Three West Chester University School of Nursing students received $1,000 Cardiac Rehab Nursing Scholarships from the Brandywine Health Foundation.

The students – Kristen Branin, Christine Cunningham and Philip Kasitz – received the awards at a holiday reception sponsored by  Brandywine Hospital and the Brandywine Valley Cardiology’s Cardiac Rehab Center last week.

Cunningham was also the recipient of the Marie Rooney Nursing Scholarship established in memory of Laura Marie Rooney by her husband, Joseph “Jay” Rooney, and her daughters, Celeste Gitthens and Yvette Contois.

“I am grateful that the foundation invests money in students like myself, so that as nurses we can impact the community and make it a healthier place,” said Kasitz.  “This will definitely enable me to spend more time devoted to furthering my education.’’

Frances Sheehan, who heads the Brandywine Health Foundation, said Kasitz’ comments reinforce “the value and importance of these scholarships for members of our community.”

She said the Cardiac Rehab Nursing Scholarship Fund was started as a way to recognize the nursing staff at the Cardiac Rehab Center at Brandywine Hospital during the holiday season and has provided scholarships to 55 nursing students since its inception.

The Brandywine Health Foundation awards a variety of nursing scholarships, which are presented at both the December Cardiac Rehab Nursing Scholarship event and at an event held each spring.
