He now drums for many of the East Coast\u2019s premier singer-songwriters.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Frank, keyboardist and Theremin enthusiast, is a staple in Philadelphia\u2019s jazz community, known for his sensitivity as an accompanist and his musical genius.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band hasn\u2019t always been the Fractals. From 1992 through the early 2000s, they were known as Huffamoose.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cHuffamoose was together from 1993 until 2001,\u201d said Hanson, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Germantown.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThen, our lead singer Craig Elkins moved to L.A. Erik, Jim and I decided to keep going. We were the Kevin Hanson Trio starting in 2001. We changed to the Fractals in 2006 because we wanted a band identity.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The history of\u00a0The\u00a0Fractals\u00a0as a band spans a timeline of over thirty years, from their start in a Mexican restaurant, to the main stage at Woodstock \u201894, under the name\u00a0Huffamoose, to the current incarnation of\u00a0The\u00a0Fractals, their most potent configuration to date.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After performing on the main stage at Woodstock \u201894,\u00a0Huffamoose\u00a0signed with Interscope Records, toured extensively while charting on Billboard\u2019s Alternative Rock chart, played on\u00a0Late Night With Conan O\u2019Brien, and cultivated a reputation as a band of unusual skill and creativity.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Three of the four\u00a0Fractals\u00a0(Jim Stager,\u00a0Kevin Hanson, and\u00a0Erik Johnson) were original members of\u00a0Huffamoose, and their keyboard master, Mike Frank, was a guest artist on their Interscope debut.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIn addition to the Kevin Hanson Trio, I had been doing other rock gigs and jazz gigs,\u201d said Hanson. \u201cI wanted to keep it separate from the band.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe first recording we did as the Fractals was the \u2018Lucky Red Shoes\u2019 EP in 2006. Then, we did the \u2018Heavy Rotation\u2019 LP in 2010 and the \u2018Sakes Alive\u2019 EP in 2013.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe also released a few singles along the way and now we have \u2018Rescue.\u2019 I\u2019ve written all the band\u2019s songs so far. I\u2019ll bring in a batch of songs and then we\u2019ll work on them as a band.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWith Mike in the band, it gives me more possibilities to write in the studio. We\u2019re focusing on more harmonies \u2013 Beach Boy-like harmonies.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Fractals had an EP in 2006, an album four years later and then another EP three years after that \u2013 \u201cSakes Alive\u201d in 2013. It took the band a dozen years to issue a new record.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt was a long time,\u201d said Hanson. \u201cI had two daughters in the interim. And all of us work a lot. I teach music theory and history of music at several universities \u2013 Temple, Rowan and Swarthmore.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe last three years, we\u2019ve been in the studio with our engineer John Anthony. We\u2019ve done a lot of songs. We have a lot of new material \u2013 enough to fill another album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been recording at Gradwell House in Haddon Heights, New Jersey. The mixes for \u2018Rescue\u2019 were done when we finished each individual song.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Fans will get to hear the new tunes live this Friday.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be playing the entire EP,\u201d said Hanson. \u201cWe have 15 songs on our set list.
