CCDC’s Rocker honored as School Nurse of the Year

Sandy Rocker, RN, MSN, certified school nurse at the Child and Career Development Center, was chosen as the recipient of the School Nurse Excellence Award for the South East Region of Pennsylvania.

DOWNINGTOWN — The Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) announced that Sandy Rocker, certified school nurse at the Child and Career Development Center (CCDC) in Coatesville, was chosen as the recipient of the School Nurse Excellence Award for the South East Region of Pennsylvania. The purpose of the award is to publicly recognize school nurses nationwide by annually honoring one School Nurse of the Year from each affiliate who has demonstrated excellence in school nursing practice and school health leadership.

“To do what you love and to love who you work with makes coming to work a pleasure.  Every day I learn something new from a student, parent, staff member or colleague that inspires me and helps me grow both personally and professionally,” Rocker beamed. “There is no other job I would rather do and no other place I would rather work than CCDC.”

Rocker’s peers nominated her for the outstanding service she gives to the students and staff of CCDC, and was presented the award on Saturday, April 1 at the Penn Stater Conference Center in State College, PA. The award entitles Rocker to be eligible for the prestigious National Association of School Nurses, 2018 Pennsylvania School Nurse of the Year Award.

“Sandy is a leader among IU nurses. She keeps everyone informed on updates involving school nursing and is an excellent role model for the two nurses working under her,” Sue Mateka, CCDC principal said. “Sandy provides excellent care to approximately 400 students, many of whom have significant health challenges. She gets to know the students and their families and has earned a level of trust needed when caring for students with significant needs.”

The Child and Career Development Center is a public school for students with severe disabilities aged five to 21 years old. It is owned by the 12 Chester County school districts and operated by the Chester County Intermediate Unit.
