City hosted festive prelude to Frankenstorm

Halloween Parade showcased ravages of nature while escaping real one

Parade participants assembled at East Lincoln Highway and Third Avenue.

Coatesville’s Halloween Parade may have benefited from telepathic powers: Monsters stalked city streets before the threat of a monstrous storm materialized.

On Saturday, the Third Annual Coatesville Halloween entertained spectators with a procession of ghouls, ghosts, and ghastly creatures along Lincoln Highway, accompanied by an escort of  city police officers and firefighters. Sponsored by the Coatesville Parks and Recreation Commission and the Coatesville Community Policing Committee, the parade has gotten bigger each year, said Marie Hess, who heads the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission.

Hess said representatives of Maranatha Christian Academy greeted participants with refreshments before the parade began. She said prizes were awarded  in three age categories – 0 to 5, 6 to 11, and 12 to 17 – as well as a group award, which went to a family of Ghostbusters this year. Hess said each year the parade gains in popularity.

The weather gods were more kindly this time around, Hess said. “Last year we were forced to move the parade because of an out-of-the-ordinary October snowstorm,” she said. “This year we made it one day before the hurricane.”
