{"id":37373,"date":"2025-11-06T09:48:52","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T14:48:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=37373"},"modified":"2025-11-06T09:49:55","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T14:49:55","slug":"on-stage-bella-white-brings-americana-to-philly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/?p=37373","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Bella White brings Americana to Philly"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff,<\/strong> <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_20980\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20980\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20980\" src=\"https:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/561154847_18531716545042653_7439601960947749454_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bella White<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bella White is a Canadian singer-songwriter who combines the old school music of bluegrass and Appalachian tunes with modern-day influences of Americana and singer-songwriter genres.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In the spring, she toured across America with her \u201cSpring 2025 Red Rhododendron Tour.\u201d\u00a0 The single \u201cRhododendron\u201d was released in October 2022 and included the following year on her sophomore album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Now, White is back touring North America with her \u201cRed Rhododendron Tour Part II.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The spring tour hit New York and D.C. but skipped Philadelphia. This time, White is bringing her tour to Philly for a show at MilkBoy Philadelphia (1100 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, 215- 925-6455, <a id=\"OWA312b7fa4-28d8-a45f-67b0-7bc48c1cbcf7\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.milkboyphilly.com\/\">www.milkboyphilly.com<\/a>) on November 9.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">White self-released her debut album, \u201cJust Like Leaving,\u201d in 2020. She then signed with Rounder Records, and the label re-released the LP in 2021.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">She followed with two more releases so far on Rounder \u2013 the \u201cAmong Other Things\u201d album in April 2023 and the \u201cFive For Silver\u201d EP last year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI recorded my first album in 2020 \u2013 right before COVID hit,\u201d said White, during a phone interview last week from her home in New Orleans.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt was tough during the pandemic, but I put it out anyway. I felt like it was a time when it connected with people. I put it out independently and relied on a radio campaign and social media.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe people at Rounder found it and liked it. They picked it up and re-released it in spring 2021. Rounder is a very iconic label so that was a big deal for me.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">White, who is in her mid-20s, has lived the life of a musical nomad \u2013 starting with her childhood days in western Canada \u2013 in Calgary, the home of the world-famous Calgary Stampede.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI grew in Calgary and then moved to Boston after high school,\u201d said White. \u201cI was in Boston for a while and then moved to Nashville.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAfter Nashville, I went back to western Canada \u2013 but not Calgary. My parents had moved to British Columbia \u2013 to Vancouver Island \u2013 so I went there for a while. Then, I moved to New Orleans about three years ago.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">White\u2019s country roots go way back. She got her love of country music from her father &#8212; a native Virginian who played in bluegrass bands ever since she was a little child.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI first got into music from my dad who played music my whole life \u2013 traditional bluegrass music,\u201d said White.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI really loved all types of music when I was growing up. I liked Elvis and Michael Jackson. I was a musically inspired kid.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI got my first guitar when I was around eight or nine. I always loved to sing, and I got to a point where I could do it totally independently.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI was really keen on learning it \u2013 from my dad and self-taught. I also went to bluegrass class \u2013 including one from Molly Tuttle.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">White was a dedicated student going back to her pre-teen years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019d say that I\u2019m predominantly self-taught,\u201d said White. \u201cI always played traditional bluegrass. I used it as a basis for learning the instrument.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAfter bluegrass and country, I got more into folk music and singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">It all came together when White was living in Boston.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI recorded \u2018Just Like Learning\u2019 at a studio in Vermont \u2013 Guilford Sound. I was living in Boston at the time. I was feeding off the folk program at Berklee (School of Music in Boston) even though I wasn\u2019t a student there.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">White recorded her sophomore album, \u201cAmong Other Things,\u201d on the other coast at Fivestar Studios, a studio in the shadow of downtown Los Angeles.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI cut the album in spring 2022 in Topanga Canyon,\u201d said White. \u201cJonathan Wilson was my producer.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Wilson is an A-list producer who has been the producer for albums by Father John Misty, Dawes, Angel Olsen and Margo Price.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe cut the whole album in about two weeks,\u201d said White. \u201cWe did almost all of it to tape. We recorded each of the songs in just a few takes.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The album has a very real vibe \u2013 nothing sugar-coated. The songs are sorrowful, gritty and introspective.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Following its 2023 release on Rounder Records,\u00a0\u201cAmong Other Things\u201d\u00a0received critical acclaim with\u00a0Rolling Stone\u00a0referring to the album as \u201cSublime Appalachian heartbreak.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI was just inspired to be authentic,\u201d said White. \u201cI used my life as a creative outlet.