Coatesville makes the most of one hit by beating Boyertown 1-0\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

BOYERTOWN\u2014Baseball is a funny game and Coatesville head coach Hal Ziegler has seen his share of head scratching moments in his many years behind the Red Raiders bench.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\u2019s been no secret that all season long the strength of his club has been the outstanding pitching they have gotten.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When it comes to the post season, pitching is what can make the difference between cleaning out the locker room and advancing to play Penncrest on Wednesday afternoon in the second round of the PIAA District One tournament.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Boyertown, who won the Pioneer Athletic Conference title last Wednesday when they defeated 2011 Pennsylvania state runner up Spring-Ford, has built a reputation over the years of being able to match the arms with all comers and Monday\u2019s tilt was no exception.<\/p>\n

Coatesville left hander Brian Brown was dominating as he truck out ten Bears<\/p><\/div>\n

Bears ace Dan Woodley was brilliant as he worked his way through the Red Raiders line up, relying a his fast ball and a curve ball that was flat out nasty, allowing just one base hit as he fanned 11 Coatesville hitters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Red Raiders base hit came off the bat of designated hitter T.J. Mayo as he took a 2-1 fastball on the outside part of the plate and drilled into left field to give the visitors a lead off runner for the first time in the game.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHe came inside with a curve ball the pitch before,\u201d said Mayo. \u201cHe put the fast ball on the outer part of the plate and I just took it the other way. This was a statement game for us, that we are for real and confidence in each other that we are going to find a way to win.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ziegler wasted no time in calling to the bench and inserted senior speedster Jevon Medley to run for Mayo, which paid huge dividends two pitches later as a Woodley pick off throw got by first basemen Austin Heimbach and rattled up the line along the fence allowing Medley to race all the way around to third with no one out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought about stopping at second,\u201d said Medley. \u201cBut I saw the coach swinging his arms and yelling for me to keep coming so I juts kicked into high gear and knew I better make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Medley anxiously waiting for a chance to scurry the last 90 feet, shortstop Tom Stumm had worked a 3-0 count, before Woodley delivered a strike making it 3-1.<\/p>\n

As Woodley came through his wind up, Medley bolted down the line towards Stumm who had squared to put down a suicide squeeze bunt, which he dropped down the first base line going with the outside curve ball, scoring Medley with the games only run.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to put it straight down,\u201d said Stumm. \u201cWhen the pitch was outside I just went with it and put it down the line. This is a big win for us as we have found ways to beat ourselves at times, to execute and get the win with one hit is huge.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere guy was pitching very well and I had to take a chance right there to get that run,\u201d added Ziegler. \u201cIt\u2019s a matter of knowing my team and the players that were involved and I knew Stumm could get it done and had total confidence in him.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One run was all that Coatesville (11-10) and sophomore ace left-hander Brian Brown would need as he retired the Bears in order in each of the last four innings, after allowing back-to back singles in the first inning.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Brown, who only used 84 pitches in the complete game win, was dominant as he mixed his fastball with a great change up, which kept the Boyertown hitter off balance all game, which only took 74 minutes to play.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of an advantage to go up against a team that hasn\u2019t seen me pitch before,\u201d said Brown, who also picked off a Bear runner following the only hit allowed after the third inning. \u201cRight we have to win each game so whether we are familiar or not we have to be ready to bring our A game every time out.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Next up for the South #12 seeded Red Raiders South is a match up with South #4 seed Penncrest at the Lions on Wednesday at 4 pm. The winner will advance to play the winner of the (N1 seed) Council Rock North vs. (N9 seed) North Penn game on May 25th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n
