City extends invitation to ‘Celebrate Coatesville’

Full day of activities planned around the Chesco Grand Prix

The city is inviting residents and visitors to “Celebrate Coatesville” on Sunday.

“Celebrate Coatesville” is offering activities that complement the Chesco Grand Prix, which will hit the city on Sunday.

A variety of activities is planned in conjunction with the Chesco Grand Prix, an annual festival that celebrates cycling, showcases Chester County, and promotes the National Velodrome, which is being planned for Coatesville.

The city is partnering with the Rotary Club of Coatesville and the Road Cycling League to create a full-day schedule of family-friendly offerings. Beginning at noon there will be food, craft booths, games, rides, and other entertainment for all ages.

Professional, amateur, and celebrity bike races and children’s bike races and rodeos will begin at 1 p.m. and run throughout the day leading up to a fireworks display. A VIP tent for sponsors will be set up by Victory Brewing Company on the bicycle race route near the start/finish line.

All proceeds from the day will go back into the Coatesville community to support local organizations such as the Coatesville Senior Center, Coatesville Library, Community Dental, Art Partners, Bridge of Hope LCC, Salvation Army, Coatesville Youth Initiative, Meals on Wheels, Coatesville Community Gardens, scholarships and other initiatives.

The Coatesville Criterium, which will feature spectator-friendly, competitive biking, is part of the Chesco Grand Prix, which begins Thursday in Oxford and concludes July 8 in Marshallton. The Chesco Grand Prix is sanctioned by USA Cycling, the national governing body for the sport of competitive cycling. It will feature events in Unionville, Kennett Square, Parkesburg, Malvern and Phoenxiville.

The field of professional riders is expected to include Bobby Lea, a member of the United States’ 2012 Olympic Cycling Team. Lea, 28, of Berks County, has won track and road races throughout the nation and is a multi-national champion who will represent the U.S. in London later this summer.
