Farmers Market continues growth spurt

This week, visitors can buy produce or get help raising their own

The reasons to visit the Coatesville Farmers Market in Gateway Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays keep growing.

The ingredients for a savory potato salad are just one of the offerings this week at the Coatesville Farmers Market.

For those who have seen the colorful displays of healthy, fresh produce and wondered whether they could cultivate their own, the Master Gardeners of Chester County will be on hand to offer tips and guidance.

Vendors will include Rex Farms Orchard, which will sell blueberries, raspberries, cameo apples, cucumber, kohlrabi, kale, fruit butters and more;  Jacob Beiler, whose offerings will include green beans, cabbage, lettuce, potatoes, and Amish goods; and the Wonderful Good Market at Stoudt’s Brewery, which will add two items to its popular lineup: Organic Sourdough bread, created from a French wild yeast culture called Levain, and Thai Cheese, flavored with herbs such as lemongrass and basil.

MacDougall’s Irish Victory Cakes will return for those with a sweet tooth as well as Nomadic Pies, which will present an array of quiches and fruit and savory pies. New this week, the market welcomes Irie Jamaican Food and Coffee with jerk chicken, ox tail and iced coffee.

Fund-raisers to benefit the market include the sale of iced tea – water is free to keep patrons hydrated – and Coatesville Community Coffee from Hobo Ed’s Railyard Roastery. This week, in keeping with the theme of  making nutritious food more widely available, an area high school senior will be selling friendship bracelets to benefit the Chester County Food Bank.

Yvonne Post, the market’s organizer, said it’s been gratifying to see the outpouring of interest from local residents as well as the local business community. “I’m very pleased with the way people have responded,” she said.

The market’s featured community partners this week are the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County and UDS Service Dogs.
