Chester County History Center (CCHC) will celebrate Juneteenth with a multi-program event from June 16 – 18, 2022. The events will welcome visual artist Dane Tilghman, children’s book author Nahjee Grant, community staple Rev. Anderson Porter, and hold Walking Tours of downtown West Chester highlighting the abolitionist activities of its citizens their impact on the Underground Railroad in Chester County. Expanding the footprint and reach of activities this year, CCHC will welcome community members and visitors to experience conversations, programs, and events highlighting historic and powerful stories of the African American community in Chester County and how they experienced the past, embrace the present, and inspire the future.
Conor Hepp, President of Chester County History Center expresses his enthusiasm for the event: “Chester County saw the heroism of African American soldiers during the Revolutionary War. It was a key location for the Underground Railroad. It has given birth to amazing African American artists and Civil Rights leaders. Where but here should we celebrate African American history, culture, and future? Juneteenth celebrates more than just the yesterdays. It celebrates the todays and the tomorrows of African Americans. We plan on making that celebration loud.”
On June 16 at 6:30PM, Dane Tilghman, a West Chester native, and one of America’s most sought-after African American visual artists, will talk to about his work, life, and experiences. June 18 at 1:00pm, Nahjee Grant will hold a special program for children and families and, also on June 18, at 6:30pm we will have Rev. Anderson Porter hold a moderated conversation about his journey, his historical experiences, and a reflection on his life. All
programs are free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged through CCHC’s website- www.mycchc.org. Walking Tours are scheduled through the month of June and also require registration.
