Knauer Performing Arts Center (226 North High Street, West Chester,<a id=\"OWA360fadc4-4b4c-6db7-a18d-d79aabcf1c8c\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uptownwestchester.org\/\">www.uptownwestchester.org<\/a>) back in October.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">But fate had other plans for the versatile and very talented entertainer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay got a featured role in a hit Off-Broadway musical and was forced to postpone her solo music performance in West Chester &#8212; postpone not cancel.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show has been rescheduled for February 7 at 7:30 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cUnfortunately, we had to cancel some shows in October,\u201d said McKay, during a phone interview Wednesday night from her home in Northeast Pennsylvania.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe told the people who had bought tickets that we would have to reschedule. People are very understanding.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">People who have heard McKay perform live know that the show she delivers on Saturday will have been worth the wait.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay is a singer\/songwriter\/multi-instrumentalist who began her career as an entertainer singing in New York clubs in the late 1900s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">She is no stranger to New York\u2019s stages \u2013 Broadway and Off-Broadway.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On Broadway, she\u00a0won a Theatre\u00a0World\u00a0Award for her portrayal of Polly Peachum in\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0Threepenny\u00a0Opera.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">She also\u00a0co-created and starred in the award-winning Off-Broadway hit\u00a0\u201cOld Hats,\u201d\u00a0and has\u00a0written and produced musical biographies around a compelling gallery of ladies\u00a0\u2013 from\u00a0environmental pioneer\u00a0Rachel Carson to the life,\u00a0conviction, and execution at San Quentin\u00a0of\u00a0underdog\u00a0Barbara Graham.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In fall of 2025, McKay was on a New York stage with the Atlantic Theater Company for the world premiere of Oscar winner\u00a0Ethan Coen\u00a0(Fargo,\u00a0No Country For Old Men)\u2019s\u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s Love!\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show, which also featured Delaware\u2019s stage and screen start Aubrey Plaza, was scheduled to run through November 9 and then expended until November 22.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt was a beautiful thing to do,\u201d said McKay. \u201cThere was a lot happening. It flew by every night. Audiences had a good time. And it was great working with Aubrey.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After \u201cLet\u2019s Love!\u201d ended, McKay immediately hit the road with Aimee Mann and Ted Leo\u2019s Christmas show.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe Christmas tour was great too,\u201d said McKay. \u201cWe went all the way up the Northeast and then out to the snowy Midwest. It flew by.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Currently, she is playing all the songs from her recently released album, \u201cGee Whiz: The Get Away From Me Demos,\u201d an 18-track collection of previously unissued and self-produced demos on two LPs presaging McKay\u2019s critically acclaimed debut album, out now on Omnivore Recordings.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album is out on vinyl for the first time,\u201d said McKay.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s a double album on vinyl and is also has been released on CD with three bonus tracks.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cGee Whiz: The Get Away From Me Demos\u201d collects McKay\u2019s recordings which became that landmark album (\u201cGet Away From Me\u201d), composed, performed, and produced by Nellie, and sequenced identically to the original record.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">As a bonus, the CD and digital programs also contain three very early, previously unissued tracks.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Mastered by multiple Grammy-winner Michael Graves, these revelatory demos show how complete the album was in its initial stages and brings new insight on the creative process from one of music\u2019s most creative artists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe had the demos of all these songs so why not celebrate the 21st\u00a0anniversary of the original release,\u201d said McKay. \u201c<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe three bonus tracks are little homemade things that I made,\u201d said McKay. \u201cI recorded them at the time I was playing piano bars.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s nice that we got in touch with Omnivore. They also re-released \u2018Hey Guys Watch This,\u2019 (McKay\u2019s most recent previous album).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album of demos was remixed in L.A. by Grammy Award winner Michael Graves. He made it sound great.