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">White\u2019s latest release, the \u201cFive For Silver\u201d EP dropped in the middle of 2024.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0\u201cFive For Silver\u201d\u00a0EP featured White reimagining songs by Lucinda Williams, Jeff Tweedy, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris and Ted Lucas.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI have a new album that is in the works,\u201d said White. \u201cIt\u2019s already done. It will come out next year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cRight now, I\u2019m touring as a trio with Gina Leslie on bass and Sam Gelban on drums. Photo credit: DescribeTheFauna<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Boney James is an internationally acclaimed smooth jazz saxophonist who visits the Delaware Valley several times each year to perform for his legion of area fans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On November 8, James will treat fans to music from his recently released album, \u201cSlow Burn,\u201d in a concert at the Scottish Rite Auditorium (315 White Horse Pike, Collingswood, New Jersey, <a href=\"http:\/\/scottishriteauditorium.com\/\">scottishriteauditorium.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI released the new album last October,\u201d said James, during a phone interview from his home in Los Angeles.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been on the road pretty much ever since \u2013 and I will be for the rest of the year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album has been doing really well. The single, \u2018All I Want Is You,\u2019 went Top 10 immediately in the R&amp;B charts.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Another single from \u201cSlow Burn\u201d \u2013 \u201cSlide\u201d &#8212; hit number one on the\u00a0Billboard\u00a0Smooth Jazz Airplay chart.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The phrase \u201cSlow Burn\u201d is described as a feeling that grows with a slow but deliberate intensity.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">It is a good description of James\u2019 music, career and the vibe of his newest album.\u202fThe iconic four-time Grammy-nominated saxophonist\u2019s 19th album is another deliberate step on his creative journey.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Featuring legendary Jazz\/R&amp;B artists Marcus Miller and Cory Henry, the record also spotlights R&amp;B\u2019s next superstar &#8212; October London, who handles the vocals on \u201cAll I Want Is You.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With 10 songs &#8212; eight originals plus homages to Herbie Hancock and Stanley Turrentine \u2013 \u201cSlow Burn\u201d is James at his best.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The track, \u201cArcadia,\u201d features Marcus Miller while \u201cButterfly\u201d features Cory Henry and Marcus Miller. Rick Braun is the guest artist on \u201cSugar.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSlow Burn\u2019 was released on October 18, 2024, by Concord Jazz.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAt the beginning of last year, my label signaled that it was time for another album,\u201d said James, a saxophonist, songwriter, record producer \u2013 and one of America\u2019s most popular soul, jazz and R&amp;B saxophonists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI worked on it from April through August and then it came out in October. Most of the album was recorded at my home studio \u2013 \u2018The Backyard.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI also did some recording at East-West Studio here in L.A. I cut 10 songs. Then, I do the editing while I\u2019m working. It\u2019s a lot of work producing an album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve released a couple singles. One single has an R&amp;B vocal. Two are instrumentals and another will be released later this month.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI don\u2019t choose which songs are to be singles. I leave that up to the radio team. I love every song on there.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">James has a tight band with a drummer and a guitarist in the line-up for more than two decades.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe current live set has six songs off the \u2018Slow Burn\u2019 album,\u201d said James. \u201cI don\u2019t change the set list once we\u2019ve started the tour.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI stick with it all the way.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve released 19 albums so I can\u2019t get all the music into one show. I try to play everyone\u2019s favorites.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSome of the must-play songs are \u2018Sweet Thing,\u2019 \u2018Grazing in the Grass\u2019 and \u2018After the Rain.\u2019 I\u2019m always trying to pay my homage to R&amp;B. At the same time, I just try to make my music individual to me.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">According to James, who lives in L.A. with wife, director Lily Mariye, \u201cI wake up each day and try to play a little better. To quote the cellist Pablo Casals \u2013 \u2018I think I\u2019m making progress.\u2019 I am really proud of my playing on this new record. She moves too fast to be pinned down. She\u2019s a great composer and singer\/songwriter who has shared stages with Robert Cray, Bon Jovi, and Gregg Allman.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Her music is touched by genius and always comes straight from the heart. Cotton fuses rock, soul, gospel, and jazz, for a stunning performance. Her latest EP reimagines Charley Pride classics.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Cotton is very strong as a singer, songwriter and performer. She is also very strong at dealing with life\u2019s challenges.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">More than a decade ago, five months into her pregnancy Cotton lost the twins she\u2019d conceived through in-vitro fertilization. The band\u2019s latest album, \u201cInto the Morning,\u201d dropped over the summer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Sug Daniels\u00a0is a Delaware-born, Philadelphia-based ukulele player, singer-songwriter, storyteller, and producer who is using the tools around her to capture the emotions of an era. It was built in 1850 and enlarged in 1902-03.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The performance will take place in Glen Foerd\u2019s Gilded Age mansion\u2019s second-floor art gallery, offering an immersive experience where early cinema meets contemporary live music.
