{"id":37055,"date":"2025-07-31T08:52:01","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T12:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=37055"},"modified":"2025-07-31T08:52:02","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T12:52:02","slug":"on-stage-a-tale-of-two-lauras-on-the-concert-schedule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=37055","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: A tale of two Lauras on the concert schedule"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff,<\/strong> <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20752\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20752\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20752\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/OIP-7.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laura Auer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This weekend, two of the top shows in the area will feature singer\/musicians named Laura &#8212; Laura Auer and Laura Cheadle.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Laura Auer is a singer from West Chester who relocated to the West Coast and established a reputation as one of the best new classical crossover artists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This weekend, she returns to the area for a pair of shows \u2013 August 1 at Shannondell at Valley Forge (10000 Shannondell Drive, Audubon, <a id=\"OWA65bbfa8a-0546-bc7c-1069-ee86e1ae664a\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shannondell.com\/\">www.shannondell.com<\/a>) at 7:30 p.m. and August 2 at 11:30 a.m. at <a name=\"_Hlk204818260\"><\/a>Lyceum Hall Center for the Arts\u00a0(432 High Street, Burlington, New Jersey, <a id=\"OWA2800477e-ec6b-9fc6-946a-5cbacf1f1959\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/alink\/link?url=https:\/\/lyceumhallarts.com&amp;source=serp-local&amp;h=Y9UYCtExUuMha4wHwYttX2lY+YAOp8w317EgyAtBGYo=&amp;p=lw_magstwt&amp;ig=8FCB7FBF527B4E69A74542988A0C0070&amp;ypid=YN873x114398431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lyceumhallarts.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The event is billed as \u201cAria Nouveau: A Classical Crossover Concert with classical vocalists Laura Auer &amp; John Riesen.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Aria Nouveau is Auer\u2019s current project which features a vocal duo with a soprano (Auer) and a tenor (Riesen).<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis is a live show that I\u2019ve produced myself \u2013 all the music I\u2019ve been arranging,\u201d said Auer, during a phone interview Monday evening from her home in the Larchmont area of Los Angeles.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThere are pop opera songs, classical crossover songs and songs by Andrea Bocelli \u2013 big vocal stuff. I\u2019m really enjoying this genre of classical crossover. I currently have 37 dates on my calendar for this year.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Anna Netrebko and similar artists are at the forefront of the \u201cclassical crossover\u201d genre, a musical style in which elements of pop and opera seamlessly blend into a lush landscape of soaring vocals, rich orchestrations, and unbridled emotion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Aria Nouveau follows the same trail, combining the world-class talents of Auer (Top 10 Billboard-charting album series, syndicated music videos on VH1\/Lifestyle Network, multiple symphony appearances) and Riesen (\u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent\u201d finalist, Lincoln Center soloist, four-plus million Spotify streams) in a thrilling duo concert event.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The two veteran singers have a repertoire which includes \u201cNessun Dorma\u201d (\u201cTurandot\u201d), \u201cAmigos Para Siempre,\u201d \u201cQuando me\u2019n vo\u2019\u201d (\u201cLa Boh\u00e8me\u201d) and Broadway blockbusters\u00a0such as \u201cMusic of the Night\u201d (\u201cPhantom of the Opera\u201d) and \u201cBring Him Home\u201d (\u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">They also sing classic standards \u2013 songs made famous by legendary singers such as Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and Celine Dion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cJohn Riesen \u2013 we have a very interesting story,\u201d said Auer. \u201cI found him because he has a small promo company for classical composers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe started working together for releasing my music. His company \u2013 Emitha \u2013 is in New York, so we were on the phone a lot.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI was working on \u2018Stranger in Paradise\u2019 for my \u2018Summer\u2019 album back in 2022. It was a beautiful arrangement, and I was looking for the right tenor.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI knew both he and his wife (Gillian Riesen) were opera singers. I asked John to join me, and we did \u2018Amigos Para Siempre,\u2019 the Sarah Brightman hit. We sounded good together and our personalities meshed well.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 2022, Auer embarked on an ambitious project \u2013 albums representing the seasons with each season having its own album.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSpring\u201d was released in April 2022. \u201cSummer\u201d first saw the light of day in September 2022 with \u201cAutumn\u201d following in November 2022. \u201cWinter\u201d finished the series with its release in December 2023.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWith my \u2018Seasons\u2019 project, I just wanted to flood the internet with new music,\u201d said Auer. \u201cThe songs were all covers. I\u2019ve yet to release any original songs under the name Auer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI just wanted to put this massive amount of work out there \u2013 classical, jazz, opera, classical crossover.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI grouped the songs by seasons. \u2018Spring\u2019 is light and pretty. \u2018Summer\u2019 has the feel of opera in an amphitheater under the stars \u2013 \u2018Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201c\u2018Autumn\u2019 is very \u2018Phantom of the Opera\u2019 \u2013 leaves falling, sad songs. It has an aria from \u2018La Traviata.\u2019 \u2018Winter\u2019 was magical \u2013 snowy songs with sweeping strings.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Auer\u2019s first album &#8212; \u201cChasing\u00a0Down the\u00a0Dream\u201d &#8212; came out more than a decade ago \u2013 under the name Laura Promiscuo.