Rt. 30 Bypass crash causes non-life-threatening injuries, massive traffic backups
A two-vehicle accident, which closed a stretch of the eastbound Rt. 30 Bypass for nearly four hours Monday and caused massive traffic backups, occurred about 12:45 p.m., West Whiteland Township Police said.
Police said an eastbound Chevy Tahoe struck a construction vehicle on the shoulder of the bypass. The construction vehicle was doing sign maintenance for PennDOT, police said.
The Tahoe was operated by a 40-year-old Parkesburg woman, who had her two children, ages 4 and 5, with her in the vehicle, said police, who did not release the woman’s name. The 5-year-old girl sustained what was initially thought to be a life-threatening neck injury from metal debris, but her condition has been improved to stable and she is expected to make a full recovery, police said.
The mother and 4-year-old child are being treated for minor injuries. None of the construction personnel was injured, police said, adding that no indications exist that anyone else was involved in the crash.
Preliminarily, it appears the Tahoe left its lane of travel and struck the construction vehicle, causing considerable damage to the passengers’ side of the Tahoe, police said. The cause remains under investigation, police said. The eastbound Rt. 30 Bypass reopened from Rt. 100 to Rt. 202 a little after 4:30 p.m., officials said.
