(<a href=\"http:\/\/brandywiners.org\/\">brandywiners.org<\/a>) are moving into their summer home at Longwood Gardens (Route 1, Kennett Square, <a id=\"OWA73a34096-7b45-0324-4889-325a46a9d503\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.longwoodgardens.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.longwoodgardens.org<\/a>) where they will perform a four-show run of \u201cSomething Rotten.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Under the guidance of top-notch directors &#8212; Stage Director\u00a0S. Lee Lewis and Music Director Betsy Conner &#8212; \u201cSomething Rotten\u201d is an outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Two brothers set out to write the world\u2019s first musical in this hilarious mash-up of 16th-century Shakespeare and 21st-century Broadway.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O\u2019Farrell, \u201cSomething Rotten\u201d garnered 10 Tony nominations. It was lauded by audience and critics alike as \u201cthe funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Nick and Nigel Bottom, two struggling playwrights in Renaissance London, need a hit. As the brothers and their acting troupe rehearse their latest work, \u201cRichard II,\u201d the Bottoms\u2019 patron, Lady Clapham, arrives to announce that William Shakespeare has also written a new play. The title:\u201d\u00a0Richard II.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Clapham issues an ultimatum: if the Bottom brothers don\u2019t deliver her a hit play \u201con the morrow,\u201d their working relationship will come to an end.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When Nick\u2019s wife, Bea, is forced to find work, Nick takes their meager savings to Soothsayer Alley.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There he finds Thomas Nostradamus, nephew of the famous soothsayer, who gazes into the future and foresees a new entertainment phenomenon: \u201cThe Musical,\u201d a play where actors suddenly burst into song.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Nick has his million-pound idea. The Bottom brothers begin work on a musical about the Black Death, but when Shakespeare gets wind of their idea, he steals Nigel\u2019s notebook.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Desperate for revenge, Nick pays Thomas for one more prediction &#8212; the name and plot of the greatest play Shakespeare will ever write. Thomas answers, \u201cOmelette,\u201d setting the stage for the Bottom brothers\u2019 own masterpiece \u2013 \u201cOmelette, The Musical.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">For Brandywiners Ltd., there\u2019s no place like home \u2013 as long as home is Longwood Gardens.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Every summer,\u00a0the\u00a0company presents a large-scale musical production at Longwood Gardens and contributes\u00a0the\u00a0proceeds to cultural, educational and civic causes throughout\u00a0the\u00a0Delaware Valley.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Brandywiners have entertained at holiday and retirement parties at the Wilmington Country Club, the DuPont Country Club, the Newark Country Club, Delaware Art Museum, Hagley Soda House, Winterthur Museum and Garden, and the Chase Center on the Riverfront.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Performances at Longwood Gardens are set for 8 p.m. each night.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets are $38 for general admission ($33 for youth) and include all-day Gardens Admission.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On July 18, the Brandywine Museum of Art (1 Hoffman Mill Road, Chadds Ford, <a href=\"http:\/\/brandywine.org\/\">brandywine.org<\/a>) is hosting \u201cConcerts in the Courtyard: Parlour Noir.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Visitors will be able to enjoy a concert under the stars in the Museum&#8217;s outdoor courtyard featuring swing and jazz music by Parlour Noir.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Since 2017, Parlour Noir, which is based in Philly\u2019s Mount Airy neighborhood, has been a well-spring of traditional jazz music.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band swings hard through a repertoire that spans 1922-1945, including a handful of original tunes made specifically for the dance floor.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Over the course of the last eight years, Parlour Noir has become one of Philadelphia&#8217;s premier swing bands.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Museum galleries will be open from 6-7 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This event is rain or shine.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets for this event, which are $25, are transferable to another person for this performance but not refundable.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Food and drinks will be available for purchase from the Millstone Cafe. No outside food or beverages are permitted.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Now through July 19, the Malvern Fire Company Fair (Monument Grounds, Monument Avenue, Malvern, 610-647-0693, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pa-carnivals.com\/\">http:\/\/www.pa-carnivals.com<\/a>) will be held from 6-10 p.m. each night.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The free Malvern Fire Company Fair features rides, games and fun for the entire family and discount ride coupons will be available at local merchants.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Guests can ride an unlimited number of rides at the 2025 Malvern Fire Company Carnival for just $30 per person per day when purchased online.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This annual fire department fundraiser features rides for all ages by Houghton Enterprises, plenty of delicious food and treats, carnival games &amp; prizes, fire truck rides, and more.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Fireworks will be held on July 18 at 9:30 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There are two things you can be sure of in this area every July \u2013 scorching heat waves and an assortment of festivals, outside music events, carnivals, family-oriented celebrations and summertime fairs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20719\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20719\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20719\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kimberton-fair-350x156.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"156\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20719\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kimberton Community Fair<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you enjoy country fairs, you should check out the 96th Annual Kimberton Community Fair (Kimberton Fairgrounds, Route 113, Kimberton, 610-933-4566, <a id=\"OWAd8a89d03-cc30-728f-50a9-1d52df59bf90\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/kimbertonfair.org\/\">http:\/\/kimbertonfair.org<\/a>) which is running from July 21-26.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Kimberton Community Fair, which was first staged in 1929, is one of the oldest community fairs in the state \u2014 and one of the last \u201cfree admission\u201d fairs operating in the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs. The Kimberton Fair is a \u201cfree admission fair with parking by donation.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">As always, the fair offers a huge array of free attractions \u2014 a festive midway with amusement rides, live entertainment shows, nightly contests, exhibit buildings and livestock displays.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There will be a fireworks display on July 26.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The fair will be held at the Kimberton Fairgrounds on Route 113 approximately one mile south of Phoenixville. The non-profit event, which lists the volunteer Kimberton Fire Company as its beneficiary, attracts over 60,000 people each year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There will also be open class and 4-H competitions along with a full midway of rides by Reithoffer Shows.