{"id":37104,"date":"2025-08-15T09:40:01","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T13:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=37104"},"modified":"2025-08-15T09:40:02","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T13:40:02","slug":"what-to-do-yellow-springs-featured-in-latest-town-tours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=37104","title":{"rendered":"What To Do: Yellow Springs featured in latest Town Tours"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20787\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/TownTours-Logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"161\" \/>It\u2019s August and, as usual, the weekend calendar is filled with special events \u2013 many of which are annual traditional events.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Not surprisingly, the Brandywine Valley is host to a plethora of the area\u2019s favorite events.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The \u201c2025 Town Tours and Village Walks\u201d (<a id=\"OWA2aa2b960-bfd3-36b0-130b-3725012bb6fe\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chescoplanning.org\/Historic\/TownTours\">www.chescoplanning.org\/Historic\/TownTours<\/a>) program has returned for its 31st year with the theme of \u201cUntold Stories.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This year\u2019s programs will focus on people and places that are not the economic or social elite, war heroes, or celebrities.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The featured sites will represent the everyday citizens and places of Chester County that are the foundation of our history and heritage.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Featured sites include those connected to the Underground Railroad, the shift workers of our industries, educators, farmers, Revolutionary War soldiers, and more. Some of the sites featured this year include Barnard Station in Pocopson, Coatesville&#8217;s business district and charcoal production sites at Warwick County Park, and more.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The programs are free and held weekly, on Thursdays, now through August 21 at locations throughout Chester County<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The event for August 21 will focus on \u201cHistoric Yellow Springs, West Pikeland Township.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Did you know vaccinations were given to Revolutionary War soldiers at Yellow Springs or that patient John Knight was wrapped in spring water-soaked sheets as part of his spa treatment?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Did you know deceased PA Orphan School children are buried at the Vincent Baptist Church cemetery on Art School Road or that an English landscape gardener designed the Water Meadow pathways?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Did you know Burt Bacharach wrote music for \u201cThe Blob\u201d here or that Steve McQueen raced his Corvette around local country roads or that Patty Duke, Lee Meriwether and Robert Lansing starred in movies made here by Good News Productions?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Participants at the event on August 21 will be able to learn so many \u201cuntold stories\u201d from over 300 years of history at Yellow Springs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Parking will be available at 1701 Art School Road in Chester Springs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20788 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/imagesdefault-1706729988279-350x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"175\" \/>This month\u2019s edition of the 2025 Kennett Underground\u00a0Railroad Bus Tours (<a id=\"OWAe1b6a4d8-9678-7370-9cbf-0eb41e3d99e3\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: http:\/\/www.kennettundergroundrr.org\/. Participating food trucks are Humpty\u2019s Dumplings<b>\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Pizzeria La Familia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Music will be provided by The Geezers and Shake Down, a Biergarten favorite.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Visitors to the event will also have the opportunity to explore Sugartown\u2019s historic buildings with their friends and watch paper marbling demonstrations by the bookbinders of Sugartown\u2019s Bindery Shop.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Historic Sugartown, Inc. is dedicated to the preservation of 11 structures and 9.2 acres within the Sugartown\u00a0National Historic Register District. Historic Sugartown\u00a0has meticulously restored the village and connects the community to America\u2019s past through engaging programs, events, art shows and workshops that explore rural 19th-century village life.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 1804, Eli Shugart opened a tavern to serve weary travelers. Though he only stayed two years, the village became known as \u201cShugart\u2019s Town.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets are $10. Guests can take a journey through time and space to learn about the age of the dinosaurs &#8212; and the asteroid that took them all out &#8212; during a hands-on fossil workshop.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The University of Pennsylvania Physics Outreach Group will present two programs \u2013 \u201cZoom Across the Universe!\u201d and \u201cSun Viewing with a Solar Telescope.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Other special activities are Creative Art Studio Workshops\u2019 \u201cNebula Spin Paintings\u201d and Slimetopia Playland Workshops\u2019 \u201cGalaxy Slime.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Admission is $24.