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u2019s debut album, \u201cGet Away From Me,\u201d was released on Columbia Records in 2004. She first played shows in this area back in 2004 to accompany the release of that album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">When she was getting started,\u00a0McKay made music that bridged the gap between jazz and hip-hop \u2014 a combination not often heard in today\u2019s pop music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The versatile performer\u00a0was born in London and raised in New York, the Pacific Northwest and Pennsylvania\u2019s Pocono Manor. When she was still in her teens, she was living in her own apartment in New York \u2014 at the edge of Harlem at 123rd and Amsterdam.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI love New York,\u201d said McKay. \u201cI lived in Harlem. When people hear Harlem, they think it\u2019s a dangerous place but it\u2019s not bad.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay, who attended school at Pocono Mountain Junior and Senior High, learned to play a variety of instruments including piano, cello, timpani, vibes, triangle and saxophone. Her main concentration has always been on keyboards.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI played with the East Stroudsburg University Jazz Ensemble when I was still in high school,\u201d said\u00a0McKay. \u201cPatrick Dorian, a music professor at ESU, gave me my first formal jazz training. He taught me a lot about composition.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Eventually,\u00a0McKay\u00a0began playing gigs at New York piano bars such as Don\u2019t Tell Mama\u2019s, Stonewall Bistro, Psychic Cafe, Regents, Rose\u2019s Turn, and Mozart Caf\u00e9 (where she was canned because she liked to play Christmas songs in August when people weren\u2019t sick of them). A record deal with Columbia followed and the rest is history.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0treats fans to live renditions of classic songs that are commonly referred to as standards. Her set list might also feature a Beatles song or even the Frank Zappa classic tune, \u201cHungry Freaks Daddy.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Unlike most of many of her previous albums, \u201cHey Guys, Watch This,\u201d featured McKay\u00a0as a composer instead of song stylist.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis is my first album of all original songs in 15 years,\u201d said\u00a0McKay. \u201cThe oldest song is from 15 years ago \u2013 \u2018did I catch you dreaming.\u2019\u00a0 It was inspired by my dog who was sleeping.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The most recent one is \u2018badumbump.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThere are 15 songs on the album. I had a lot of songs, and I chose these 15 because I was running out of time.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0recorded the album in several locations \u2013 mainly in the hills of the Mountaineer State.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Recorded in Charleston, West Virginia with The Carpenter Ants and a roving retinue of musical compadres, \u201cHey Guys, Watch This\u201d traces the haunted sounds of Appalachia to a renaissance of revelry.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0released an EP titled, \u201cBagatelles,\u201d in 2019. The album before that was \u201cSister Orchid\u201d in 2018.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSister Orchid\u201d includes timeless gems such as \u201cWillow Weep for Me,\u201d which was first recorded in 1932 by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and later was a hit for Billie Holiday in the mid-1950s; \u201cGeorgia on My Mind,\u201d a Hoagy Carmichael song from 1930 that was a hit for Ray Charles in 1960; and \u201cIn a Sentimental Mood,\u201d which was penned and performed by Duke Ellington in 1935.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On\u00a0McKay\u2019s website, \u201cSister Orchid,\u201d which was released May 2018 on Palmetto Records, had this description \u2013 \u201cConjuring the image of a lonely all-night truck stop along Highway 1 on the California coast, all but lost in the fog that comes creeping along the shoreline\u2026\u00a0this album speaks of the night, the outsider, the plaintive wail of those lost at sea.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201c\u2018Sister Orchid\u2019\u00a0was conceived in solitude,\u00a0executed in darkness. It\u00a0comes from a place of quiet, a world of low lights and cool drinks, up against a hard wall.\u00a0An oasis of hungry eyes and easy promises, warm as a biscuit, the kind of place your mother warned you against.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSister Orchid\u201d\u00a0was\u00a0McKay\u2019s seventh label release. Her previous albums include\u00a0\u201cObligatory Villagers,\u201d \u201cNormal as Blueberry\u00a0Pie,\u201d \u201cHome Sweet Mobile Home\u201d and \u201cMy Weekly Reader.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0is like a modern-day \u201cRenaissance Woman.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Other projects included \u201cThe Big Molinsky \u2013 Considering Joan Rivers,\u201d and \u201cA GIRL NAMED BILL \u2013 The Life and Times of Billy Tipton,\u201d which was named one of the \u201cBest Concerts of the Year\u201d by\u00a0The New York Times.