The Brandywine River Museum is hosting a five-part lecture series on American art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that starts Friday at 10 a.m.<\/p><\/div>\n

Five iconic works at the Brandywine River Museum promise insight about the times in which they took shape, courtesy of an upcoming lecture series.<\/p>\n

Starting this Friday at 10 a.m., the five-part series, a college-level introduction to American art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, will devote one session to each of five paintings.<\/p>\n

The works to be discussed are Alexander Gardner\u2019s\u00a0Home of a Rebel Sharp Shooter<\/i>\u00a0(1863), Feb. 1; \u00a0Thomas Eakins\u2019s\u00a0The Gross Clinic<\/i>\u00a0(1875), Feb. 8; \u00a0Grant Wood\u2019s\u00a0American Gothic<\/i>\u00a0(1930), Feb.15;\u00a0Walker Evans\u2019\u00a0Sharecropper\u2019s Daughter, Hale County Alabama<\/i>\u00a0(1936),\u00a0 Feb. 22; and \u00a0Andrew Wyeth\u2019s\u00a0Christina\u2019s World<\/i>\u00a0(1948), March 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we ask the right questions, works of art can tell us a great deal about the society that created them.\u00a0 They are gateways to understanding life in another era,\u201d says Amanda C. Burdan, the museum\u2019s assistant curator, who will present the lectures. \u201cEach of these works is a reflection of the period in which it was created.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tickets for the series \u2013 $50 for adults and $40 for members \u2013 include museum admission. Reservations can be made online\u00a0or by phone at 610-388-8326. Tickets for individual lectures are $15 for adults, $12 for members, and may be purchased at the museum on the day of the program. In the event of a weather cancellation, the scheduled lecture will be moved to the following week.<\/p>\n

The Brandywine River Museum is located on U.S. 1 in Chadds Ford.\u00a0 It is open daily, except Christmas, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults; $8 for seniors; $6 for students and children ages 6 to 12; and free for members and children under 6.\u00a0 Museum admission is free on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to noon from Jan. 13 through Nov. 24 (except during the Antiques Show on Memorial Day weekend).
