{"id":37215,"date":"2025-09-17T09:35:47","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T13:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=37215"},"modified":"2025-09-18T07:35:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T11:35:47","slug":"on-stage-extra-the-wildwood-return-to-philly-with-a-unique-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=37215","title":{"rendered":"On Stage (Extra): The Wildwoods return to Philly with a unique sound"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff,<\/strong> <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20871\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20871\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20871\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Wildwoods.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20871\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wildwoods<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the heart of Lincoln, Nebraska, The Wildwoods emerged as a folk\/Americana trio &#8212; a musical tapestry woven by the husband-and-wife duo, Noah Gose (guitar) and Chloe\u00a0Gose\u00a0(violin), alongside long-time friend and bassist, Andrew Vaggalis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">United by a passion for folk\/Americana, the trio\u2019s influences range from Watchhouse and Nickel Creek to Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Their music, though comfortably under the folk\/Americana umbrella, weaves intricate chord structures and emotional textures that defy genre boundaries.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The trio\u2019s story is a symphony of exploration and connection, a journey that has taken them from venues in the Midwest to international stages, carving out a unique place in the folk landscape.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band\u2019s journey has taken it to the Philadelphia area this year \u2013 not once, not twice, not three times, but four times.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Wildwoods headlined a show at the Ardmore Music Hall in March. Later, the trio headed to Philly \u2013 to Center City for a concert at City Winery in May. In July, the trio headlined at the Sellersville Theater.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Now, autumn is knocking at the door, and The Wildwoods are coming back to the Quaker City. On September 17, they will top the bill at The Fallser Club (3721 Midvale Avenue, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/thefallserclub.com\/\">thefallserclub.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Wildwoods are currently on a tour that takes up most of September and October. It is an album support tour for their latest release, \u201cDear Meadowlark.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re wrapping up the summer tour and getting ready for the fall tour,\u201d said Chloe Gose, during a recent phone interview from her home in Lincoln, Nebraska.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s sort of nerve wracking. It seems like it\u2019s a never-ending tour. But we will stop at the end of October.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cFor the winter, we\u2019ll spend most of it at home. We\u2019ll be working on a new batch of songs.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Winter in Nebraska is a good time to spend most of it at home.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cEach of us works individually on songs,\u201d said Gose. \u201cNoah does all the writing. He\u2019ll do the basic structure and then all of us add parts to it. It takes new shape as we continue.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Wildwoods\u2019 music features the purity of real instruments &#8212; violin, acoustic guitar, upright bass, percussion, and even cello &#8211;coupled with homespun harmonies that are ethereal.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI play violin and sing,\u201d said Gose. \u201cNoah and I work on a lot of lyrics together. Then, the three of us work a lot on the harmonies. There are a lot of three-part harmonies.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The three band members have a long history together.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cOur moms were Catholic school teachers,\u201d said Gose. \u201cWe grew up in the same neighborhood. Noah and I met when we were 14 and in middle school.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe went to Catholic school \u2013 Pope Pius \u2013 and there was not a lot of funding for arts. Noah and I would play in class \u2013 Noah on piano and guitar and me on violin and guitar.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe met Andy in high school. We were all in choir together. For a while, we were in a band with three or four others.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAfter COVID, Noah and I did shows as a duo. Then, Andy rejoined in 2022.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The trio has been going strong ever since.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cNoah and I went to the University of Nebraska,\u201d said Gose. \u201cI majored in music and psychology. Noah majored in music composition. After graduation, we went full-time with the band.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe also taught music lessons in our home. We toured all of 2022 and then stopped teaching. We made albums all along. \u2018Dear Meadowlark\u2019 is our fifth.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Wildwoods\u2019 album discography includes \u201cSweet Nostalgia\u201d (2017), \u201cBirdie &amp; Goose\u2019 (2017), \u201cAcross a Midwest Sky\u201d (2019), and \u201cFoxfield Saint John\u201d (2023).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Then came \u201cDear Meadowlark\u201d \u2013 a sparkling batch of songs by The Wildwoods, who were finalists in both the FreshGrass Band Competition and the Gems on VHS \u201cGems in the Rough\u201d contest in 2023.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cBen Brodin produced it at his studio \u2013Hand Branch Studio in Omaha,\u201d said Gose. \u201cWe\u2019ve done all our albums with him.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Brodin, who has worked with Conor Oberst, Pete Yorn, Azure Ray, Justin Townes Earl, Cat Piss and Orenda Fink, was a big contributor to \u201cDear Meadowlark.\u201d\u00a0 In addition to being the producer, he engineered the album and played organ, steel guitar, and vibraphone.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been recording with him since high school,\u201d said Gose. \u201cWe started working with Ben because he was the house producer at Arc Studio in Omaha at that time.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe recorded the new album in March 2024. We took eight songs into the studio and, at the last minute, added a couple more.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe finished mixing in June 2024 and then sat on it for a while to wait for marketing. It was released in April 2025.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The album has special meaning for the trio.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cOur last album, \u2018Foxfield St. John,\u2019 had songs that were inspired by our time on the road \u2013 the places we went and the people we met,\u201d said Gose.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe new album, \u2018Dear Meadowlark,\u2019 is more about our life in Nebraska. Our other albums were about travel and people.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis album is a love letter to Nebraska.
