{"id":36988,"date":"2025-07-10T08:17:30","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=36988"},"modified":"2025-07-10T08:17:31","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:17:31","slug":"on-stage-peoples-light-offers-a-new-take-on-little-shop-of-horrors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=36988","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: People&#8217;s Light offers a new take on &#8216;Little Shop of Horrors&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff,<\/strong> <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20700\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20700\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20700\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/513673620_1132547108913541_4392843867590372289_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Little Shop of Horrors<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gold is always good \u2013 as long as you\u2019re not talking about bibles, sneakers or cologne.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">People\u2019s Light (39 Conestoga Road, Malvern, <a id=\"OWA1f14d248-7052-ffe9-58f8-a7431d31a103\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleslight.org\/\">www.peopleslight.org<\/a>) has been celebrating its Golden Anniversary season for the last 10 months.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The theater, which has been a cherished Chester County attraction for 50 years, is closing its landmark season with a heavy hitter \u2013 the cult musical \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show was a smash hit both as a Broadway production and a movie.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d\u00a0is a\u00a0horror comedy <a id=\"OWAccecabe0-045e-7eef-28e9-8efe51fc5849\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Rock musical\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_musical\">rock musical <\/a>featuring music by\u00a0Alan Menken\u00a0and lyrics and a book by\u00a0Howard Ashman. It tells the story of a hapless florist shop worker who grows a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The musical, which traces its roots to a low-budget 1960\u00a0black comedy\u00a0film, \u201cThe Little Shop of Horrors,\u201d premiered\u00a0off-off-Broadway\u00a0in 1982 before moving to the\u00a0Orpheum Theatre <a id=\"OWA594bfed9-d431-de16-46c8-4199419fccb0\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Off-Broadway\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Off-Broadway\">off-Broadway<\/a>, where it had a five-year run. It later became a\u00a0Broadway\u00a0production.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">An owner of a florist shop on Skid Row, Gravis Mushnick has two employees &#8212; Audrey and Seymour. When Seymour fouls up a floral arrangement for a dentist customer, Mushnick fires him.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Hoping to change his boss\u2019 mind, Seymour talks about a plant he has grown from seeds that he got over on Central Avenue. Seymour has also unwittingly cultivated a singing botanical menace. To the delight of Audrey, he names the plant \u201cAudrey II.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Mushnick is unimpressed and gives Seymour one week to revive the plant. The usual plant food does not nourish it, but when Seymour accidentally pricks his finger, he discovers that the plant craves blood.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Fed on Seymour\u2019s blood, Audrey II begins to grow. Audrey II continues to grow and that means more blood. The plot continues to get darker from that point.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The celebratory \u201c50 Years of People\u2019s Light,\u201d has Zak Berkman as Producing Artistic Director and Shonali Burke as Managing Director. \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d is directed by Molly Rosa Houlahan.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors,\u201d Berkman has not tried to compete with ever-popular movie or the stage production (which is a favorite of high school drama teachers).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA lot of folks love musicals but at the beginning, musicals were not our thing,\u201d said Berkman, a graduate of Oberlin College. \u201cI took this position in 2022, and we got a new artistic team that loved musicals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWith this show, we\u2019re asking some deep important questions \u2013 such as what sacrifices are we willing to make to achieve what we want in this world &#8212; and then wrapping them in a fun, hilarious way.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMolly (Rosa Houlahan) had a really great idea for it. She knew how to make this fresh. Even if you\u2019ve seen \u2018Little Shop of Horrors\u2019 20 times, you\u2019ll want to see this.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot of Panto productions here and they have a lot of outrageousness. This show is very Panto-like. It is also outrageous.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe also wanted to focus on the degree in which gender plays into what we think we all want. By having a non-binary actor play Seymour, he plays it like a man.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When Audrey II attracts a lot of attention from the news and from customers, Seymour becomes a focus.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSeymour is not attractive until he becomes famous,\u201d said Berkman. \u201cHe becomes attractive \u2013 but he\u2019s afraid of what will happen if he is no longer famous.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe also have a female actress playing Mushnik as a man and Audrey II, who is on stage a lot, is played by a woman. Molly wanted to put the plant on stage.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Seymour is played by Anna Faye Lieberman. Mushnik is played by Mary Elizabeth Scallen and Chabrelle Williams plays Audrey II.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Berman has been with the theater in Malvern for almost a decade-and-a-half.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He has more than 30 years of experience producing theatre and developing new plays and musicals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI came to People\u2019s Light in 2011,\u201d said Berkman. \u201cI started as Associate Artistic Director and became Producing Director in 2013. I was promoted to Producing Artistic Director in 2022. I was first introduced to People\u2019s Light through Margo Lion.