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Auer moved to Southern California a few years ago to pursue the next phases of her career as an entertainer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI was a touring musician for a long time,\u201d said Auer. \u201cIt was hard to be an indie musician.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSo, I started doing voice acting and that led to my move to Los Angeles. And it led to the animation project.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Back in the early part of the 2000s, Auer was Laura Mills \u2013 a student at West Chester Henderson High School. She was an athlete as well as a musician during her high school days and played field hockey and lacrosse for the Warriors.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Auer was a singer long before she was an athlete.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWhen I was growing up, there was always singing going around in our home,\u201d said\u00a0Auer. \u201cMy grandfather had an operatic voice and my father sang. My family listened to opera, classical music, classic rock \u2014 and a lot of Disney music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI decided to play viola at a young age. I even played viola in the high school orchestra. I attended Penn State University as an operatic voice major.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI was in an a capella group there. That is what inspired me to start writing \u2014 and to become a solo artist. I was a voice major, but I didn\u2019t want to just sing opera or classical. I liked all different kinds of music.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Diversity has played a major role in\u00a0the talented singer\u2019s musical development.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWhen I started songwriting, I was writing soul music, pop songs, R&amp;B and soulful songs,\u201d said\u00a0Auer, who trained with world renowned artists\u00a0including international tenor, Maestro Antonio Conte Pugliese, and Arlene\u00a0Shrut, head vocal coach at The Julliard School.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIn 2013, I decided to go solo and changed my name from Laura Mills to Laura\u00a0Promiscuo,\u201d said Auer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy mother\u2019s maiden name is\u00a0Promiscuo\u00a0and I really took pride in my grandfather\u2019s name. I\u2019ve been performing live forever but my first show as Laura\u00a0Promiscuo\u00a0was at Pietro\u2019s Prime in West Chester in August 2013.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After a while, Laura Promiscuo morphed into SOLA, who was billed as, \u201ca singer and songwriter with a seductive and sultry musical style similar to female pop icons Sade and Lana del Rey\u2013 additionally drawing from crossover world artists like Sting, Shakira, Annie Lennox and Robert Plant.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">SOLA began recording with music producer and cinematographer Simon Rogers and electronic violinist and Coatesville native Brian Fitzy.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Her first video, \u201cCloser To You,\u201d won several songwriting awards and jumpstarted her solo singing career. During this time, SOLA was also writing music for TV and film when her photographer connected her with Brazilian DJ\/producer, Rey Vercosa, who was spinning for festivals in Ibiza.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Vercosa asked her to write songs for his label, RV Records. Cheadle is an act Jamey Reilly books several times a year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cJamey\u2019s is my favorite spot,\u201d said Cheadle, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from her home in Philadelphia. \u201cIt\u2019s a great place to play.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Cheadle has a new album to support \u2013 \u201cMannequin.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI signed a deal with Sony Music,\u201d said\u00a0Cheadle. \u201cI released a Christmas album with Sony on their Orchard label two years ago. \u2018Mannequin\u2019 is my first full Sony album featuring my music.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">For\u00a0Cheadle, Christmas came a little early in 2023.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI won a game show on CBS,\u201d said\u00a0Cheadle. \u201cThe game show was \u2018Raid the Cage\u201d and the final aired last December.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cRaid the Cage\u201d\u00a0is a television game show hosted by\u00a0Damon Wayans Jr.\u00a0and\u00a0Jeannie Mai\u00a0that premiered on\u00a0CBS\u00a0on October 13, 2023. It is an adaptation of the\u00a0Israeli television series\u00a0of the same name.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Two teams of two contestants compete on each episode to earn time to retrieve prizes from a giant cage, with the team having the highest total keeping the prizes and playing the bonus round.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI won $91,000,\u201d said\u00a0Cheadle. \u201cAnd having all the people see me on national TV in the finals will be a real boost to my music career. This has been my best year ever.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When Cheadle was asked if she blew through the $91K yet, she offered an affirmative reply.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI took the money I won from the show and bought a house in Philly,\u201d said Cheadle.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">A new house and a new album\u2014Cheadle has definitely been very busy.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Ironically, Cheadle\u2019s focus this summer hasn\u2019t been on \u201cMannequin,\u201d but rather her other band.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been touring all summer,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cI\u2019ve been touring with Laura Cheadle + The Girls, which is a power pop band.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Whenever I play Jamey\u2019s, it\u2019s always with the Laura Cheadle Family Band.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Jamey\u2019s is a venue in Delaware County that specializes in booking blues and blues-rock acts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Cheadle has a band that features blues, soul, funk \u2013 and a lot of Cheadles.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Her four-piece group features her brother Jim Cheadle\u00a0on guitar and her father James Cheadle\u00a0on keyboards along with\u00a0Dave Ferebee, the only non-Cheadle,\u00a0on drums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI haven\u2019t played that much with the Family Band this year because I\u2019ve been playing so much with Laura Cheadle + The Girls.