Police said Joseph Durham, 36, was shot by his stepson, Deviane Scott, 19, on Monday night at their residence in Thorndale.

A 19-year-old Caln Township homicide defendant surrendered to authorities Thursday evening, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said.

Hogan said Deviane Scott, accompanied by his attorney, Shaka M. Johnson, turned himself in at the Chester County Justice Center, where he will be preliminarily arraigned.  Due to the nature of the charges, no bail will be set, and he will be remanded to Chester County Prison, Hogan said.

Johnson could not immediately be reached for comment.

“The Caln Township Police Department and Chester County Detectives worked day and night to put this case together and bring this defendant to justice.  It was a total team effort,” said Hogan.  ”We are relieved that the defendant chose to surrender peacefully, minimizing the danger to him and the public.”

Hogan called the case  ”a family tragedy.”  An argument over  walking a dog allegedly led to the death of Joseph Durham, 36, and Scott, his stepson, has been charged with fatally shooting him on Monday night, Hogan said.  ”There is no excuse or explanation for this type of violence,” he added.