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Prior to People\u2019s Light, Berkman was Associate to Broadway producer Margo Lion, and the Founding Executive Director of Artistic Programming with Epic Theatre Ensemble, a multi-award winning Off-Broadway theatre company.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Highlights include\u00a0the World and U.S. Premieres of <i>Lights Out: Nat &#8220;King&#8221; Cole<\/i>\u00a0by Colman Domingo and Patricia McGregor,<i>\u00a0Mud Row <\/i>by Dominique Morisseau, <i>Project Dawn<\/i>\u00a0by Karen Hartman, <i>Barcelona<\/i>\u00a0by Bess Wohl, <i>No Child&#8230;<\/i>\u00a0by Nilaja Sun, <i>Palace of The End<\/i>\u00a0by Judith Thompson, and <i>Hannah and Martin<\/i>\u00a0by Kate Fodor, as well as the New York Premiere of Sarah Ruhl\u2019s\u00a0Passion Play\u00a0and multiple Barrymore Award winning revival of Paul Osborne&#8217;s\u00a0Morning&#8217;s At Seven.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Berkman\u00a0is a multifaceted artist &#8212; writer, composer, director, and dramaturg. His\u00a0plays include <i>The Harassment of Iris Malloy<\/i>, <i>Beauty on the Vine<\/i>,\u00a0and <i>A Breath Short of Breathing<\/i>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He was the adaptor\/composer for a new music-filled version of <i>Charles Dickens\u2019\u00a0A Christmas Carol<\/i>\u00a0that People\u2019s Light produced in 2021 and 2023, as well as the co-author\/composer of <i>Such Things As Vampires<\/i>, which received a Barrymore Award for original music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">A former soap writer for NBC\u2019s <i>Days of Our Lives<\/i>, Berkman also wrote two episodes of People\u2019s Light\u2019s Covid-era digital series <i>America 2am<\/i>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cOne of my primary roles here at People\u2019s Light is selecting plays with the artistic team \u2013 deciding which new works we\u2019re commissioning. We have three to five commissions a year.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">People\u2019s Light\u2019s 51st\u00a0season will begin with \u201cThe Unexpected 3rd,\u201d which opens on September 17 and runs through October 19.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">People\u2019s Light also has special events known as \u201cFlight Nights.\u201d The final one of the 50th season will be \u201cVegas Night\u201d on July 16.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201c\u2018Flight Nights \u2013 Vegas\u2019 has three flights of whiskey, three palates and three eight-to-10-minute mini-plays,\u201d said Berkman. \u201cAfter each mini-play, we give a question, and each table discusses the question.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cFlight Nights \u2013 Vegas\u201d will start a 7 p.m. on July 16. Tickets are $35.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The cast for \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d also includes Madeleine Garcia (Chiffon), Jessica Johnson (Crystal), Taylor J. Mitchell (Ronette), Jessica Money (Audrey), Andrew Kane (Orrin) and Connor McAndrews (Bernstein, Luce, Snip, everyone else).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d is running now through August 3. Tickets are $57 &#8212; $52 for youth.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Other special events this month at People\u2019s Light are \u201cComedy Night\u201d on July 18 and \u201cSwing Night\u201d on July 19.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Steve Forbert, a singer-songwriter whose career started almost 50 years ago, has developed a very strong area fan base over that time.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He has played a plethora of venues in the Delaware Valley \u2013 from the Main Point and Tin Angel to Ardmore Cabaret and Kennett Flash. He played the club in Kennett as recently as April this year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On July 12, Steve Forbert &amp; The New Renditions will headline a Bryn Mawr Twilight Series show at the Bryn Mawr Gazebo (9 South Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bryn Mawr, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brynmawrtwilightconcerts.com\/\">www.brynmawrtwilightconcerts.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20701\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20701\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20701\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/JyESM8tV-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve Forbert<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When Forbert returns to the Philly suburbs, he\u2019s bringing a new album with him.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Forbert released his 21st album, \u201cDaylight Savings Time,\u201d in November on Blue Rose Music. It was his fourth album in the last six years on the label.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe released the album last fall,\u201d said Forbert, during a phone interview from his home in Asbury Park, New Jersey.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe recorded the album last year here in Asbury Park. It was produced by Steve Greenwell, and we used his studio. I did the last two albums before this there.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe songs are all recent. Before it was recorded, I hadn\u2019t performed any of them live.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy current set has songs from \u2018Daylight Savings Time\u2019 and songs from previous albums. The rest is what people want to hear \u2013 songs like \u2018What Kinda Guy,\u2019 \u2018Romeo\u2019s Tune\u2019 and \u2018Going Down to Laurel.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 1984, Forbert had a disagreement with his record company Nemperor and contractual issues prevented him from recording for a number of years afterwards.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">His 1988 album,\u00a0\u201cStreets of This Town,\u201d and the 1992 follow-up,\u00a0\u201cThe American in Me,\u201d were released by\u00a0Geffen Records and both received significant airplay.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Over the next two decades, Forbert released 11 albums on seven labels before settling down with Blue Rose Music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe recorded 10 songs for the new album,\u201d said Forbert. \u201cThe last one, \u2018Dixie Miles,\u2019 I wrote as we were finishing the album.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Written as he approached his 70th\u00a0birthday, \u201cDaylight Savings Time\u201d contemplates and celebrates the proverbial \u201cextra hour of daylight\u201d that comes with the time change.