A much needed way of communication opened up with your initiative and I am wishing you all the success!

The reason of my letter is the snow and icy roads.

What a surprise, huh? We built/purchased our first dream home in Kings Grant, Caln Township by Dewey Homes, put down the much-needed down payment and paying the mortgage ever since. We are one of those young professionals who moved into the area several years ago when so many new developments were being built, some finished and dedicated so the township takes care of the snow removal and maintenance and some not. Ours is one of those which were not dedicated since the economy downturn came, builder unable to sell, no people are getting approved for mortgages by bank and probably for hundreds others reasons.

We also pay all our taxes as a good citizen would do like state, local, federal, school, property and list could go on and on. You would rightfully assume the township/government would provide basic maintenance like snow removal in timely manner avoid accidents and safety hazards. Unfortunately, this is not the case with Caln Township.

Basically, the township and the builder are playing the back and forth game who is responsible for removing (and paying !) the snow. Since our roads are not dedicated, the township says it is the builder’s responsibility to clean our roads. The catch is the builder is mostly nowhere to be found, non-responsive and we, the residents, are left out in the snow (literally) at every single snow storm since 2005! (Our development started in 2005.) The current process is we get snowed in, nobody comes to clean the roads, we need to call the township to complain since the builder was a no-show, then the township and builder play the game who needs to do what and when.

It’s a commonly known fact all builders require put down a certain amount of money (in escrow) to the township where they have a planned and approved development to be built as a security fund in case something goes wrong (e.g. builder goes bankrupt and development is not finished) to make sure there are enough funds to finish roads, sewers etc. Where is the money now? Why can not Caln township use the funds to dedicate the roads and officially make them one of theirs? It’s obvious the builder is no longer selling and building homes since 2009.

Kings Grant’s lots are 80% sold out which means 88 properties are paying taxes to Caln Township. Residents no longer want to hear excuses why our roads are not maintained, we all need solutions why we can not have clean roads in the past eight years?

Why can not Caln Township step up and do the right thing for the people who are living here and paying taxes here? Our current and past Home Owners Association boards have been trying to find solutions for years where we get the response it’s under process and should happen, but every winter, every snowstorm is just another mess where nobody, nor the township, nor the builder wants to pick up the bill, remove the snow and ice etc.

How many snowstorms and years are still coming until we have a solution here?

Teri Viljoen

Kings Grant resident,

Caln

To The Editor, Thank you so much for adding a great value with your online local news, The Coatesville Times!