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u2019s screen work includes roles\u00a0in\u00a0\u201cPS I Love You\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cDowntown Express.\u201d She contributed movie\u00a0music to\u00a0\u201cRumor Has It,\u201d \u201cMonster-in-Law,\u201d \u201cGasland,\u201d \u201cLast Holiday,\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cPrivate Life.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In the television world, her music has been heard on\u00a0\u201cMad Men,\u201d \u201cBoardwalk Empire,\u201d \u201cWeeds,\u201d \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy,\u201d \u201cNCIS,\u201d \u201cNurse Jackie,\u201d and\u00a0\u201cSMILF.\u201d Additionally,\u00a0McKay\u2019s writing has appeared in\u00a0The Onion,\u00a0Interview, and\u00a0The New York Times Book Review.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay\u00a0also has devoted much of her life to projects combating animal abuse.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">She is a recipient of PETA\u2019s\u00a0Humanitarian Award and The Humane Society\u2019s Doris Day Music Award\u00a0in recognition of her dedication to animal rights.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve been a vegetarian since I was eight,\u201d said\u00a0McKay. \u201cI\u2019ve been vegan since 2004. Non-violence begins on your plate.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With her current shows, McKay is showing that \u201cold\u201d can be \u201cnew\u201d again.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to be playing the whole \u2018Gee Whiz\u2019 album,\u201d said McKay. \u201cWe\u2019re playing them in the same order as on the album \u2013 and we\u2019ll have visual accompaniment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re doing it just for this tour. I thought \u2013 why not have some fun with this show. We play all of \u2018Gee Whiz.\u2019 We\u2019ll also play some songs from other albums depending on the audience and the room.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">McKay will be part of a special event later this month.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">She will be one of the performers at the \u201cBlonde on Blonde Concert\u201d at Bob Dylan Center. The one-night-only event will take place on Friday,\u00a0February\u00a020 at\u00a0Cain\u2019s Ballroom in Tulsa.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to the Dylan show in Tulsa,\u201d said McKay. \u201cThere are a lot of great musicians on the show. The band is celebrating with a vinyl release show at Steel City Coffeehouse (203 Bridge Street, Phoenixville, <a id=\"OWA98d736a5-48db-9dcf-db07-cdeb133e87b4\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.steelcityphx.com\/\">www.steelcityphx.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Jefferson\u00a0Berry\u00a0&amp; the\u00a0UAC have spent more than a decade establishing themselves as one of the Philly area\u2019s top folk-rock\/folk bands.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">T<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">he group released its fourth studio album,\u00a0\u201cSoon!\u201d on April 16, 2021. The band\u2019s previous albums were \u201cGuitar on the River\u201d (2016), \u201cThe Habit\u201d (2018) and \u201cDouble Deadbolt Logic\u201d (2020).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Berry\u00a0and his band got even more prolific after \u201cSoon!\u201d \u00a0&#8211;culminating with \u201cBorn Into A Blizzard\u201d in early 2025.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis is our fourth album in five years \u2013 and all of them have charted,\u201d said\u00a0Berry, during a phone interview from his home in the Fairmount section of North Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe UAC are really some of the best players in Philadelphia. We recorded the album at Kawari Studio in Wyncote with Matt Muir, who is a great engineer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe started early last year \u2013 March 2024. I produced the album and it took about six months. We also did some award-winning videos.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe won Music Video of the Year at the Jersey Shore Film Fest with \u2018First Purple Light.\u2019 It was the first ever music video to use AI.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band\u2019s string of video awards continued in 2025 with Best Music Video at Black Lion Indie Film Festival for \u201cGuitar on the River\u201d and two top places at the California Music Video &amp; Film Awards 2025 &#8212; Best Lyrics and Verse for \u201cToo Old to Matter\u201d and Best Animation in a Music Video for \u201cFirst Purple Light.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On August 1, 2025, Jefferson\u00a0Berry\u00a0&amp; the Urban Acoustic Coalition signed with Warner Bros\u2019 label Deko Entertainment.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Berry and his band joined a roster that features Ten Years After, Slash, The Guess Who, Rik Emmett, Brain Setzer Orchestra, Sass Jordan, Kasim Sultan and Gil Evans Orchestra along with deceased legends such as John Entwistle, Michael Hutchence and John Lodge.