Naval Sea Cadet Corps held fundraising banquet

Graduating Sea Cadets were honored at the annual banquet in Kennett Square, Saturday night.

On Saturday February 25th Kennett Square, Pa; it was an evening of inspiration and patriotism, at the annual fundraiser banquet benefiting the William E. Taylor division of the c(USNSCC).  Based in Delaware, their mission is to expose youth, 11-17 years old in the Delaware, Eastern Maryland, Southern New Jersey and South Eastern Pennsylvania region to the full rigors of a military training program.  The banquet was held at the American Legion post 491 in Kennett Square which recently became the home base for the unit.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our relationship with the Sea Cadets” stated John DiMatteo, Veteran and Legion member, “The Sea Cadets bring new life and enthusiasm to our legion where numbers have been decreasing for many years.”

Key Note speaker, Captain Neal Guinan, retired SEAL Team 6 Gold Squadron Commander, spoke of his difficulties with academics at a young age and his unexpected path to the military and SEAL team 6.  The room packed with 300 guests and cadets appreciated Captain Guinans stories and advice offered to the young cadets.  The evening started with the bugle call of Assembly and finished appropriately with the sounding of TAPS.  The Delaware State Police Pipes and Drums played bag pipes and patriotic vocals from Kennett based “Calabrese Sisters” entertained the guests.

William E. Taylor Commander, Sam Elliott, recognized 13 graduating seniors whose dedication to the cause ranged from 3 years to 6 years.  “To get to this point, each cadet has committed to rigorous exercises and training which will prepare them for any military career they might choose after high school” stated Elliott.  Three cadets offered 5 minute speeches, a result of a recent Sea Cadet speech competition led by a local Delaware Toast Master chapter. In a day, when patriotism at times is lacking, this event represents the hope and American resolve that exists in our young people.
