Coatesville thanks you!”

The setup, sandwiched behind the Gordon Education Center, was given to the city by the school district about three years ago, Hess said. Now that the building is being used by Lincoln University for college classes, the equipment was not only in the way but was in danger of being torn down. Hess said the playground equipment would be welcomed across the street at Ash Park, and she sought – and received – assistance from people with muscle, know-how, and heavy equipment.

Three companies – Keares Electric, The Coatesville Solar Initiative, and Mid-Atlantic Forestry Equipment – stepped up to help as well as David’s Drive 831, an area nonprofit started in 2010 in memory of David B. Turner Jr. who died unexpectedly at the age of 20 and was committed to helping others.

Hess said one glitch occurred a couple weeks ago when the volunteers arrived to do some dismantling and several pieces had been removed. Hess said a Lincoln employee who knew that the university wanted the city-owned equipment out of its way received a go-ahead to move it from someone who did not know that Coatesville already had a plan in motion. The equipment was returned, she said.

As long as people show up on Tuesday, the only remaining ups and downs will be grateful children using the slide, she said.

Help needed to carry equipment from Gordon Education Center to Ash Park An effort to rescue some unused playground equipment – an initiative that’s had its share of ups and downs – will culminate on Tuesday at 9 a.m., said Marie Hess, who heads the city’s Park and Recreation Commission.
