ReFirement at Any Age: Ubuntu

By Gail Supplee Tatum, Columnist, The Times

Ubuntu is translated as, “I Am Because You Are, You Are Because I Am”

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and reading about how we humans are all connected. We are different, but by the same token, we are the same. It seemed only natural that I share this concept of Ubuntu with you so that you may experience what this could mean in your life.

The phrase “I am because you are, you are because I am” encapsulates the profound concept of interconnectedness that lies at the core of human existence. This African proverb reflects the idea that our identities and lives are intertwined, and our actions have a ripple effect on others.  I invite you to delve into the significance of this saying, exploring its implications in various aspects of life, including personal relationships, societal cohesion, and the global community. Through this exploration, we can discover the profound impact that recognizing and embracing our interconnectedness can have on creating a harmonious and compassionate world. That’s quite a mouthful but oh my, isn’t it a lovely thought….

“I am because you are, you are because I am” highlights the fundamental concept of shared humanity. As social beings, our existence is intrinsically linked to one another. Our relationships and interactions form the tapestry of our lives, shaping our perspectives, emotions, and values. By acknowledging this interconnectedness, we foster empathy and understanding, recognizing that the joys and struggles of others are intimately connected to our own.

This African philosophy emphasizes the significance of nurturing positive relationships with others. By supporting and uplifting one another, we create a harmonious environment where individuals can thrive. This interconnectedness amplifies the importance of compassion, kindness, and respect in our interactions, as we realize that our actions profoundly impact those around us.

Ubuntu extends to the societal level. A cohesive society is built on the premise of collective well-being, where individuals recognize the mutual interdependence that binds them together. Embracing this idea encourages cooperation, collaboration, and a sense of responsibility towards the common good. Societies that prioritize interconnectedness experience greater social harmony and resilience.

In an increasingly interconnected world, this African proverb takes on a global significance. Our actions and choices have far-reaching consequences that transcend borders. Environmental issues, economic interdependence, and global challenges underscore the need for a collective response. Recognizing the shared impact of our decisions encourages global cooperation, solidarity, and compassion towards individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

“I am because you are, you are because I am” encapsulates the profound truth that our lives are intricately interwoven, and our actions ripple through the fabric of existence. Embracing this concept empowers us to cultivate empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards creating a more interconnected and harmonious world.

The older I get, the more important Ubuntu becomes. My prayer, my hope is summed up in a John Lennon quote. “You may say I’m a Dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one.” (Another lovely thought)
