Training offered to assist low-income earners with IRS returns
Each year since 2004, low- and moderate-income households have received help from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a partnership-driven initiative of Life Transforming Ministries, which is currently seeking volunteers.
To ensure that free services will be available to Coatesville-area residents in January, the group needs to recruit volunteers now with all experience levels, some of whom who will be trained and certified by the IRS in basic income tax return preparation. A web-based training module and classroom trainings are offered to assist with certification. Volunteer tax assistors prepare all tax returns and also provide educational information about deductions, such as the earned income tax credit, said a press release from the agency.
Volunteers are also needed to organize tax sites, as well as market and promote the tax program and sites. Volunteering for the VITA program is a meaningful way to serve others in a short term, community-based outreach involving a large number of partnering organizations, businesses and churches, the release said.
