Work to replace aging sewer main begins Monday

Pa. American Water says 1,800 feet of clay pipe will be upgraded; traffic backups likely

37189063Construction to replace nearly 1,800 feet of aging sewer main in the City of Coatesville, will begin Monday, Pennsylvania American Water Company announced Wednesday.

The work, intended to reduce the likelihood of sewer backups in the community, will involve replacing clay pipe that dates back to the 1920s at a cost of about $400,000 a news release from the company said.

Crews will install new eight- and 10-inch PVC pipe along the following Coatesville streets: Lumber Street between Third and Fourth Avenues, Diamond Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, Seventh Avenue between Diamond Street and East Lincoln Highway, and Harmony Street between Strode Avenue and Church Street, the release said.

Work will occur weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., and traffic disruptions in the work area are expected during construction hours, the release said. The company expects to complete the sewer main upgrades, including final paving restoration, by the end of September, weather permitting.

During construction, the company does not expect disruptions to customers’ wastewater service, the release said.
