Caln commissioner to seek nomination for new state rep. seat
CALN – Touting his strong record of leadership, coalition building and getting results to benefit our community and our economy, Joshua Young announced today his candidacy for the State Legislature.
A pragmatic progressive Democrat focused on results, Young is seeking to represent the 45th District. He will build upon the progressive tradition he has set as a twice elected Caln commissioner and Chairman of the Council of Trustees of Slippery Rock University.
“These are tough times for working families and seniors,” stated Young, “The current actions by Governor Tom Corbett and his Republican legislative allies proves that right now, more than ever, we need a representative who understands that it isn’t enough to just carry our voice to the Capitol, we need a leader committed to action to push us forward and get results.”
Young has devoted his entire career to fighting for working families and getting results. He was elected Caln Township Commissioner in 2005, was re-elected in 2009. He was appointed by Governor Rendell to the Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees in 2007 at the age of 25, and he was elected the council’s Chairman in 2010. In this campaign, he has already earned the support of numerous community leaders and elected officials.
“Many of my constituents have encouraged me to run for state representative because I have fought for working families while never raising property taxes. After many weeks of prayer and thoughtful discussion with my family and friends, I have decided to seek the Democratic nomination for the Pennsylvania State Legislature.” Young stated that he is planning a formal campaign kickoff from his hometown of Caln Township in the coming weeks. “I feel so strongly about what is happening to our Commonwealth, that I could not wait even one more day to begin this campaign.”
Young understands how to attract business and create jobs. “As the Vice-President of Young’s Garage, I know the challenges facing small business in Chester County. I have just as often fixed brake pads as I have worried about payroll, paying business taxes, and negotiated with health care companies. My first priority if elected State Representative is helping small businesses create jobs.”
Young continued, “I’m beginning my seventh year as the youngest ever Caln Township Commissioner and my record is clear: I never once raised property taxes. We have preserved over 177 acres of open space and worked to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as created jobs here in Pennsylvania.”
Young said of the current situation in Harrisburg, “Elected officials are out of touch, not paying enough attention to the people they are elected to serve. As a taxpayer, a homeowner, a small-business owner, and a public servant, I believe I can offer the leadership, integrity, and passion a candidate needs to win. This is the kind of work ethic I have brought to Caln Township, and will bring to Harrisburg.”
Young said of his announcement, “I seek the honor and privilege of being elected to serve you in the Pennsylvania Legislature. I do so because I am prepared and determined to offer our perspective, ideas, innovation, and leadership in Harrisburg on the issues that make a difference for us, our families, our great community, and our Commonwealth.”

The 45th Legislative District includes the City of Coatesville, the Townships of Caln, East Caln, East Fallowfield, Sadsbury and Valley and the Boroughs of Downingtown, Modena, Parkesburg and South Coatesville. The district has a total population of 62,890. The date for the primary election is April 24, 2012.