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been all over the country \u2013 Washington, Oregon, the Midwest, upstate New York.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe band is me and my wife, Michelle Cheadle. We\u2019ve been making music together for two years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI met her when I was hiking New Hope. I was hiking in front of her. We\u2019ve blossomed together. Now, we\u2019re focused on advocating for women and LGBTQIA+.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe got married in 2022. Michelle is from Delaware and I\u2019m from New Jersey. Now, we\u2019re living in the house I bought in South Philly.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Laura Cheadle + The Girls features Laura Cheadle on guitar and vocals, Michelle Cheadle on bass and vocals along with rotating drummers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe Girl Band is a very festival-based band \u2013 crazy sets and running around in the audience. We\u2019ve played only pride shows this summer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe have tons of song written by Michelle and me. She\u2019s a fantastic bass player. Our music is more pop-rock with my soulful voice.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Laura Cheadle + The Girls have released three singles so far \u2013 \u201cAir Gets Tight\u201d in March, \u201cMake Me Go Crazy\u201d in May and \u201cLola Has a Girlfriend\u201d in June,<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re touring with songs written by Michelle and me,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cThe song \u2018Lola\u2019 is queer-oriented. We\u2019re really representing women. \u2018Lola\u2019 is a gay anthem for the summer.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This weekend, it will be time for blues and funk rather than \u00a0Rainbow.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ll be using the Cheadle Family Band,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cI\u2019ve only gotten to play with them two or three times this year. They\u2019re such a great band.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">James \u201cPapa Cheadle\u201d has played and recorded with Don Cornell, DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Four Aces, Grover Washington Jr., The Soul Survivors, Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Cheadle\u00a0has played with her family ever since she was a young girl.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy father has influenced me so much,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cHe\u2019s a seasoned jazz musician who used to be a music professor at Rowan University. So, I\u2019ve always been involved with music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cHe has his own recording studio in South Jersey called the Swedesboro Music Studio and he records a lot of different people. He and I are both devoted to music. His influence on me is blues and jazz \u2013 but I make it modern.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Cheadle\u2019s music career began when she was four years old. Her father created the \u201cAppreciation Choir\u201d for the Persian Gulf War troops in the early nineties and created a music video that was aired on VH1 and MTV.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Along with her two older twin brothers and various other children, Cheadle\u00a0toured around the United States singing for audiences.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When she was 11, she enlisted her father to teach her how to play drums. From her \u201ctween\u201d to \u201cmid-teen\u201d years, Cheadle\u00a0was in a band with her brothers called Sibling \u2013 a pop group that played at local restaurants, churches, music venues, private parties and parades.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been in the Philadelphia\/New Jersey music scene for quite some time,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing acoustic stuff since I was 16 and then put my band together later.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSibling was a blend, and I morphed into my music. Songwriting comes very naturally to me. Sometimes, I wake up with a melody in my head. It\u2019s just there.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve always been a super fan of old soul. My biggest influences are Aretha Franklin, Tower of Power, James Brown and Stevie Wonder. I love real drums and all the organic instruments.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSome of my songs are rock. Some of them are blues. It\u2019s hard to classify me \u2013 maybe pop\/rock with soul influence. I just do what I feel.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Cheadle\u00a0Family has built a strong reputation nationally.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe were on an NBC television show called \u2018The Next Great Family Band\u2019 in 2013,\u201d said Cheadle.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThat got us a lot of interest in being booked for tours. They actually came to our place in Swedesboro. It tells the story of a hapless florist shop worker who grows a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The musical, which traces its roots to a low-budget 1960\u00a0black comedy\u00a0film, \u201cThe Little Shop of Horrors,\u201d premiered\u00a0off-off-Broadway\u00a0in 1982 before moving to the\u00a0Orpheum Theatre <a id=\"OWA84bf58c1-5519-65d4-27e2-cd33477ffbda\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Off-Broadway\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Off-Broadway\">off-Broadway<\/a>, where it had a five-year run. It later became a\u00a0Broadway\u00a0production.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">An owner of a florist shop on Skid Row, Gravis Mushnick has two employees &#8212; Audrey and Seymour. When Seymour fouls up a floral arrangement for a dentistcustomer, Mushnick fires him.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Hoping to change his boss\u2019 mind, Seymour talks about a plant he has grown from seeds that he got over on Central Avenue.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Seymour has also unwittingly cultivated a singing botanical menace. To the delight of Audrey, he names the plant \u201cAudrey II.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Mushnick is unimpressed and gives Seymour one week to revive the plant. The usual plant food does not nourish it, but when Seymour accidentally pricks his finger, he discovers that the plant craves blood.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Fed on Seymour\u2019s blood, Audrey II begins to grow. Audrey II continues to grow and that means more blood.
