Firefighters extinguished accidental kitchen fire on Wednesday at Coates Street residence.

Firefighters from Coatesville, Thorndale, and the Coatesville V.A. Medical Center responded to a residence in the 800 block of Coates Street Wednesday afternoon, extinguishing a kitchen fire, said Coatesville Interim Fire Chief James Lentz.

Upon investigation – assisted by representatives of the Chester County Fire Marshal’s Office – the kitchen fire reported at 3:06 p.m. was determined to be accidental in nature, Lentz said. Working smoke detectors in the home alerted the residents to the fire, he said.

The building has been declared unsafe by the city’s Codes Department and is not permitted to be occupied until repairs are made. The American Red Cross was contacted and is currently assisting one adult and four children, Lentz said.

Lentz said no injuries occurred to either civilians or fire service personnel, and members of the Coatesville Police Department assisted firefighters at the scene.
