\"\"It\u2019s August and, as usual, the weekend calendar is filled with special events \u2013 many of which are annual traditional events.<\/div>\n
Not surprisingly, the Brandywine Valley is host to a plethora of the area\u2019s favorite events.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The \u201c2025 Town Tours and Village Walks\u201d (www.chescoplanning.org\/Historic\/TownTours<\/a>) program has returned for its 31st year with the theme of \u201cUntold Stories.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This year\u2019s programs will focus on people and places that are not the economic or social elite, war heroes, or celebrities.<\/div>\n
The featured sites will represent the everyday citizens and places of Chester County that are the foundation of our history and heritage.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n
Featured sites include those connected to the Underground Railroad, the shift workers of our industries, educators, farmers, Revolutionary War soldiers, and more. Some of the sites featured this year include Barnard Station in Pocopson, Coatesville’s business district and charcoal production sites at Warwick County Park, and more.<\/div>\n

The programs are free and held weekly, on Thursdays, now through August 21 at locations throughout Chester County<\/div>\n
The event for August 21 will focus on \u201cHistoric Yellow Springs, West Pikeland Township.\u201d<\/div>\n

Did you know vaccinations were given to Revolutionary War soldiers at Yellow Springs or that patient John Knight was wrapped in spring water-soaked sheets as part of his spa treatment?<\/div>\n

Did you know deceased PA Orphan School children are buried at the Vincent Baptist Church cemetery on Art School Road or that an English landscape gardener designed the Water Meadow pathways?<\/div>\n

Did you know Burt Bacharach wrote music for \u201cThe Blob\u201d here or that Steve McQueen raced his Corvette around local country roads or that Patty Duke, Lee Meriwether and Robert Lansing starred in movies made here by Good News Productions?<\/div>\n

Participants at the event on August 21 will be able to learn so many \u201cuntold stories\u201d from over 300 years of history at Yellow Springs.<\/div>\n

Summer Biergarten<\/p><\/div>\n

The Village of Sugartown\u00a0(690 Sugartown\u00a0Road, Malvern, 610-640-2667, http:\/\/www.historicsugartown.org<\/a>), is hosting its final \u201cSummer Biergarten\u201d this year is on August 21.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
The Village\u2019s biergartens will offer craft beer from Locust Lane Craft Brewery. As an added attraction, Chaddsford Winery will be onsite selling its top-rated wine.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
There will also be food trucks cooking delicious food for guests to purchase. Participating food trucks are Humpty\u2019s Dumplings\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Pizzeria La Familia.<\/div>\n

Music will be provided by The Geezers and Shake Down, a Biergarten favorite.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Visitors to the event will also have the opportunity to explore Sugartown\u2019s historic buildings with their friends and watch paper marbling demonstrations by the bookbinders of Sugartown\u2019s Bindery Shop.<\/div>\n

Historic Sugartown, Inc. is dedicated to the preservation of 11 structures and 9.2 acres within the Sugartown\u00a0National Historic Register District. Historic Sugartown\u00a0has meticulously restored the village and connects the community to America\u2019s past through engaging programs, events, art shows and workshops that explore rural 19th-century village life.<\/div>\n

In 1804, Eli Shugart opened a tavern to serve weary travelers. Though he only stayed two years, the village became known as \u201cShugart\u2019s Town.\u201d<\/div>\n

On June 2, 1700, Philadelphia\u2019s Gloria Dei (Old Swedes\u2019) Church had its \u201cgrand opening.\u201d<\/div>\n

Guests can celebrate its 325th anniversary with a guided tour led by historian and archivist Jeanette Woehr.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It is easy to imagine the past when visiting Gloria Dei Church. Located on nearly five acres of green space, this national historic site predates the arrival of William Penn and the founding of Pennsylvania.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The present-day church was built between 1698 and 1703 to serve a parish of European settlers who lived along the banks of the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Today it serves as a link to a nearly forgotten history. Woehr will describe the history of this church, from its founding to the present day, and talk about many important historical figures who worshipped here or are buried in the graveyard.<\/div>\n

Tour participants will meet inside the church building at noon. The tour should take about an hour. Rain or Shine. Tickets are $15 each. Advanced registration is required.<\/div>\n

On August 15, Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery<\/a>\u00a0and The Cemetery Chronicles<\/a>\u00a0will present \u201cA Picnic at the Mausoleum with Poe\u201d at Riverview Cemetery (3300 North Market Street, Wilmington, riverviewcem.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n

Observed every August,\u00a0Obon\u00a0is a Buddhist festival welcoming home one\u2019s ancestors.<\/div>\n

Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia continues this important Shofuso tradition, to light lanterns and float them on Shofuso\u2019s pond for Obon.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This night of remembrance and commemoration is dedicated to those no longer with us. Each registered participant will be able to choose if they would like to launch floating lanterns on Shofuso\u2019s pond or simply observe the serenity of the experience.<\/div>\n
Obon is a series of summer events in Japan based on Buddhist and ancestral worship that enshrine and celebrate the spirits of ancestors.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Typically, people return to their hometowns to celebrate Obon each year. Families gather, clean their graveyard and the shrine in their house, and light lanterns to welcome the spirits home.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mukaebi is the welcoming fire and opening night of Obon.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
After the spirits spend a few days with family, the Bon-Odori dancers form a circle under the lanterns to guide the spirits back to the otherworld. This is the\u00a0Okuribi, or culmination of Obon when the ancestors are sent back to the spirit world.<\/div>\n
The event on Saturday will start at 7:30 p.m.<\/div>\n

Guests can savor some sweetness in the Barrel Room. The winery\u2019s latest pairing experience highlights wines that are brimming with flavor and decadence.<\/div>\n