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Kimberton Fair is a \u201crain-or-shine\u201d event \u2013 more or less.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">According to the event\u2019s website, they never officially \u201cclose\u201d the fair as a result of rain because they must remain \u201copen\u201d to adhere to Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture operating guidelines.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The indoor attractions stay open even in inclement weather, but the festival may shut down any amusement ride if the weather causes safety issues.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The \u201c2025 Town Tours and Village Walks\u201d program has returned for its 31st year with the theme of \u201cUntold Stories.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u00a0This year\u2019s programs will focus on people and places that are not the economic or social elite, war heroes, or celebrities.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The featured sites will represent the everyday citizens and places of Chester County that are the foundation of our history and heritage.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Featured sites include those connected to the Underground Railroad, the shift workers of our industries, educators, farmers, Revolutionary War soldiers, and more. Some of the sites featured this year include Barnard Station in Pocopson, Coatesville&#8217;s business district, charcoal production sites at Warwick County Park, and more.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The programs are free and held weekly, on Thursdays, now through August 21 at locations throughout Chester County<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Every program starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Instead of Thursday, this week\u2019s tour will be held on Saturday July 26.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With a theme of \u201cLafayette Day,\u201d the tour will start at 10 a.m. at Thornbury Farm, which is located at 1256 Thornbury Road in West Chester.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20720\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20720\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20720\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/newlin-grist-mill-1112-350x180.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"180\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Newlin\u00a0Grist\u00a0Mill<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Newlin\u00a0Grist\u00a0Mill (219 South Cheyney Road, Glen Mills, 610-459-2359, <a id=\"OWA13ad8c8f-91f9-8bfd-b773-d90faebec33c\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"http:\/\/www.newlingristmill.org\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newlingristmill.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.newlingristmill.org<\/a>) is holding a \u201cPublic Archaeology Day\u201d on July 19.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill\u2019s professional archaeologist, Keith Doms, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site\u2019s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Depending on the day, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Excavations this season are planned for the Trimble farm complex in the Historic Area.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Trimble family built their house on the property adjoining the Mill in 1739 and, over time, built a whole complex of structures to support the operations of their household and farm.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">By conducting archaeological studies in the area around the Trimble House, the Newlin Grist Mill staff hopes to learn more about the people who lived and worked there in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The event will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. It is free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">If you would like to help out with the dig, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend. For safety, hands-on participation is limited to those ages 5+.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The West Chester Railroad (610-430-2233, <a id=\"OWAd0fc68f3-d4e5-d4b4-6104-011f320d7831\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wcrailroad.com\/\">www.wcrailroad.com<\/a>) is running its \u201cSummer Picnic Specials\u201d every Sunday now through September 22 at noon each day.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Passengers can enjoy a relaxing 90-minute train ride from West Chester to Glen Mills and return on a warm summer afternoon. Tours are scheduled for July 27 and August 3, 7, 17, 21, 24, 28 There will also be tours on September 14 and 28.<\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><i>There are also numerous kayak and moonlight kayak tours scheduled throughout the summer.<\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">As part of Historic Philadelphia\u2019s anniversary celebration at Franklin Square (200 Sixth Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/phillychineselanternfestival.com\/\">phillychineselanternfestival.com<\/a>), the organization is illuminating the park with its annual <a name=\"x__Hlk508277759\"><\/a>\u201cPhiladelphia Chinese Lantern Festival in Franklin Square.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Now through August 31, Franklin Square will come alive every night with its Chinese Lantern Festival featuring more than two dozen illuminated lanterns \u2013 all constructed by lantern artisans from China.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In addition to the gorgeous light installations, visitors can enjoy live cultural stage performances, see the\u00a0choreographed fountain light show in the historic Rendell Family Fountain,\u00a0taste expanded food and drink options including Asian cuisine and American comfort food, drink a toast at the Dragon Beer Garden, and shop for Chinese folk artists\u2019 crafts created on site as well as Festival-themed merchandise.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Guests can also play Philly Mini Golf and ride the Parx Liberty Carousel at a discounted rate.\u00a0A portion of the proceeds from the festival benefits Historic Philadelphia, Inc. for the programming and care of this important public space and its many year-round free events.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Chinese-inspired performances will take place in Franklin Square twice nightly. Performances, which celebrate Chinese performance art and entertainment, are 30-minutes long and are scheduled for 7 and 9 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Festival hours are 6-11 p.m. Admission is $25 for adults ($28 on Saturday and Sunday), $23\/$26 for youth, and $10 for children.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Philadelphia Expo Center (100 Station Road, Oaks, 610-529-3614,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/phillyexpocenter.com\/\">phillyexpocenter.com<\/a>) hosts one of the venue\u2019s most popular semiannual events this weekend.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On July 19, the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center will present the East Coast\u00a0Reptile\u00a0Super Expo featuring hundreds of live snakes and\u00a0reptiles.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Many people think snakes and lizards are interesting creatures and maybe even fun pets to own. If you fall into this category, you should check out the show on Saturday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">A wide array of\u00a0reptiles will be on display as part of the popular exhibition, which is an annual event that is closing in on its silver anniversary.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">One of the show\u2019s main attractions is a sales exhibit area featuring many vendors with live\u00a0reptiles, amphibians and arachnids as well as food items, supplies, books, cages, and related accessories.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The East Coast\u00a0Reptile\u00a0Super Expo, which is always a well-attended event, will run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in Hall B this Saturday.
