Tiffany McDaniels, 14, who had been missing since May 17, turned herself in to Philadelphia child-welfare authorities Tuesday afternoon, Coatesville police said.

Coatesville police said the 14-year-old girl who has been missing since May 17 was located Tuesday afternoon and is safe.

Police Chief Jack Laufer said Tiffany McDaniels, recognizing that she was the subject of an extensive search, turned herself in to child-welfare officials in Philadelphia. He said that the Children and Youth division of the city’s Department of Human Services contacted his department and that officers went to Philadelphia to pick her up.

Laufer said early indications are that the girl, who has an extended family in Philadelphia, had been staying with relatives. “At this point, we don’t believe she was out on the street,” Laufer said, adding that detectives had not yet had a chance to interview her to determine her exact whereabouts during the time she was missing.

Investigators had been searching for the teen since May 18, when her family reported her disappearance. She had last been seen the day before  about 4 p.m. at her home in the unit block of of South Eighth Avenue.