The trained staff will guide visitors through a pre-selected tasting of five widely\u00a0diverse wines from across the winery\u2019s portfolio alongside artisan cheeses and other accoutrements.<\/div>\n

The Schuylkill Banks Riverboat Tour (www.schuylkillbanks.org\/events\/riverboat-tours-1<\/a>) presents \u201cSecrets of the Schuylkill<\/a>\u201d now through October.<\/div>\n

The boat ride is a one-hour family-friendly tour of Philly\u2019s second biggest river featuring sights such as Bartram\u2019s Garden and Fairmount Water Works.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Riders can discover the Hidden River on a fun and educational riverboat tour while seeing spectacular views of Philadelphia.<\/div>\n
They can also learn about the past, present, and future of the tidal Schuylkill River and its impact on Philadelphia on a one-hour\u00a0Secrets of the Schuylkill\u00a0tour which costs $25 for adults and $15 for children (age 12 and under).<\/div>\n

Tours depart from the Walnut Street Dock under the Walnut Street Bridge on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. Tours are scheduled for August 17, 21, 24 and 28 There will also be tours on September 14 and 28.<\/div>\n

There are also numerous kayak and moonlight kayak tours scheduled throughout the summer.<\/div>\n

As part of Historic Philadelphia\u2019s anniversary celebration at Franklin Square (200 Sixth Street, Philadelphia, phillychineselanternfestival.com<\/a>), the organization is illuminating the park with its annual \u201cPhiladelphia Chinese Lantern Festival in Franklin Square.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Now through August 31, Franklin Square will come alive every night with its Chinese Lantern Festival featuring more than two dozen illuminated lanterns \u2013 all constructed by lantern artisans from China.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In addition to the gorgeous light installations, visitors can enjoy live cultural stage performances, see the\u00a0choreographed fountain light show in the historic Rendell Family Fountain,\u00a0taste expanded food and drink options including Asian cuisine and American comfort food, drink a toast at the Dragon Beer Garden, and shop for Chinese folk artists\u2019 crafts created on site as well as Festival-themed merchandise.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Guests can also play Philly Mini Golf and ride the Parx Liberty Carousel at a discounted rate.\u00a0A portion of the proceeds from the festival benefits Historic Philadelphia, Inc. for the programming and care of this important public space and its many year-round free events.<\/div>\n

Chinese-inspired performances will take place in Franklin Square twice nightly. Performances, which celebrate Chinese performance art and entertainment, are 30-minutes long and are scheduled for 7 and 9 p.m.<\/div>\n

Festival hours are 6-11 p.m. Admission is $25 for adults ($28 on Saturday and Sunday), $23\/$26 for youth, and $10 for children.<\/div>\n
There will be two very different but equally attractive ethnic festivals\u00a0this weekend\u00a0at Penn\u2019s Landing (Delaware Avenue, Philadelphia, www.delawareriverevents.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n

Both of the free festivals deal with Indians — but not the Native American kind.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
West Indian or East Indian — both will be featured this weekend.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Penn\u2019s Landing will host the annual Festival of India on August 16 and the annual Caribbean Festival on August 17.<\/div>\n
The Festival of India, which is sponsored by the Council of Indian Organizations of Greater Philadelphia, is a festive event that features a day full of food, music, dancing and crafts.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Visitors can celebrate India with various cultural organizations, as well as Northern and Southern-style Indian cuisine such as chicken tikka masala, lassi, vada pav, dosa, as well as classical and Bollywood performances, music, shopping, henna tattoos, and tons of fun. The festival is presented by Indian Organizations in Greater Philadelphia (CIO).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The event will host a variety of vendors who will be selling a wide array of traditional Indian arts and crafts including clothes, jewelry, music, and other cultural items. Traditional Mahandi work (artistic design) will be available to be done on both hands and feet.\u00a0Mahandi or hands painting is an old Indian custom still have been practiced by most of the Indian women.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A wide selection of food items from both North and South India will be available for purchase, including such taste treats as tandoori chicken, tikka masala, kolkata rasgulla, gujarati dohkla, chennai idli, korma and an array of Indian breads including chapatti, poori and nan.<\/div>\n

The free festival will run from noon-7 p.m.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Penn\u2019s Landing will host the 39th\u00a0Annual Caribbean Festival (https:\/\/phillycaribbeanfestival.com<\/a>) on August 17.<\/div>\n
Sunday\u2019s festival, which is free and open to the public, is a celebration of the culture of 14 Caribbean Islands. The event, which runs from noon-8 p.m., features live island entertainment including drumming, dancing and music.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As always, the festival will have cultural booths where people can get information about the islands of the Caribbean. There will also be a marketplace with vendors selling Caribbean arts and crafts, fashion items and souvenirs.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Island cuisine will be well represented with a number of vendors offering Caribbean delicacies such as Jamaican jerk-chicken and hard-dough bread, escovitched fish and festival cakes, codfish fritters, Jamaican Patties, curried goat and rice & peas.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In addition to the events focusing on East Indians and West Indians, there is also a festival this weekend honoring the Indians of North America.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
On August 16 and 17, the Museum of Indian Culture (2825 Fish Hatchery Road, Allentown, 610-797-2121, http:\/\/museumofindianculture.org<\/a>) is hosting the 45th Annual Roasting Ears of Corn Festival.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The 2025 event, which is Eastern Pennsylvania\u2019s oldest American Indian\u00a0festival, is a showcase for American Indian drumming, singing, dancing and food.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Many of the original cottages surround the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, an open-air theater where numerous cultural events are held. The Rosengartens hired architect and former classmate Charles L. Borie to design the house, which was completed in 1913.
