Predawn blaze that destroyed a garage has been ruled an arson

Now that the Chester County Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the Friday garage fire that prompted the evacuation of 29 nearby residents was intentionally set, Acting Fire Chief Jim Lentz  has issued a reminder for residents to be vigilant.

The predawn fire in the rear of 573 East Chestnut Street was serious enough that 29 residents of the adjacent group home had to be relocated, Lentz said. Investigators concluded that trash and other debris were piled against the outside of the garage wall. Once ignited, it rapidly consumed the garage, Lentz said.

In a press release, Lentz asked residents to look out for themselves and their neighbors. He suggested reporting excessive garbage and debris to the city, not leaving indoor furniture out for trash pickup ahead of schedule, and not storing indoor furniture outdoors.

Lentz also urged residents to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their homes. Outdoor security floodlights with motion detectors are recommended and remain available free to residents during business hours at the Coatesville Police Station.

Anyone with information about the investigation should contact the Coatesville Police Department at 610-384-2300 or the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshall, Lentz said.