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Berry\u00a0grew up in Southern California and is a graduate of University of California Santa Cruz, a school whose sports teams are nicknamed, \u201cBanana Slugs.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI grew up in what used to be Malibu,\u201d said\u00a0Berry.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">He eventually landed in the Philadelphia area where he became part of Philly\u2019s folk\/rock\/Americana scene.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Berry\u2019s website presented the history behind\u00a0UAC:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIn 2006, at around 3 a.m. at the Falcon Ridge Festival,\u00a0Jefferson\u00a0and his banjo playing brother Hank were playing a Hillbilly version of \u201cWhite Room\u201d by Cream. In fest-jam fashion, each vocal verse was separated by an instrumental-lead verse. Out and of the shadows and into the light of the campfire came this guy with a mandolin and long red hair, playing the song\u2019s iconic Clapton lead pretty much verbatim.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAs the sun was coming up,\u00a0Jefferson\u00a0asked Bud Burroughs if he wanted to start a band, and Hippies and Hillbillies was born. The album Drumless America was recorded in Bud\u2019s living room: a quirky mix of covers ranging from Robert Earl Keen and Townes Van Zandt to Neil Young and U2, the show and CD was fun for some but considered blasphemous at the bluegrass festivals the band played.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cBud and\u00a0Jefferson\u2019s next venture involved\u00a0Jefferson\u2019s daughter.\u00a0 Briana\u00a0Berry\u00a0and her sister were raised at the summer festivals\u2014Kerrville, Falcon Ridge, XFS and Philly.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Berry\u2019s 2009 album, \u201cFairmount Station,\u201d featured songs written by Briana and her dad. It was promoted nationally to radio by Powderfinger Promotions and charted fairly high for an independent release on the folk charts. The band played X-Fest and the Philadelphia Folk Festival that year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Urban Acoustic Coalitionmade its debut in 2014 with the release of \u201cGuitar on the River.\u201d Again, Bud Burroughs served as the music director for a collection of\u00a0Berry\u2019s city-themed songs.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Recorded at MelodyVision by Rodney Whittenberg, the album created sessions that grew the band.\u00a0Jefferson\u00a0Berry\u00a0and the Urban Acoustic Coalition played the Camp Stage at the Philadelphia Folk Festival that year with a Coalition of players from Boris Garcia, Bad Sister and Beaufort.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This was an example of the \u201ccoalition\u201d aspect of the band, an ethic that allowed players to keep their other projects alive while clearing dates with the\u00a0UAC\u00a0periodically.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Berry\u00a0said, \u201cWe\u2019re mini-Americana folk-rock with a couple jazzy numbers. We\u2019ve been called the Steely Dan of folk music. We\u2019re storytelling with acoustic instruments.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe core of UAC is Bud Burroughs on mandolin and keyboards, Uncle Mike Damora on bass, and Dave Brown on everything &#8212; banjo, lap steel, guitars and fretless bass.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been together for 20 years. Right now, we also have Theresa Ratliff on vocals and Adam Stranburg on drums.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cBorn Into A Blizzard\u201d displays the diversity that is contemporary folk music today. As with previous releases, the songs on\u00a0\u201cBorn<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Into a Blizzard\u201d\u00a0touch on themes of city living and these strange times.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The indulgences of our screen time (\u201cHow Could You Think That\u201d), the need to start over (\u201cLeaving Santa Maria\u201d), the homeless condition of the once successful (\u201cSleeping in Public\u201d), and the lost orientation of street people (\u201cSand in My Shoes\u201d) offer the songwriter\u2019s observations of how things are these days.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The album does balance out however with fun tunes about summer days on the river (\u201cGuitar on the\u00a0River\u201d), the way we treat our heroes (\u201cPhilly Eats its Own\u201d) and\u00a0Berry\u2019s father\u2019s version of the day he was born (\u201cBorn on Payday\u201d).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Musically, the album is genre defiant with songs ranging from the samba jazz of \u201cThirty Miles to the Beach\u201d to the pure folk of \u201cThis Dawn of Mine.\u201d\u00a0Berry\u00a0continues to juxtapose divergent styles and genres with his songwriting and storytelling to offer a refreshing take on folk music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s Americana,\u201d said\u00a0Berry. \u201cIt\u2019s acoustic rock. Basically, I\u2019m an urban storyteller.
