Board Chairwoman Partice Proctor, Board Supervisor Arlin Yoder and Board Supervisor Yolanda Beattie review township matters.

VALLEY – Township supervisors grappled Tuesday with concerns about state mandates requiring the township inspect residential septic systems — something not currently being done.

The board examined an unenforced ordinance regarding sewer maintenance.  The ordinance is a part of the Department of Environmental Protection’s sewer management program; it requires all residents with an on-lot septic system to have an inspection within one year of the adoption of the ordinance and every three years thereafter.

Though the board expressed concerned over the lack of state funding for the ordinance, Board Supervisor Kathy O’Doherty reminded them of the importance of enforcing the ordinance.

“We’re already out of compliance, we need to get in compliance for our sake,” said O’Doherty.

In an effort to alleviate costs for residents, the board acknowledged that they would need to bid a contract out for the inspections.

“We’re going to have to adopt a program where we bid it out,” said Board Supervisor Arlin Yoder.

The board resolved to start looking into companies with the necessary sewer enforcement officer training to complete the inspections.

Police Chief Joseph Friel came before the board to confirm a date to interview new part-time police officers for the township.  The board decided to schedule the interviews for Mar. 19 at the township building.  Chief Friel also mentioned that the town watch would soon begin a membership drive; anyone interested is welcome to attend their next meeting on Feb. 29.

The board also announced the dates for several community events.  The township community cleanup day is set for Apr. 21 and the annual children’s Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Apr. 6 at the Westwood Fire Co.

The Valley Board of Supervisors will hold their next meeting on Mar. 6.