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On August 17, there will be a guided tour of Gloria Dei Old Swedes\u2019 Church (916 South Swanson Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/preserveoldswedes.org\/\">preserveoldswedes.org<\/a>) at noon.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On June 2, 1700, Philadelphia\u2019s Gloria Dei (Old Swedes\u2019) Church had its \u201cgrand opening.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Guests can celebrate its 325th anniversary with a guided tour led by historian and archivist Jeanette Woehr.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">It is easy to imagine the past when visiting Gloria Dei Church. Located on nearly five acres of green space, this national historic site predates the arrival of William Penn and the founding of Pennsylvania.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The present-day church was built between 1698 and 1703 to serve a parish of European settlers who lived along the banks of the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Today it serves as a link to a nearly forgotten history. Woehr will describe the history of this church, from its founding to the present day, and talk about many important historical figures who worshipped here or are buried in the graveyard.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tour participants will meet inside the church building at noon. The tour should take about an hour. Rain or Shine. Tickets are $15 each. Advanced registration is required.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On August 15, <a id=\"OWA2227a494-8246-cbd3-261b-adce71b09776\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FriendsofHistoricRiverviewCemetery\">Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery<\/a>\u00a0and <a id=\"OWAad23a934-446a-7f48-2a7c-83106c0f1553\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=61563270666034\">The Cemetery Chronicles<\/a>\u00a0will present \u201cA Picnic at the Mausoleum with Poe\u201d at Riverview Cemetery (3300 North Market Street, Wilmington, <a href=\"http:\/\/riverviewcem.com\/\">riverviewcem.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The public is invited to join the Historic Riverview Cemetery for readings of Edgar Allen Poe\u2019s stories and poems on the lawn of Delaware\u2019s first public mausoleum.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Guests are requested to bring a picnic with favorite foods, a blanket or lawn chair, and a most curious spirit &#8212; and then settle in with friends and family for an enchanting summer evening among the tombstones.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">All ages are welcome but alcoholic beverages are not.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The free event will run from 6-8 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Guests are invited to visit the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden\u00a0(Lansdowne Drive and Horticultural Drive, Philadelphia, <a id=\"OWA07dab755-4f6e-264e-7f95-e8277d85bf53\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.japanesehouse.org\/\">www.japanesehouse.org<\/a>) on August 16 for the 2025 \u201cObon Lantern Floating Ceremony \u2013 Mukaebi.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Observed every August,\u00a0Obon\u00a0is a Buddhist festival welcoming home one\u2019s ancestors.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia continues this important Shofuso tradition, to light lanterns and float them on Shofuso\u2019s pond for Obon.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This night of remembrance and commemoration is dedicated to those no longer with us. Each registered participant will be able to choose if they would like to launch floating lanterns on Shofuso\u2019s pond or simply observe the serenity of the experience.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Obon is a series of summer events in Japan based on Buddhist and ancestral worship that enshrine and celebrate the spirits of ancestors.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Typically, people return to their hometowns to celebrate Obon each year. Families gather, clean their graveyard and the shrine in their house, and light lanterns to welcome the spirits home.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Mukaebi is the welcoming fire and opening night of Obon.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After the spirits spend a few days with family, the Bon-Odori dancers form a circle under the lanterns to guide the spirits back to the otherworld. This is the\u00a0Okuribi, or culmination of Obon when the ancestors are sent back to the spirit world.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The event on Saturday will start at 7:30 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Now through August 24, the Chaddsford Winery (632 Baltimore Pike, Chadds Ford, 610-388-6221, <a id=\"OWA23ddba43-c35a-f859-b606-629b2e099ce8\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chaddsford.com\/\">http:\/\/www.chaddsford.com<\/a>) is presenting \u201cReserve Tastings &#8212; Something Sweet.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Guests can savor some sweetness in the Barrel Room. The festival is presented by Indian Organizations in Greater Philadelphia (CIO).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The event will host a variety of vendors who will be selling a wide array of traditional Indian arts and crafts including clothes, jewelry, music, and other cultural items. Also performing will be Sicanni Purizaca.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Other live music and dance performances\u00a0include American Indian singers, Aztec Fire Dancers, hoop dancers, and American Indian dancers, singers and performers from all over Canada and the U.S.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Festival attendees will be able to shop at the Marketplace for Native American jewelry, fine arts, and clothing.
