Lots of friendly animals will be available for observation and photo opportunities at Springton Manor Farm’s annual Sheep & Wool Day.

It’s time to enjoy the shear magic of the season as the sheep lose their wool on Saturday at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore.

The farm’s annual Sheep & Wool Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a variety of special activities throughout the day, such as the Reptile Explorers Family Nature Program at 12:30 p.m. or the live Celtic music with Spring Tunes at 1:45 p.m.

In addition, the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s  Mobile Agriculture Education Science Lab will offer hands-on learning about food, farming and other agriculture-related products, the Chester County Master Gardeners will hold a plant sale offering a mix of vegetables, herbs and native plants, and the Chester County Food Bank will showcase its partnership with Springton Manor with its onsite Outdoor Classroom.

Sheep shearing, wool spinning and weaving, bee keeping, wool felting, basket and soap making and other artisan crafts will be on display, as will the nine piglets and six lambs born in March. Visit with the young animals in Springton Manor Farm’s Great Barn, get your Farm Passport stamped, and tour the Agricultural Museum to learn about seasonal tools used on Chester County farms from the 1700’s to the 1900s.

Penn State Extension, 4-H Clubs, the Chester County Food Bank, the Agricultural Development Council and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will also provide various displays and demonstrations. See the tractor and farm equipment display, participate in children’s crafts and games, play in the corn crib, have your face decorated, tackle the obstacle course, check out Turkey Hill’s 13-foot cow,  watch for the strolling carrot, and take a wagon ride through Springton’s scenic 300 acres. Over 20 craft and food vendors will also be on site.

The newly reorganized Friends of Springton Manor Farm, a non-profit group dedicated to recreation, education, conservation and preservation of the farm, will have membership information on how you can get involved with activities at the park.

The event will be held rain or shine.  Parking is $5 per car; admission and all activities are free. Springton Manor Farm,, a working demonstration farm operated by Chester County Facilities and Parks, is located five miles west of Downingtown, off Rt. 322 in Glenmoore.  For more information, call the park at 610-942-2450 or visit www.chesco.org/ccparks.