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe links between the songs \u2013 a lot of nature appreciation,\u201d said Forbert.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cDaylight Savings Time is that extra hour of daylight. It\u2019s similar to late middle age.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On the album\u2019s first single, \u201cSound Existence,\u201d Forbert sings, \u201cYeah to chirping crickets and to daylight savings time! The best ain\u2019t yet to come, but you could still get by just fine.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Over the years, Forbert has been involved in political activism and that spirit is still alive.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI just finished a brand-new single called \u201cEbeneezer\u2019s Back in Town,\u2019,\u201d said Forbert.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWriting is something I do all the time. I always go on inspiration. I don\u2019t want to take a break. \u00a0It\u2019s always there. It\u2019s my job.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWhat I do is more about songs. I just do what I\u2019ve always done. Lyrics \u2014 and topics \u2014 move with me through life. LCB).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Over the past 15 years, lower case blues &#8212; Jake Banaszak (guitar), B.J. Muntz (vocals and bass), and Paul Weik (drums) &#8212; has established a loyal following\u2026especially at the shore resorts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Among LCB\u2019s many accolades is its 2009 rating of \u201cBest Band in Delaware\u201d by\u00a0Delaware Today\u00a0Magazine, its 2012 induction into the DE Blues Hall of Fame, and its placement in in the semi-finals of the 31st International Blues Challenge in Memphis.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In comparison, the Alicia Maxwell Project has been building its fanbase for just the last six years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Formed in the summer of 2019, the Alicia Maxwell Project is a four-piece band hailing from the Delmarva area.\u00a0 Since coming together, the band has performed steadily at clubs and festivals and has opened up for national acts such as Danielle Nicole Band and Popa Chubby.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI met Jake when we were teenagers at open mics,\u201d said Maxwell, during a phone interview from Delaware on Tuesday evening.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI started to meet people \u2013 other musicians \u2013 at open mics. Later, Jake would get me up onstage to sing with lower case blues. That was 20 years ago.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Alicia Maxwell Project consists of Alicia Maxwell (vocals), Joe Casamento (guitar\/vocals), Joe Geiger (bass) and Bill Dube (drums\/vocals).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIn 2019, I was with another band \u2013 Tommy Alderson Group \u2013 with Joe Geiger and Bill Dube. Joe Geiger knew Joe Casamento.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe had a practice with Joe Casamento, and it clicked. It just meshed really well. I had bands before, and they\u2019d break up. With Alicia Maxwell Project, we have a great connection.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe get along. We like to play with each other. We had our first show on September 1, 2019 at the Union Hotel in Port Deposit and we\u2019re still going.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show on July 11 at Elkton Music Hall will be doubly special for Maxwell. It will be the release party for the band\u2019s sophomore album, \u201cGet Lifted,\u201d and will also be Maxwell\u2019s birthday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt took us a while to record \u2018Get Lifted\u2019 because we have day jobs and families,\u201d said Maxwell, who graduated from Widener Law School and now works as a paralegal. \u201cWe recorded it at Mid-South Audio in Milton, Delaware.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe started before Christmas \u2013 actually the first day was in October 2024. It took us several months. It was self-produced along with Frank Marchand. He really knew his sounds.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album has nine songs \u2013 all originals. Our songwriting varies. I\u2019ll come up with a lyric or idea and take it to Joe Casamento \u2013 or Joe will send me a guitar lick. We\u2019re constantly writing.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 2022, the band released its self-titled album featuring eight original tracks.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Like many musicians, Maxwell started in music when she was young.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy grandmother played organ in church,\u201d said Maxwell, who graduated from Dickinson High School in Wilmington.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI sang in high school. I had a solo in one of the concerts at Dickinson.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When asked to describe AMP\u2019s music, Maxwell said, \u201cWe\u2019re poly-jamorous \u2013 a bluesy, funky, soulful jam band. Her music is heard worldwide, and we are so happy to offer her a regular platform to connect with her fans. Please join us!\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The project has taken off. From now on, the second Thursday of the month belongs to\u00a0Gaffney.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cJamey called me and asked me if I wanted to host and curate an Americana\/Folk\/Roots night,\u201d said\u00a0Gaffney\u00a0during a phone interview from her home on Montgomery County.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Gaffney\u00a0agreed but had something in mind more than just an evening of her playing acoustic American music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe show will be loose in format,\u201d said\u00a0Gaffney. \u201cHe (venue owner\/manager Jamey Reilly) has given me carte blanche to plan the evening. I thought it would be nice to feature some artists who are either just\u00a0getting started or don\u2019t play out solo very much.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Gaffney\u00a0is a singer\/songwriter\/guitarist who was born in Lansdale and then moved west. Now, she has returned to this area \u2013 from Pacifica, California to Schwenksville.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI have a lot of experience,\u201d said Gaffney. \u201cNow, I\u2019m devoting my life to focusing on my own music.
