Legendary lemonade-seller’s legacy continues

Bike tour a benefit for Alexandra Scott’s foundation, which funds pediatric cancer research

Chester County cycling fans suffering from withdrawal after the first Chesco Grand Prix ended can get back into biking this Sunday while supporting a good cause.

The late Alexandra “Alex” Scott gained national acclaim for her efforts to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

At least two Coatesville residents will be among those participating in the Lemon Ride Philadelphia, a one-day bicycle tour benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, organizers said.

The event continues the legacy of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, the Lower Merion girl who excelled at turning lemons into lemonade. Alex started selling lemonade at age 4 to benefit pediatric cancer research, an effort that her parents have continued since she succumbed to the disease in 2004.

The Lemon Ride, which will begin at 9 a.m. at Central Bucks West High School (375 W. Court St., Doylestown, 18901) offers three course lengths for various abilities – 12, 26, or 50 miles – and children’s activities at the start/finish.

Sponsored by Volvo, the races will also feature demos of 30 specialized bikes equipped with the latest, not yet released to the public, 2012 SRAM RED Group. Registration is $65/person, 12 years and older, $35/person for under 12 years. While supplies last, registrants will receive a limited-edition t-shirt and lunch. Fund-raising and forming a team is encouraged, and prizes will be awarded to top fund-raisers. The fund-raising contest will end at 5 p.m. on Aug. 6.

Online registration will close at noon on Friday. Race-day registration ($80/person, 12
years and older and $50/person for kids 12 and under0 will be available from 7:30 to 9 a.m.; however, lunch and t-shirts will not be available. For more information, visit http://www.alexslemonade.org.
